Great Year For The PFL

On 11/10/07, the PFL Championship for 2007 will be decided on two fields, in two cities. In “game one” of the championship, San Diego travels to Morehead State. In “game two” of the championship, Dayton travels to Drake.

You see, Dayton, San Diego and Morehead State are all currently tied for the PFL lead with 5-1 records. Dayton has defeated San Diego and lost to Morehead State. Morehead State has lost to Jacksonville. So…. If Morehead State defeats San Diego in Kentucky on Saturday, they win the PFL. If San Diego defeats Morehead State, then San Diego is at least a Co-Champion. If USD wins and Dayton loses, USD is the champion. If Dayton defeats Drake, at Drake, then Dayton is at least a Co-Champion with either MSU or USD. Dayton wins outright if USD wins. Dayton and USD would be Co-Champions, but Dayton defeated USD head to head.

The first tie-breaker is head to head to competition. So, Dayton holds the tie-breaker over San Diego and Morehead State holds the tie-breaker over Dayton.

The fact that three teams are vying for the PFL championship during the last week of league play is a testament as to how strong the PFL is this season. Just how strong is the PFL you ask? Well, let’s consult our buddy, Jeff Sagarin. In his latest rankings we see the following:

#24: OVC – 37.44
#25: PFL – 36.80
#27: NEC – 31.17

So, the PFL is on the verge of overtaking the autobid conference, OVC. In fact, Dayton, ( top ranked team in the PFL at #136 ), is rated higher than every team in the OVC except EKU, which is ranked at #127. ( San Diego is also ranked higher than all OVC teams except EKU ). As a reference, PL, AQ Fordham is ranked #138! Is it any wonder that the OVC is leading the charge for scholarship minimums in order to have playoff access? If you do not see the agenda here, all I can suggest is that you take your head out of the sand….

I also thought it might be interesting to look at some NCAA statistics for 2007 year to date for the top PFL teams. This is not an exhaustive list, just some data I was able to quickly retrieve.

Rushing Defense:

1. Morehead State with an absolutely remarkable 19.4 yards per game!!!!!
2. Dayton – 66.7 yards per game.

Total Offense:

2. San Diego – 486 yards per game
11. Dayton – 440.9 yards per game

Total Defense:

3. Dayton – 261.2 yards per game
6. Morehead State – 273.11 yards per game

Sacks

1. Dayton – 4.4 per game
8. Morehead State – 3 per game

Tackles for a loss:

5. Dayton – 8.9 per game

Passing Efficiency:

2. Josh Johnson, San Diego – 207.3, ( #1 is 207.6 )
7. Kevin Hoyng, Dayton – 159.6, ( just ahead of Joe Flacco )

The bottom line is that 2007 has been a great year for PFL football. For the first time ever, a team in the PFL has a win over a team that is going to the playoffs, ( Dayton’s defeat of Fordham, at Fordham on 9/22/07, Final Score: 31-24 ). Something no other PL team has been able to do this year by the way…. Drake defeated Illinois State, San Diego dismantled Northern Colorado, a team that defeated Montana State by the way….

It is possible that Dayton finishes the season 10-1 overall and 8-1 in FCS. If ever there was a year for a PFL team to obtain an at large bid to the FCS playoffs, 2007 is it…. University of Dayton Flyers for an at large bid in 2007 baby!!!!!

Stay tuned on Saturday for what just might prove to be the most interesting day of competition conference wise in all of FCS land!

NAIA Urbana

Let's see that puts your 9-1 record into perpective. 2 wins against the top 50. That justifies a 17 ranking?

The PFL as a league played 18 games against sub-FCS competition. As a league, we went 16-2 with the losses being a Wingate, (Division II ), win over Davidson, ( 30-33 ), and a Trinity International, (NAIA), win over Valparaiso, (13-17).

I am not a fan of sub-FCS games, but at least this year the PFL dominated in the lower division games.

Citdog, while I am not sure how they would do (I was impressed by the way they played USD and Fordham), I am sure Dayton and Albany are not that far apart (I think, just due to SOS Albany is the better team...but that, hopefully, will be decided in the GIC.

Based on that, I think Albany's play against Colgate, Fordham, Hofstra, and Montana (coupled with the dismantling of the NEC teams) clearly shows they could compete with SoCon teams...unless of course you think the SoCon would wax all the squads above.

Read what I wrote.... I NEVER said the Southern Conference should "fear" the Patriot League or the Pioneer Football League.

I said specifically that Dayton would have an excellent chance of defeating The Citadel, period.

No you said ask the PL champ how soft the PFL is, as if the SoCon has any respect for them to begin with. I know all the PL team are above the Mason Dixon line, which negates all respect from one The Citadel grad.

The PFL as a league played 18 games against sub-FCS competition.

xlolx xlolx xlolx xlolx xlolx xlolx xlolx xlolx

Thanks for admitting that! xlolx You have 8 teams, that's 7 conference games.

If my math is correct, that leaves 4 non-conference games per team to complete a season of 11 games.

8 teams X 4 out-of-conference games = 32 TOTAL OOC games.

So 18 divided by 32, 56.25% of the PFL's non-conference games were against non-DI "competition". xrulesx

BigApp,

Your post is why I do not have Dayton in my Top 30...but Albany is! Playing a solid SOS should be impt! Playing Montana, Hofstra, Colgate, Fordham, SBU...is much better than playing Central State.

DetroitFlyer

18/87 were sub-Division I = 21%

10/87 were FCS = 12%

1/87 was FBS = 1%

So....

21% were sub-FCS games

12% were FCS,

1% was FBS

66% were FCS conference games.

Dayton played:

Robert Morris, Won 23-12 at Robert Morris

Urbana, (NAIA), Won 45-7 in Dayton

Central State, (Division II), Won 40-0 in Dayton

Fordham, Won 31-24 at Fordham

LOL.... Playing Montana, Colgate, and Hofstra, and losing all three is not top 25 material in my book.... I guess we have a new way to get into the top 25.... Lose you way in....xlolx

And for the record, I have both Albany and Dayton in my top 25 this week! ( First week for Albany ). That theory of losing your way in came to me yesterday while I was making up my mind.... LOL Again!!!!!

Dane96

Wait...OMG...are you really that ****ing cracked out?

You play two sub FCS teams and win....and should be ranked.

Yet UA loses by 2 at Colgate (PL runner-up possible) to open the season (I think UA wins by 10 if we played today), has the game within 14 pts on the 18 yard line and driving with 7 minutes to go AT Top 5 Montana...and loses by 13 to TOP 20 Hofstra (played even after a bad opening QTR), and BEATS FORDHAM (PL champ on the road)...and you dont think ALBANY is not in position to be ranked higher than DAYTON?

BTW, Albany demolished RMU 45-17...you guys won by 12. We rested David McCarty for the entire third qtr (he rushed for 140+ yards at that point).

Missed a chippy FG as well. Easily could have been 48 or 55 to 17.

Go get some coffee and a logic lesson.

I have Albany @ 27....because I can't overcome the Colgate loss and the opening Qtr. versus Hofstra. Dayton sits at 31. San Diego...dropping.

YOU GUYS HAVE PLAYED SAN DIEGO (who does not look good right now-- Check the Davidson score...and the tape of the Dayton game) and Fordham-- THAT'S IT!

Think about it:

Albany, if they had beat Colgate, would be in the Top 25 if Fordham is there! They would have beaten the Top PL teams...both ON THE ROAD!

Why is Dayton in the Top 25...by virtue of what-- Beating San Diego? Come on!

danefan
November 5th, 2007, 11:40 AM
Its not a theory of losing your way in. Its a theory of being competitive in the games you lose to good teams. Every loss is a bad loss in my book, but I'd take a team that lost to Montana and Hofstra over a team that beat Urbana and Central State any day of the week. But then again, maybe I'm a huge homer. Who knows. I really hope we get to see a Albany/Dayton GIC.

To be fair, a lot of FCS team in the top 25 play one sub D.I game. So I can somewhat understand the San Diego, Morehead State, Jacksonville who only play one. Valpo, Davidson and Bulter should be ashamed of themselves scheduling 3 and 4 games each to D2 and D3 schools. Those teams are what's holding back the top teams in the PFL. Those teams are D.I in name alone. So its not only the PFL OOC, people look at those three or four bottom team of the PFL and consider them to be sub division opponents as well. It hurts a capable Dayton team, because you can kind of forgive the two sub D.I games, but Valpo, Davidson and Bulter are still on there. Thats 5 games that are gimmes.

DF, there would be a heck of a lot less griping if the pioneer league didnt go out of the way to isolate themselves like they do ie; playing multiple sub-d1 games and ducking playing fcs teams. for arguements sake, if next year every team in the pioneer league played a minimum of two OOC games against scholly fcs teams, and played a maximum of one sub d1 game, regardless of the outcomes of those games, you would have a lot more respect than you currently do. the pioneer teams live in a bubble of their own design, and thats whats holding them back.

I'm a big PFL fan, but there is no way Dayton gets in this year with a loss to Moorehead State. Heck, even if you went undefeated you wouldn't get in (two sub D-I games). San Diego was undefeated last year with a much bigger win over Ivy league champ Yale (the PL has been down in recent years so beating their champ doesn't say much right now), top 16 GPI rating (number 13), top 16 in every poll, and yet they still were left out.

Let's be realistic here and see that there is a snow ball's chance in hell in making the play-offs. Dayton may be a top FCS team this year, but you can only speculate that assumption. The win over San Diego was huge, but if you consider the circumstances it was foreseeable (after all San Diego had to practice inside the basketball gym due to the wildfires, and even then it was limited practice due to poor air quality). I think that game may have been different had there not been a state of emergency going on in San Diego, but that is just my opinion.

I am going to go ahead and jump on the band wagon with everyone else on this board and say you may very well be a top FCS team, but there is no way to tell for sure because of your schedule.

Dayton is 8-1, The Citadel is 5-4 and you are bragging about one spot in the rankings? Towson is a pitiful 3-6 on a fast road to 3-8 and we'll still be ranked higher than 8 of your wins at the end of the year. You're only as good as the teams you beat. 8 out of 10 of yours (assuming you win out) are down right *****ty. Now that doesn't mean you shouldn't enjoy this great year you're having. Not true, if UNI played a schedule of all DIII, they could still beat most of the FCS. But....no one would or should get the chance to find out in that case. Your resume is only as good as the teams you beat.

Very good point. I think Dayton does deserve consideration for an at-large at this point in time. However, the problem as you point out is some nice wins get marred by being associated with questionable overall opposition. If the league wants to be taken seriously by the Committee, it needs to schedule accordingly, as a league. One two 'good wins' against an OOC opponent will not be enough for the 'overall body of work' analysis that the Committee will do.

Here is the deal.... Dayton may not even be the best team in the PFL! The championship will not be decided until Saturday, and San Diego, Morehead State and Dayton are all in contention! Those of you that simply dismiss the PFL, and all of its teams as unworthy, simply do not know anything about the quality of football played in this league, period! Go back to the beginning of this thread and read where Morehead State and Dayton are ranked in FCS for rushing defense. MSU is #1, allowing less than 20 yards per game.... Are you kidding me, that number is simply sick! Less than 20 yards per game.... Go see who gave up more yards to Scotty P, MSU or #1 Northern Iowa!!!!! JJ is the best QB in FCS, IMHO! ( Many agree ). Dayton is solid on both sides of the ball. Any one of the three is worthy of a playoff bid. My argument is not that a specific PFL team is worthy, my argument is now and has been for years, that whatever team wins the PFL in any given season is worthy of a playoff bid. If the PL champion deserves an AQ, then so does the PFL champion. Since one does not exist for the PFL, I do believe that an at large is warranted! For crying out loud, there are folks here that still toss Holy Cross out as an at large candidate, and virtually no one howls. Even hint that a PFL team is worthy, and you can count on the AGS community, most of whom have never seen a PFL team play, let alone know anything about the league, ( see the USD scholarship thread for crying out loud ), unleash venom that is second to none!xnonox

Those stats mean little to me because you did it mostly against other PFL teams, and many many of your nonconference games were against sub DI teams. If you played a schedule like Albany's and still had the record you have now, we might be able to talk about an at large but not the way it is now. I HAVE seen a PFL team play. They were a very motivated PFL team, playing at home for the state championship and what looked like at the time to be a possible playoff birth with a win. And UNI throttled them 45-7.

Let me ask you this Flyer, how many Gateway, SoCon and CAA teams have you seen this year?

Well, UNI is in many folks opinions the number one team in all of FCS.... Is it a surprise that they defeated the fifth best team in the PFL this season? Would you expect UNI to defeat the 5th best team in the Gateway Conference? By the way, how many yards did Scotty P put up on you? How many did he put up on Morehead State? Care to bet me that Scotty P ran for more yards against you than he did at MSU? Oh wait, MSU's rushing defense could not possibly be as good as yours.... Give me a break.... Less than 20 yards per game is amazing, I do not care what level of football you play! I do seem to recall that the fifth best team in the PFL this year did defeat ISU who went on to defeat YSU a while ago.... So that would tell me that the fifth place team in the PFL could probably hang with the fifth best team in your vaunted conference.

Drake...at this point, could not compete in the middle-upper half of the Gateway. They were not in the game at all vs. UNI-- Getting thrashed in the first Qtr.

UNI beat Drake 45-7 Drake is tied for 4th in the PFL - but loses the tie breaker so say they are in 5th.
UNI beat Illinois St 23-13 (it was 13-13 after 3 quarters). ISU is 5th in the Gateway.

ASU beat Michigan too, and Wofford beat ASU, but you don't see Wofford clamoring for a shot at Ohio State in the BCS Championship, do you? xrolleyesx xrolleyesx xrolleyesx xrolleyesx

Really Detroit, you shoulda looked up the stats before you made that claim.

I maintain that holding your opponents to less than 20 yards per game rushing is simply fantastic! No one else in FCS is even close, not even any other teams that play in the PFL, MAAC or any other conference. Morehead State has a darn good rush defense, period.

We'll see if J. T. Rogan at USD can challenge them this weekend. After that, MSU plays FBS Western Kentucky so we will see how they hold up. For now, less than 20 yards per game given up against the rush is unreal!!!!!

I mean come on, using the stats cited, at the worst case you can say that MSU did as well as or maybe even slightly better than the number one team in FCS against a very good running back!

No, using those stats you could say MSU did almost as well as UNI. xnonono2x

MSU 3.29 ypc
UNI 2.23 ypc

Scotty P vs: Morehead State 7 carries, 23 yards
Scotty P vs: UNI 13 carries, 29 yards

Slightly better is total yards yielded to Scotty P.

MSU 3.29 ypc
UNI 2.23 ypc

Slightly worse in yards per carry yielded to Scotty P.

Pretty darn impressive for Morehead State University when compared to the number one team in FCS if I do say so myself!!!!!xthumbsupx

I also seem to recall that UNI gave up more points to Drake than MSU did!!!!

And I'll go back to my original statement one more time because it is just so darn amazing....

Morehead State has allowed less than 20 rushing yards per game to their opponents year to date! SIMPLY AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!xbowx xbowx xbowx

I at least admire your passion.

I don't.

Morehead does have a good rush defense, Ill give you that. But having a good rush defense alone isnt a good enough reason for them to be able to claim a playoff spot. Even if those stats wernt put up against the competition it was.

Also, UNI did just as good or BETTER against Scotty P, theres no way you could say they did worse.

And, Western Kentucky is hardly a true FBS team. But thats for another arguement.

I'm getting tired of ragging on my Bulldogs. I'm from Des Moines. Theyre having a down year this year, especially the last few weeks.

As a Dayton fan, I have to hope that they have one more bad week.... I'm not sure what happened to Drake, but I suspect that never settling on a QB, ( I would have gone with Ingle ), might have been a big part of it.... Saturday's Dayton / Drake game will be a good one.... This has grown into a pretty good rivalry and records do not matter going into this one.... Throw in the fact that Dayton will be playing for at least a Co-Championship in the PFL and it has all the makings of a great game!

The more important question: how would they do against SIU? xeyebrowx

Slightly?

Not at all. A difference of 1.06 ypc is significant.

Is the MSU / EKU game confirmed? I have heard rumors, but if this is confirmed that is great news for MSU and the PFL! I would love to see that game this year as I think it would very competitive. Next year, well I guess we will find out!

WKU will beat Morehead by at least 35 points at the minuium,
