Charleston Southern's offense wasn't as efficient as usual Saturday against Savannah State, but kicker Nick Ellis and the Buccaneers' defense made sure it didn't matter.

Ellis kicked four field goals, the Bucs held the Tigers to 66 yards in total offense on 58 plays, and CSU won 28-0 Saturday at CSU Stadium.

"This team has been about growth and maturity in all three phases of the game," said CSU coach Jay Mills. "We've been persevering. We've had some things that caused us to suffer. Injuries and illness and so forth. But the suffering produces perseverance, perseverance produces character, and character has produced hope."

On Saturday, the Bucs (3-3) had to hope that backup quarterback Sidney Bryant could deliver after starter Eli Byrd left the game after suffering a bruised right shoulder on a 13-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.

It was a good game. I hope Eli is well enough to start for our next game. The open week is going to do us some good.
