It was a stunning upset by any measure. But oddly it was not as great a shock to those who have followed Appalachian State. The Mountaineers won the last two championships in Division I-AA, now known as the Football Championship Subdivision. They play one level below premier programs like Michigan, which plays in what is now known as the Football Bowl Subdivision.


The Mountaineers were not the cream puff opponent that Michigan fans might have envisioned, even if they do play in the Southern Conference against opponents like Wofford and Elon. In fact, a university official said the team has had difficulty scheduling nonconference teams in its own state, like North Carolina and Wake Forest, which apparently want no part of Appalachian State. They know better.

The cool thing is that this story was front page of the print edition.

College football never gets such attention from the Times except sometimes on the date after the BCS championship game.

There's also a post from Saturday on the Times' college football blog, The Quad (http://thequad.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/09/01/the-biggest-upset-ever/), asking if this is the biggest upset ever. Some of the comments from readers typically ignore ASU in discussing Michigan's loss. But there is at least one good comment, the 10th one, from a UMass fan (someone here?):

"And as someone here said, their fans have an enthusiasm and focus that we here in Amherst, frankly, envy - folks who ardently support a team largely without the hype and hoopla thrown around by the national media."

I'm guessing that Michigan will be seeing a lot of App. St. apparel for the rest of the season.

Reminds me of when Gerry Faust was coaching at Notre Dame. The Notre Dame coaches were participating in an intramural basketball tournament and were preparing to play a team of students. The football team had finished the previous season at 7 - 5. When the students took off their warm up gear they wearing basketball jerseys from each of the five teams that had beaten Notre Dame the year before.

I think that fact that he's a grad is better than the fact that he points out the correct pronunciation. He's also the co-author of Freakonomics.
