From the Charleston paper's Ken Burger this morning:

In the picture, they are wearing what looks like nose/mouth protectors. Were those thrown together by perhaps a local craftsman, or were they common to football in that configuration during that period?

We hit our 100 years in baseball a few years back, and our football is getting pretty close (we started in I think 1905 but missed some years due to the World Wars).

Truly a great milestone! Congrats!

I grew up only about 20 minutes from Elon. I've had a bunch of friends and acquaintances play ball there, always a great program and tradition. I still call them the Fighting Christians, though.

I was in the last graduating class of the Fightin' Christians and still sometimes refuse to buy clothing that says Elon Phoenix!

But again, congrats on the 100 year mark! In days where you hear about schools dumping football, it's good to see some programs in FCS going strong!!!

By they way, where did you grow up? I grew up about an hour from Elon.

Yanceyville. Born and raised there, the family farm is still there (as well as the family!)

I had planned to make a trip out of the El Cid/Elon game every other year that we play up there, but last year I was on my honeymoon, and two years before that, I was trying to hop a space-A flight out of Baghdad and got delayed too long to make the game. Hopefully next year I'll be cooking some brats and onions up there. (They still alow tailgating at the stadium, don't they?)

I found it interesting that the Board of Visitors barely approved football and would only allow it in 1905 if they call it "gymnastics"

Congrats to The Citadel. We're gonna have to wait about 70 more years I'm afraid.

Yes we have tailgating. It's not as big as it was 3 years ago (our record tells why), but yes you can grill out!

Congrats on the 100th anniversary.

Wofford started football in 1889 with a win over Furman in South Carolina's first college football game so this is 118 for us.

And VMI's first "intercollegiate" football team in 1891

The last quarter century has been a little rocky for the Keydets.
