Krapfl will start opener at quarterback

Missouri State coach Terry Allen has made official what’s been apparent the last week or so: sophomore Matt Krapfl will start at quarterback in next Thursday’s season opener.
“Matt has the experience edge, but both he and Cody (Kirby) will play,” Allen said.
Krapfl won the job with a solid preseason, just 10 months after undergoing major knee surgery. He completed 23 of 34 passes for 231 yards and four touchdowns in two scrimmages.
Kirby, a highly regarded freshman, also was solid. He completed 18 of 32 passes for 205 yards and one TD.
Kirby is one of six true freshmen headed for playing time. The others include running backs Kingjack Washington and Stephen Johnston, receiver Brandon Oliver, defensive end Terian Washington and defensive tackle Travis Simmons.
Allen said five or six other true freshmen remain on the fence in terms of playing or redshirting.
Kirby said the anticipation of his first college action is starting to gain steam.
“We’ve been in camp for a while and now we’ve just started the school year,” he said. “Now you can tell the atmosphere around campus is starting to get more football oriented. We’re ready to go.”
