A few slips in this article as it relates to the nomenclature, but I do like this article for the most part and how it really explains what is great about the non-scholarship ranks of FCS -- just wish, they had a legit form of championship to play for instead of the Gridiron Classic.

VU football retains flavor of amateurism

BY JOHN MUTKA Post-Tribune senior correspondent

Welcome to Division I-AA, one of the last bastions of football purity.

Valparaiso, which was eventually forced into I-AA by the NCAA after basketball joined Division I in the mid-70s, is limited to need-based scholarships.

Roughly 75 per cent of Coach Stacy Adams' roster qualifies, but none of his players receive full scholarships.

Student loans are available at most Pioneer Football League schools, but Davidson recently switched to an endowment plan.
