Ronnie Turner, who blogs for the Houston Chronicle wrote today in his blog about TxSo HC Steve Wilson and what he needs to do in order to maintain his job as head coach of TxSo. This all stems from Wilson showing up to his team's media day (you'll recall TxSo did not show up at SWAC Media Day) and took quite a few questions related to the added pressure this year...

---------------
For the most part, Wilson shook off several of the questions, refusing to acknowledge the existence of any pressure. But we all know that there is plenty of pressure, both on him and embattled Tigers athletic director Alois Blackwell, who was nowhere to be found Saturday.

A colleague and I discussed the situation, and we agreed that Wilson needs to win at least five games this season to save his job. The same standard applies to Blackwell, who is up to his neck in controversy over the athletic department's financial problems and his firing of men's basketball coach Ronnie Courtney. By the way, the men's basketball program still doesn't have a coach, but we'll talk more about that situation later.

Blackwell hired both Courtney and Wilson, and neither have been glowing successes. Courtney finished his six-year tenure at TSU with four straight losing campaigns, and Wilson has yet to crack .500.

Ronnie's assessments are dead on IMHO. The school's overall financial issues put additional pressure on the athletic department living up to their expenditures.

I just hope that with the SWAC going to seven conference games instead of nine that Texas Southern doesn't have the football team do four FBS games in order to help things. They have Houston and UTEP this year. What's to say they don't do four FBS games next year? Hopefully they have one SLC team in there somewhere...

Take one look at their mens hoops schedule every year to get an inkling of what football would be like unconstrained by SWAC matchups.

I know it...they once played UConn in Storrs, Conn and then traveled all day the next day to play UTEP in El Paso, TX for one helluva back to back.

They don't have a basketball staff right now, not sure how that is impacting future scheduling right now...
