2005: Earned a spot on the travel squad for the fifth game of the season at Furman, where he collected his first-career tackle ... went on to play in seven games, recording five tackles (two solo, three assists) ... had two stops in regular-season finale at Elon and one in only playoff contest, the first-round win over Lafayette.

2004: Redshirted.

Junior College -- Intercepted three passes and was third in the Mission Conference with 13 pass breakups as a sophomore under head coach Alex Gerke at Golden West College ... recorded 58 total tackles, including 36 solo stops, en route to second-team All-Mission Conference honors in 2005 as a cornerback … Rustlers finished 1-9 in 2005, including an 0-5 mark in the National Division of the Mission Conference.

High School -- Earned first-team All-CIF-Southern Section Division VII honors in 2002 as a defensive back under Jerry Urias at Arroyo High School in El Monte … as a senior notched 37 tackles (18 solo) with one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and six interceptions … also caught 27 passes for 374 yards and two touchdowns, averaged 21 yards per punt return (three touchdowns) and 26 yards per kickoff return ... Mares was an All-Mission Valley League defensive back and wide receiver as both a junior and senior, All-Mid Valley News return specialist as a senior and was named National High School Hall of Fame Scholar/Athlete in 2002 … two-year team captain … also lettered four years in track and field … made the Top 100 with his GPA.

This season reality television star Max Lerner from MTV - Two-A-Days gets to hit the field for his first college action. I'm sure Max gets ribbed a lot for the show, but Lerner is the real deal at safety. Lerner is a smart player and his physical playing style should make him a fan favorite.

2006 graduate of Hoover (6A) High School...football coach was Rush Propst...high school senior season was featured in MTV hit series "Two-A-Days"...played safety and cornerback and also punted during his prep tenure...racked up 183 tackles, nine interceptions, three touchdowns during his career, helping Hoover to a 43-2 record and three state championships in his three varsity campaigns...two-year captain and two-time all-state, all-metro, and all-over-the-mountain selection...totaled 85 tackles, three interceptions, and a touchdown as part of a 14-1 state championship campaign in 2005...squad was ranked seventh nationally by USA Today and played in first national high school game televised by ESPN...selected to play in the prestigious 2005 Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game...registered 53 tackles, five interceptions, and two touchdowns in 2004, helping Hoover to a 15-0 season, state championship, and a USA Today No. 4 final national ranking...named MVP of the North-South All-Star Game...registered 35 tackles and an interception on a 2003 Hoover state title team that went 14-1 and was ranked 12th nationally in USA Today final poll...also starred in baseball as a centerfielder.
