10 burning questions
The Forum's Jeff Kolpack tackles the big topics about the Bison as players report for practice today.

1) Who will end up being the starting tailback? We know Tyler Roehl (pictured at right) is the No. 1 guy coming out of spring ball, but Roehl has been a fullback his first two years and a valuable one at that. He had 22 catches for 259 yards last year, several of which went for crucial first downs. At 5-foot-10 and 232 pounds, he has a fullback’s body.

2) Can the Bison beat the Gophers? If ever there was a chance, sans 2007, this year is it. The Bison have a veteran quarterback in Steve Walker, great linebackers and a dynamic return specialist in Shamen Washington. Minnesota, meanwhile, has a new coach, several new players and will break in a new quarterback in a new offensive system.

3) Will Drago finally go national? We’ve seen the booming punts from Mike Dragosavich that seemingly tease the ceiling in the Fargodome. But the senior hasn’t gotten much national attention until being named to a couple of preseason teams last month.

4) Is Craig Bohl the next Ron Erhardt? Yes. There are several parallels to the legendary Bison head coach of the late ’60s and early ’70s. Erhardt took the baton from Darrell Mudra and escalated the Bison to the top of their division for the first time. Bohl is doing the same in Division I’s Football Championship Subdivision.

5) How long will Bohl be at NDSU? This question has been nervously asked by many Bison fans. They want to keep their coach. Bohl won’t take just any top-level Division I job for the money; it has to be a situation where he can win. So the answer to that question is at least two more years.

6) What is the strength of this team? In Joe Mays, Ramon Humber and Mike Maresh, you are looking at the best set of linebackers the Bison have ever had.

7) What is the team’s weakness? There aren’t many, but this is a tie between tailback and defensive tackle, and the reason is simple: Both spots are unproven. Roehl is new at tailback, and replacing defensive tackle Justin Frick will be critical. Mike Brown is the starter, and Matt Gratzek, who has gotten some notoriety in practice, is just a freshman.

8) What was the most significant offseason move? The better answer to this is, who didn’t move? The Bison have their offensive and defensive coordinators in Pat Perles and Willie Mack Garza back and that is a huge plus on a staff that has seen several coaches move on to bigger schools.

9) Can the Bison finish No. 1 in the polls? No. Because the Bison have one year left on their reclassification, they are not eligible for the playoffs and therefore will be left on the outside looking in after the final votes are tabulated. NDSU could very well be the best team in the FCS this year, but most voters will be watching the national championship game on TV, and that carries more weight.

10) If you were to go to one home game, which would it be? Cal Davis is always a dogfight, and the Texas schools (Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston) will be fun tests. But Illinois State on Nov. 3 will give Bison fans a glimpse of the future because the Bison will be joining ISU’s Gateway Football Conference next year

I read that article also Freak. Football season is getting closer and lots of those questions will be answered before too long. My big question from the end of last year has always been #1. I blogged about it and we have a poll up at www.bisonsports.net about it. So far most seem to think Roehl will be the guy. I'm not so sure about that though, we shall see.

I have a feeling Bomar will be very well acquainted with Joe Mays by the time the second half rolls around :D

Joe Mays is the football equivalent to Chuck Norris. He will single handedly dismantle the SHSU offense and dismantle the Al-Qaeda network from the confines of the Fargodome. He will also in inumerous acts of brilliance, "play left, he will play right, it don't make no difference. He will block, tackle, score the touch down, snap the ball, and kick the extra point. Hell, the boy will fill up the Gatorade cooler, walk the dog, and paint your back porch. I'm telling ya, the boy can plain play some football."

No disrespect to Mays, the fella CAN PLAY SOME FOOTBALL, but geez, man, the dude can't cover every receiver...

I agree about Humber, but Mays is more of a live body. You could listen to the game and tell when Joe Mays made a tackle.

Mays is the man for big hits, which is why fans love him

but Humber makes a lot more plays IMHO :)

I do agree. But Mays is still a lot of fun to watch because he hits like a freight train. The injured players are not so cool, but watching them fly through the air is. xlolx

Man I'm stoked for this game too! I've been reading the NDSU threads on katfans.com and you guys seem to be a classy and passionate bunch of fans.(much like us!) When you're in the tailgating lot mosey on over to the north side and have a couple cool ones. Just look for my friend Wade, he's the drunk guy popping wheelies in his power wheelchair with Bison flags in the back!!xlolx xlolx

You guys do something Montana can't do, beat SLC teams in the south.

Your 2004 Nicholls win was vs. a 5-5 team
Your 2005 NWSt win was vs. a 5-5 team
Your 2006 SFA win was vs. a 4-7 team

So your 3 out of your 5 wins arn't against good teams. We'll see about this year ;) Both SFA and SHSU should be worthy opponents.

SFA was 4-2 in the SLC in 06
NW St was 3-3 in the SLC in 05
Nicholls was 5-1 in the SLC in 05
NW St was 4-1 in the SLC in 04
Nicholls was 2-3 in the SLC in 04 (we were the only visiting team to win in Thibodeaux in 04, the colonels beat two playoff teams (EWU and NWSt) that year.

SFA sucked last year. They lost to freaking Delta State. Only reason they went 4-2 is because the rest of the SLC sucked too, cept for the 2 teams that beat them, McNeese and SHSU. So back to square one, 3 out of the 5 were crappy teams...take overall or SLC record ;)

Mediocre maybe but not crappy-Sam has lost to DII schools twice in the last five years.

regardless NDSU has beaten 2 of the last three SLC champsm and hope to make it 3/4 this year

Not like Delta State couldn't jump up in the Southland and be immediately competitive.

They're one of the best DII teams in the SE.

Last season The ‘Jacks led the Southland Conference in scoring defense, rush defense and total defense. They have a lot of guys back. That was enough to give them a 4-2 conference record. They lost all five Out of conference games! I think they finished second.
