It was the first workout of August camp but the McNeese State quarterbacks looked like veterans Friday morning.

Of course, that's what they are as all four are back for their third season with the Cowboys.

Starter Derrick Fourroux has one letter and a redshirt season behind him and backup Mark Fontenot has two letters while both Bart Crader and Beau Lasseigne have a letter along with a redshirt season.

"They looked good as a group," head coach Mat Viator said of his quarterbacks on opening day. "It's the third year to have them and we can do a lot of things now without having to worry about them not knowing what to do. It puts us that much farther along."

Quarterback coach Tim Leger, a former McNeese signal caller himself who is in his first season with the Cowboys, was also positive about the way the signal callers performed.

"It makes it a lot easier," he said of having four lettermen at quarterback. "Effort and tempo is what we will stress now. The knowledge is there."

As for the team as a whole, Viator said he was pleased with what appeared to be a squad that is in excellent physical condition, noting that the players looked liked they had gotten a lot of things done during the off season.

He said that all of the members of the freshman class appeared to be excellent athletes and capable of absorbing everything that will be thrown at them early.

Friday's workout also enabled the players and staff to take advantage of the new pavilions that have been put up on the practice fields by the Cowboy Club and the Petrochem Athletic Association.

"It's just tremendous," Cowboy athletic trainer Jim Murphy said. "It makes the whole facility look professional and it's something that had been needed."

The Cowboys now take their breaks and the training staff can attend to players under two 30 foot x 60 foot steel beamed, concrete slabbed and metal roofed pavilions.

McNeese will continue with one a day morning practice sessions through Tuesday. The Cowboys first scrimmage is scheduled for Saturday, August 11, in the afternoon.

They also have Media Day and Fan Day set for 5 p.m.on Sunday, August 12.

COWBOY NOTES: McNeese State assistant equipment manager Fred Thomas was all smiles prior to Friday's opening practice session. "For the first time since I've been here we finally have all of the players wearing practice jerseys with the same number as they will wear in the games,"he said.......former Cowboy quarterback and school Hall of Fame member Kerry Joseph continues to standout in the Canadian Football League....in a game Thursday night he led Saskatchewan to a 21-9 victory over defending Grey Cup champion B. C. Lions.....Joseph ran for one touchdown and passed for another as he hit on 20 of 33 passes for 261 yards...former Sam Houston State standout Matt Dominguez caught five of those passes for 89 yards.......the Roughriders are now 4-2 on the season and only one game out of first place.
