There is a thread on best record all-time etc. What is the best decade for your school?

I'd need to do some research, but most likely the 30s, 70s or now.

Delaware, the 1970's:

94-23-2 (.798)

1970: 9-2-0 Boardwalk Bowl Champions
1971: 10-1-0 National Champions & Boardwalk Bowl Champions
1972: 10-0-0 National Champions
1973: 8-4-0 Div-II Quarterfinalists
1974: 12-2-0 Div-II Runner Up
1975: 8-3-0
1976: 8-3-1 Div-II Quarterfinalists
1977: 6-3-1
1978: 10-4-0 Div-II Runner Up
1979: 13-1-0 Div-II National Champions

Interesting note in 1972:
Delaware declined an invitation to the Boardwalk Bowl stating they had nothing left to prove that year. This action is at least partially responsible for the NCAA moving to the playoff system the following year.

You're welcome.

For NDSU I'd say 1981-1990 (which might not be what Gil was looking for) so the last three years look like this:

1988 14-0-0 National Champions
1989 8-3-1 Loss at Jacksonville State in the quarterfinals
1990 14-0-0 National Champions

Regular season: 111-16-2 .860
Playoffs: 21-3 (.875)

Kinda hate looking at this because I really doubt NDSU will ever have another decade like that. Notice that every team NDSU lost to in the playoffs is now in DI.

Furman 1980's

80 9-1-1 SoCon Champs
81 8-3 SoCon Champs
82 9-3 SoCon Champs
83 10-2-1SoCon Champs
84 8-3
85 12-2 SoCon Champs NC Runner up
86 7-3-2
87 7-4
88 13-2 SoCon Champs National Champs

In the 1920's FU had strong records but fell off sharply in the later part of the decade.

More importantly, this decade with the exception of 2003 is shaping up to compete with the 80's

00 9-3
01 12-3 SoCon Champs NC runner up
02 8-4
03 6-5
04 10-3 SoCon Champs

Many of the SoCon Championships were shared.

Although I agree with Rock about the 70's, I guess I'm hoping that the Hens are halfway to making the 00's the best decade ever, even with a couple of down years in there. :D

2001: 4-6
2002: 6-6
2003: 15-1 Co-A10 Champs, National Champions

Just off the top of my head, without actually doing any fact finding...I would think Lafayette's best decade would be either the 80's when they had Frank Bauer on the cover of SI and Bill Russo was winning the Eddie Robinson trophy or the early 90's when we had Erik Marsh and high-octane offense (of which I was a proud member!) lead us to two league championships. Course we won a couple of National Championships back in the 20s but does that really count? My philopophy is if you could fold up your helmet and put it in your back pocket after the game...it doesn't count.

I know the Griz have had a team for many decades, RockyMtnGriz, but I didn't realize we had a medieval team. Maybe we had a team even before 1000 A.D. That would explain why we've done so well recently against the Vandals--we've seen their offense before. ;)

Seriously, though, you're right about the Griz during this period--112-27 for a decade ain't too shabby--especially when it's the immediately preceding decade (which means the Griz aren't done quite yet).

Even before that wasn't bad either

Grambling / Coach Eddie Robinson (I always pay tribute) only had a bad "half" decade. We had winning records in the 50's, 60's,70's, 80's and early nineties. Doug Williams came in and rebounded us from the tailspin of the middle years of the 90's. But just off memory, I'd say our best ten year period was between 66-77. The overall best Decade for us was the 70's in my opinion.

1976-1984 (not quite a decade)
76 - 11-1 Division II Champs
77 - 5-4
78 - 8-2 BCS champs
79 - 6-4
80 - 4-6
81 - 3-7
82 - 6-5
83 - 1-10 (booyea!)
84 - 12-2 IAA National Champs

We also won a lot from the mid50s- to mid60s, but this span had 2 national champsions I thought I'd list.

What happen? did they suspend the entire team in '83 and then reinstate for 84?

Don't have time to research right now, but I'd surmise our best decade was the 1970's with several playoff appearances, and the National Championship in 1977, and I-AA runner-up in 1979.

Great man , really great guy to know. I bet he would love to be coaching in this era. I honestly think he would play more out of conference games against some of the other teams in 1-AA.

What's amazing is that last year's national runner-up Griz team, at 12-3 (80% wins), didn't even have an average winning percentage for Griz teams of this period (80.58% wins).

If you spend any time on the Griz message boards, you'd think last season was far worse than merely marginally below the best winning percentage among playoff I-AA teams for the past decade (which is what the Griz have had). Amazing how spoiled some fans are.

Ughhh! 12-3!!! We weren't even "average"!!!! What an outrage!!!!! Break out the pitchforks and torches and run Hauck outta town!!!!! ;)

Ok I will be the one that will post it. The 80's where our best decade but since we didnt start football since 84 I will post the first 10 yrs

84- 8-3 Just missed the playoffs in first season
85- 13-2 National Champions
86- 13-2 National Champions
87- 9-4 Lost in the Quarters
88- 12-3 National Runner-up
89- 15-0 National Champions
90- 12-3 National Champions
91- 7-4
92- 7-4
93- 10-3 Lost in the Quarters

Thats a combind record of 106-28.

Here is from that time to current which hasnt been to bad either just not as good as the 80's and early 90's. Its actually 11 years but you guys get the point.

94- 6-5
95- 9-4 Lost in first round
96- 4-7
97- 10-3 Lost in the quarters
98- 14-1 Lost in the finals
99- 13-2 National Champions
00- 13-2 National Champions
01- 12-2 Lost in Simis
02- 11-3 Lost in Simis
03- 7-4
05- 9-3 Lost in first round

Thats a combined record of 108-36. So not bad overall. Like I said not as good as the first half but better than a lot of teams best records in a decade.
