FRISCO, Texas-- Preseason favorite McNeese State leads the 2007 All-Southland Conference football teams with nine first-team selections, including the reigning SLC "Player of the Year" in Steven Whitehead and the Defensive "Player of the Year" in Bryan Smith.

The teams are comprised of players voted All-SLC following last season as automatic selections. The remaining spots are nominated for and voted on by the league's head coaches.

Whitehead, a senior from Slidell, is a preseason first-team selection at wide receiver and return specialist. He ranked second in the Southland with 130 all-purpose yards. He totaled 1,560 yards in 12 games to help the Cowboys post a 7-5 overall record and 5-1 conference record on its way to its fourth SLC regular season title in the last six years.


Bryan Smith, 2006 Defensive Player of the Year named to first team defense


Smith led the league with 13.5 quarterback sacks and 21 tackles for loss and ranked 20th with 68 total tackles. The Newton, Texas native set a new SLC single game record with five quarterback sacks.

Other Cowboys joining Whitehead on the first team offense is wide receiver Carlese Franklin, offensive linemen Eman Naghavi and place kicker Blake Bercegeay.

Franklin caught 29 passes last season and ranked sixth in the league with 39.2 yards per catch.

Naghavi, a junior from Katy, TX, was a second-team selection last season after starting all 12 games and helped the Cowboys lead the SLC in scoring.

Bercegeay finished second in the SLC with 87 points and he made 18 of 20 field goals and 33 of 36 extra points conversions.

Joining Smith and Whitehead on the first team defense is defensive lineman Kirby Joseph, linebacker Trey Bennett and defensive back Jonathan Walker.

Joseph ranked seventh in the SLC 3.5 sacks and was second on the team with 17 quarterback hurries.

Bennett ranked third on the team with 87 tackles and recorded double figure tackles last season with 13 against Northwestern State and 10 against Southeastern La. He averaged 4.5 sacks and was credited with four quarterback hurries.

Walker ranked seventh on the team with 55 tackles and ranked fourth in the SLC with three interceptions.

Cowboys named to the second team offense are wide receiver Quinten Lawrence and offensive lineman James Jordan while linebacker Allen Nelson was named to the second team defense.

Lawrence was second on the team with 29 catches for 479 yards and two touchdowns and ranked fifth in the league with 39.9 yards.

Jordan started in 12 at offensive guard last season but was moved to tackle for the upcoming season.

Nelson led the team with 119 total tackles and had 3.5 tackles behind the line and one interception.
