The state's only NCAA Division I athletic department asked for an exception, and the Board of Regents obliged. At the request of South Dakota State president David Chicoine, the board voted recently to give the school's athletic department temporary access to some institutional resources not earmarked for other uses so that it can meet the demands of the state's progressive Title IX plan and the ...

This is good news for SDSU!

I bet USD is going to take advantage of this as well.

The 'Yotes may take advantage of something similar. xthumbsupx And given their early 2000-2003 removal of sports (baseball, wrestling) to deal with Title IX issues, I hope they can find the resources to fund their sports programs.xrulesx xrulesx

Great news for the Bunniesxnodx xnodx and here's to success in all sports!xbeerchugx

Obviously the state of SD is setting a precedent for funding DI athletics at the state flagship schools.

Ok, here is a quick history and overview of athletics funding in South Dakota. In an attempt to block SDSU's move to D-I, USD was instrumental in pushing the Board of Regents to pass tough rules on how athletics could be funded, just prior to our ascension to D-I. USD was hopeful that the rules would force us to remain with them in D-II. Although the rules made it harder for us we moved to D-I anyway.

Around the same time, USD was also involved in a Title IX law suit brought by two of their coaches against USD and the Board of Regents. After this law suit was concluded, costing the state of South Dakota millions, the BOR enacted new very strict interpretation of the Title IX statute.

So SDSU was hit with stringent requirements on how we could use our fund in our D-I move and at the same time saddled with a new requirement to meet an exacting interpretation of Title IX.

So long story short SDSU went to the BOR and asked for an exception on how we use our money. Keep in mind the money we are talking about is not new funds, they were not given to us by the BOR, we are just shifting funds we already have. Funds that for the most part can be attributed to our move to D-I. This exemption is for a short time only, but will be beneficial as we move forward.

USD may be able to benefit from the loosening of the rules that they help design, but only if they have the money in the first place.

I would like to point out how appropriately SDSU met Title IX requirements by creating opportunities for women and not knocking men down a peg.

Sounds like good news. I used to hate Title IX, but with a 11 yo daughter... I've come around. :D

Great point! xthumbsupx SDSU added the sport of equestrian and is in the process of building a $3.6 million dollar training center:

I do congratulate SDSU with every ounce I can muster for resisting the urge to cut men's sports.

You're a model that the rest of the country (UNH, JMU, etc.) should be following.

But I can not and will not congratulate you for "creating new opportunities for women".

You're creating 40 opportunities...for women to ride horses around.

"Oh Daddy! Look how marvelous this is! I get a scholarship just for riding Buttercup around all day!"

What a joke.

I hear that SDSU is planning more new "opportunities" in the future for women! Varsity floor mopping and oven cleaning are being considered!

A new 4.7 million dollar competition kitchen is in the planning stages!

Here's the planned uniforms:
