Great job, Georgia State! 300k already raised towards football. That proposed student fee increase would make a big dent in things. Hopefully they'll continue to build up steam and make more $$$...

Ga. State football effort raises $300K

Georgia State has raised close to $300,000 toward establishing a football program in the first two months of its campaign, athletics director Mary McElroy said, and she and a team of fund raisers continue to tap potential donors for a team that could start play as early as the 2010 season. The Panthers are going after large donations first and have received pledges of $100,000 and $50,000. "This is when you call on friends. You have to rely on not just your own [Georgia State] people," said McElroy, who plans to call on legendary Dallas Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach, whom she knows through their mutual alma mater of Navy and whom Georgia State football consultant Dan Reeves once coached.

Panthers fans don't have to wait to be asked to contribute; they can pledge at georgiastatesports.com by clicking on the football logo on the right of the page. The site already has brought in $6,000 in pledges, McElroy said. McElroy is preparing to ask Georgia State students to help with an $85 per semester increase in student athletics fees, which currently are $142 per semester. "That's very modest for a school that sponsors football," she said, adding that any fee increase would go into effect in the fall of 2008.

Football wouldn't be the only sport the Panthers would add. Women's lacrosse would come online at the same time, and one or two more women's sports would follow to keep the school in compliance with Title IX requirements.

This is something I want to keep tabs on. My wife is interested in pursuing a master's degree there and possibly working in the athletics department.

Good, soon they can become the 14th member of CAA football.

Which raises the question, what on earth will happen to the CAA? Even with the addition of ODU, everything falls out of place. Adding both ODU and GA State and kicking out the non-CAA (in sports other than FB) schools means a round-robin 7 team schedule, but definitely not (at least not in the beginning) at the same strength it currently is.

I think both GMU and VCU are 'looking' into adding FB, but I see neither sponsoring it in the near future if ever, since they're both quite large commuter schools (as is Georgia State if I remember correctly, but they have fewer DI FB teams in the state at this point).

More and more, the idiots at ETSU are looking bad every day. In fact, didn't the JC elite predict more I-AA teams would be dropping programs. Other than St.Peter's, that prophecy is a false one. HA! Good luck GSU Panthers!xthumbsupx

Thanks! The buzz is 90% positive. The latest nuggets of info via our alumni magazine are that Dan Reeves concedes that he would at least consider the possability of coaching the team and that he wouldn't be involved with this program building process if he didn't think it was achievable.
Between Dan's progress, the hiring of former Ole Miss basketball coach Rod Barnes, and the opening of our massive new dorm on campus this fall, our pieces are fitting nicely into place.
I think gauging fan and support interest this fall will be the catalyst in the decision process.
