PRINCETON, N.J. -- Ivy League champion Princeton and runner-up Dartmouth headlined the All-Ivy teams, with Tiger and Big Green student-athletes claiming 17-of-30 First Team nods and 28-of-60 overall honors.
Yale boasts back-to-back Ivy League Rookie of the Year selections, with freshman quarterback Griffin O’Connor joining running back Zane Dudek (2017). Despite appearing in just three games for Yale, O’Connor made the most of his opportunity, averaging 409.7 passing yards per game. Two of O’Connor’s performances—465 passing yards against Princeton and 436 passing yards against Brown—rank among the top four all-time in the 146-year history of Yale football.
The Huntington Beach, Calif., native compiled 1,229 passing yards, eight touchdown passes, 13 rushing yards and 1 rushing touchdown. O’Connor was twice named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week (Nov. 5, Nov. 12) and was the STATS FCS National Rookie of the Week on Nov. 5.
After leading Princeton to an undefeated season—the second in program history (1964) and the 13th in Ivy League lore—head coach Bob Surace was named the Ivy League Coach of the Year for the second time (2016) since the award was instituted in 2014. He guided the Tigers to their 12th all-time Ivy League title and their first outright crown since 1995.
Surace coached Princeton units that rank among the top 10 nationally in scoring offense (2nd, 47.0 points per game), total offense (3rd, 536.8 yards per game), scoring defense (4th, 13.0 points per game) and total defense (11th, 297.3 yards per game). He is 1-of-15 finalists for the Eddie Robinson Award, presented annually to the coach of the year in the FCS.
Ivy League champion Princeton paced the League with 15 All-Ivy selections, including a League-high nine on the First Team led by unanimous pick senior quarterback John Lovett (Wantagh, N.Y.).
Lovett is 1-of-25 finalists for the Walter Payton Award, presented annually to the most outstanding offensive player in the FCS. He accumulated 894 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground—concluding his collegiate career with a rushing touchdown in an Ivy League record 20-straight games. He also tallied 1,833 yards and 18 touchdowns through the air.
Dartmouth, the Ivy League runner-up, closely followed the Tigers with 13 All-Ivy honorees and eight First Team honorees. Senior offensive lineman Matt Kaskey (Winnetka, Ill.), senior defensive lineman Rocco Di Leo (Elmhurst, Ill.), senior linebacker Jack Traynor (Lake Forest, Ill.) and junior defensive back Isiah Swann (Queen City, Ariz.) each earned unanimous First Team nods.
Swann is 1-of-25 finalists for the Buck Buchanan Award, presented annually to the most outstanding defensive player in the FCS. He leads all of NCAA Division I—FBS and FCS—with nine interceptions on the season as part of a Big Green defensive unit that allowed just 12.0 points and 280.4 yards per game—both top five in the FCS.
After placing third in the League with a 4-3 mark in conference play and 6-4 overall record, Harvard tallied 10 All-Ivy picks split evenly between the First and Second Teams.
Columbia (6), Penn (5) and Yale (6) each finished 3-4 against Ivy League opposition and claimed at least five All-Ivy selections. Columbia led the grouping with four student-athletes on the First Team. Penn—senior linebacker Nick Miller (New Market, Md.)—and Yale—junior wide receiver Reed Klubnik (Austin, Texas)—each had a student-athlete earn a unanimous First Team nod.
Miller joins Swann as 1-of-25 finalists for the Buck Buchanan Award. He registered 87 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss and 6.0 sacks on the year.
Brown (3) and Cornell (2) each boast multiple Second Team All-Ivy honorees. Cornell junior defensive back and return specialist David Jones (Sugar Land, Texas) was the lone student-athlete to be recognized at multiple positions, reaping Second Team All-Ivy accolades on defense and All-Ivy Honorable Mention honors on special teams.
The 2018 Asa S. Bushnell Cup Presentation, honoring the Ivy League Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, will take place on Monday, Dec. 3, at the New York Hilton Midtown, and broadcast live on ESPN+. The Bushnell Cup finalists will be announced on Tuesday, Nov. 27.
