View Full Version : Tailgating has already started at ASU for the Saturday night game vs rival Tuskegee

I've made it to Montgomery and gates for tailgating opened up at 9:00am this morning. Tuskegee and Alabama State fans from all over the country have taken advantage of the early gate opening for RVs and tailgating. It's only 2:35 and the tailgating area is already over 50% full. To be honest there's more Tuskegee fans right now than ours but I'm sure that'll start changing tonight and as we get into tomorrow.

I'm definitely going to enjoy it but if Tuskegee rolls in here and kicks our arse again on Saturday night the party will definitely be ruined for me. These country bumpkins are already out numbering us out here about 2 to 1 so far. Hopefully this isn't an omen of bad things to come.

When I retire, I swear I'm going to spend a month just touring the south and going to some of these games. Y'all are having too much fun.

Also, what am I looking at in that third picture. Is the dude on the right sitting down? Is the dude on the left 8 feet tall?

Big Mike is standing on a box he uses while grilling. Without the box he's still about 6'4. He was one of the Captains on the 81 conference title team that my dad played on.

That's a platform attached to the grill, ST. He's standing on the platform.

Good stuff, ASU. Hopefully the weather gods will continue to bless that area during the weekend.

Thank you...that makes a lot more sense. He's tall...he's just not like Manute Bol tall.

I would suggest the Labor Day Classic over the Turkey Day Classic. Tuskegee our traditional Turkey Day Opponent is now our Labor Day Classic opponent and the atmosphere is insane. Tuskegee and Alabama State are only 36 miles apart so its a VERY intense rivalry.

Lot's of events planned this weekend with a few celebrities and stars making some appearances. Because of so much going on out team actually boarded buses a few hours ago and they're practicing at Auburn today.

I couldn't imagine the hell that would be raised if they limited tailgating for 5 hours. The big time HBCU games down in the parts have tailgates that last from Wednesday through Sunday.

For Tuskegee and Turkey Day Classic we open the gates 2 days prior to game day at 10 am for tailgating. For Big games like Jackson State, Southern, or Grambling we open them on Friday at noon.

Do some of you get to tailgate that early because the stadium is off campus or enough off campus so the universities can say they are keeping students safe? Our field is on the edge of campus right next to housing so we are only allowed to BEGIN tailgaiting 6 hours before kickoff. IT SUCKS! Student safety they say. Right. Man I want to kick it up more than a notch at the games...

Seems like a BS reason to me. Our RV lot is 200 feet from our largest dorm (because our largest dorm is our stadium) and they start tailgating on Thursday.

Our stadium is on campus. Days like today it's needless to say that none of the students went to class today. Most SWAC stadiums are on campus outside of Jackson State and Texas Southern.

I agree. But I bet one day our admins will pay a company big dollars to "learn" how to expand tailgating safely. xlolx Who knows, they might even conclude after paying hundreds of thousands of dollars that opening up tailgating an extra 30 minutes to increase the overall fan experience...xcoffeex

There was an article in last Friday’s Wall Street journal about how colleges fudge and generally lie about their announced attendance, which is usually much higher than the scanned attendance. There seems to be some of this fudging going on in the fcs ranks also.

I don't disagree at all there. But that's not the case with us! Buy ticket sales the game was a sellout at 27,500 but the rain and weather right before the kickoff steered some away. We count out attendance based on butts in seats not ticket sales.

From the article:
The average count of tickets scanned at home games—the number of fans who actually show up—is about 71% of the attendance you see in a box score, according to data from the 2017 season collected by The Wall Street Journal. In the Mid-American Conference, with less-prominent programs like Central Michigan and Toledo, teams’ scanned attendance numbers were 45% of announced attendance.

...

When Arkansas hosted No. 21 Auburn, scanned attendance was more than 25,000 lower than announced attendance. Overall last season, Arkansas’s scanned home attendance was 58% of its an-nounced attendance as the Razorbacks went 4-8. Nonetheless, Reynolds Razorback Stadium is reopening Saturday after a $160 million renovation that increased capacity by about 4,000. An Arkansas spokesman de*clined to com*ment.

...

The NCAA accepts the an-nounced attendance numbers schools submit “at face value,” NCAA spokesman Christopher Radford said.

I was at the game....It was packed. Lots of people outside. Many never sat down. Let their kids play in the bounce houses above the east end zone and just watched the game from the terrace. We live in the south carolina where football attendance is actually sparse outside of clemson & south carolina. I laughed when I realized my son had never been around that many black people. He had a ball & got to explore state's camps. going back to for him to visit tuskegee soon. headed to nca&t on saturday with famu and southern coming up when we go visit my daughter who's in school at lsu.

That's my beef with HBCU ball as a whole. We don't stop filing into the stadium until mid 2nd quarter because so many of us are on "CP time" when attending games for whatever reason. A lot of people stay tailgating until after kickoff, then you get that surge of late people plus late leaving the tailgate people all at one time at the gates which causes another delay.
