Still the only school to build a new stadium and then drop a program.

The stadium's still there, unused.

A waste of money, truly. xsmhx

Meanwhile... to keep it related... how many ex-FCS programs still have their football stadiums for other purposes (e.g. soccer, lacrosse)? I can think of Fullerton, Hofstra, Northeastern...

I haven't been there since 1996- but then that was the case with Vermont. Not sure if it is still there or not.

Of course Nickerson Field at Boston U., and probably several of the fields once used by MAAC teams.

Vermont moved its soccer teams to a new on-campus field in 2011. The Centennial Field baseball portion was rebuilt for the Class-A Vermont Lake Monsters. UVM club football now plays at South Burlington High School. Centennial is still used for high school soccer.

Was Wichita State ever considered I-AA or no? They played in the MVC back when they sponsored football and played against some of the current MVFC members (both ISU's and SIU).
They still have their stadium that they used for football, although it's just used for track and field now: https://goshockers.com/sports/2015/5/26/Cessna_Stadium.aspx?id=12

They need to bring their program back. They beat NDSU 13-0 in the Pecan Bowl in 1967. That cannot stand.

Has any other college in Texas ended its football program? I thought they couldn't get enough football down there...

I remember when the Tampa Spartans were D-1. They dropped football in 1975 after the Buccaneers were organized.

Wichita St was always I-A, though the Missouri Valley was a hybrid conference (Drake as well as SIU and the ISUs)

Paul Quinn college ended their football program as well.

I thought ut-a was turning the corner a few years back as they hosted some type of HS showcase game between txHS kids north/south(east) mid-summer and had actually signed a frosh class (or two) ala the hbu route? I could've sworn they even had a head football coach.

Paul Quinn college ended their football program as well.

Paul Quinn was on the verge of bankruptcy (as was the former school they acquired the campus from, the defunct Bishop College), was down to 400 students, and according to The Atlantic had a graduation rate of 1%. The president turned the football field into an urban farm to make ends meet for the school.

Looking at this picture reminds me of the Stewart MN HS football field ten miles east of me. They were our second biggest rivals at Buffalo Lake. They had the best field in the 212 Conference- the janitors watered it in the summer. Ours was used for PE and grade school recess so it got beaten down pretty bad. When their school closed, they plowed it up and planted crops. Sad to think about what it used to be like.

Indeed. I meant ended the football program voluntarily, and should have said so. :)

Well, Lamar ended theirs years back. They were going to use the money to become a basketball power. We know how that worked out. They ended up bringing football back.

They had potential in basketball. They just had, and still have, terrible administration. With the football talent in the Golden Triangle and the oil/refinery money, they should be in the playoffs every year.
