ISUr JR RB James Robinson should be "up there" as one of the top 3-5 RBs in FCS, but probably won't get enough touches due to our depth at RB .. Spack also needs to feed JR RB Markel Smith and SO RB Jordan Birch.

Quick background on Robinson ... he came from small IL HS having set almost every RB record in Illinois .. but he got here very out of shape summer of 2016 and not having been challenged much in HS. But he still played as true FR in our RB by committee rotation (post Coprich in 2016) before getting injured mid season. So he started behind and got further behind due to injury. He spent the off-season and then his SO season finally developing at FCS level .. his first full season of real competition.

His stats are below .. last season, we were playing very short-handed on our OL having lost 4.5 starters to graduation, then had 2 new starters injured good part of season. Robinson averaged 5.7 ypc sharing reps with Smith and Birch. This year we return 4.5 OL plus got our old OC Beathard back ... so most of Redbird Nation is thinking his 5.7 ypc is going further north this year. Unfortunately, he'll never get Coprich reps because Coprich didn't have anyone worth sharing reps with, like Smith or Birch.

Galloway is overrated IMO. He seemed to have decent hype around him last year and didn't really do all that much.

If there's another established possible candidate from the OVC my money would be on Oatsvall.

He did get shut down at times and I don't think anyone thinks he is an elite player but he sure played well against Ole Miss. I don't know why he would be overrated. He is probably a 12-25 type RB in FCS and preseason 1st team because of the losses in the OVC. I would imagine he is #2 in OVC behind Terry with with Johnson or Williams just behind him.

I am going to wager that Kealand Dirks may be on that list by seasons end.

Easy comp is former Furman RB Jerome Felton, who was the same size (6'0 250) and played 9 years in the NFL as an All Pro FB. Felton was on the Payton Watch list as a senior.

I think Dirks is faster than Felton and, if healthy and Furman can make a postseason run, could have up around 200 carries. It would not surprise me to see him with an Eric Britenstein-like season, though I doubt he'll carry as much water for Furman's offense as Britenstein did for his.

I will say Isaiah Saunders will be looked at and talked about as the year moves on. This is a bruiser of a back that was highly successful against Colorado State in our last bowl game.

Its too difficult for an offensive player at NDSU to put up the #s needed to garner Payton votes....the system doesn't really allow for it.

That always happens. One publication this preseason listed the "Top 50" SoCon players, and did not list a Furman offensive player until #28. Furman had hands down the best offense in the league last season, but distributes the ball to so many different players, that no single guy has eyepopping offensive stats.

They use multiple running backs and don’t throw a lot. They usually don’t have one guy who puts up huge numbers.
