The Robert Morris University football program has announced that 13 players have agreed to continue their careers for head coach Joe Walton and the Colonials. Among the new additions to the RMU roster are five from Pennsylvania, including four from the WPIAL, three from Florida, two each from Ohio and New York and one from California.

Joining Robert Morris in 2007 from Pennsylvania are quarterback Aaron Smetanka (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Catholic), offensive lineman Corey Konycki (Hunlock Creek, Pa. / Wyoming Seminary), wide receiver / tight end Sean McElhinny (McDonald, Pa. / South Fayette), defensive tackle / offensive lineman Michael Puskaric (McKeesport, Pa. / Serra Catholic) and linebacker Aaron Dorondo (Fenelton, Pa. / Butler).

The 6’4”, 210-pound Smetanka was a two-year starter at North Catholic, establishing single-game records for passing yards (370) and touchdown passes (6) in 2006 while garnering North Fabulous 22 honors according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Also in 2005 Smetanka led Class A of the WPIAL in passing with 1,751 yards and also threw 15 touchdowns. Konycki, 6’5” and 300 pounds, anchored an offensive line at Wyoming Seminary in 2006. In 2004 and 2005, he was named to the Super 33 All-Star Team at Bishop Hoban High School, where he helped anchor an offensive line that rushed for 2,567 yards in 2005.

McElhinny was a two-year starter for South Fayette, posting totals of 43 catches for 586 yards and five touchdowns over that span. At 6’5”, 235 pounds, McElhinny also was a three-year starter on the basketball team at South Fayette. The 6’3”, 290-pound Puskaric played on both the offensive and defensive lines for Serra Catholic and was the 2006 team captain that finished 8-1 and advanced to the WPIAL playoffs. Dorondo comes to Robert Morris after two years as a starting linebacker for Butler. On his career Dorondo, 6’1” and 215 pounds, finished with 115 tackles, including four sacks, and also posted five forced fumbles and two interceptions.

Joining the Colonials from Florida are running back Myles Russ (Boca Raton, Fla. / West Boca), cornerback Rolf Bathold (Naples, Fla. / Lely) and linebacker James Kirk (Miami, Fla. / Felix Varela). He attended Chittenango High School, where he garnered all-conference and all-district honors both his junior and senior seasons on both the offensive and defensive lines. Francis, 6’5”, 290 pounds, was a three-year starter on the offensive line at Troy Christian, garnering honorable mention all-state honors in 2006. He retired Last year from Seminary. But the kids at Wyoming Sem are totally different from some of the Milford kids. They have some kids with VERY questionable academics, but my comment was out of the blue as that doesnt mean that is the case with RMU's kids.

Robert Morris currently doesn't have anyone from Milford on the roster, so this is some new territory for the team. However, RMU is pretty stringent when it comes to academics. They do pick up a fair number of Prop 48 kids and get them used to the programs, but very few kids have been forced to leave the team because of academics.

Coach Joe Walton does a fairly good job at getting into the background of his players. Sure, one slips through the cracks every so often, but RMU does have a fairly good track record.

And in regards to the stadium...it sits 3,000 right now and they left the other side open for expansion, partly because of a construction/financial gaffe and partly because of a semi-interesting view.

I always got the impression that Walton was a tough taskmaster, back to the days when he was Walt Michaels' assistant with the Jets. Good for him.

Just a note on the Milford kids, they came to Moon to play the RMU JV team. I thought it was a good idea as far as recruiting goes. It gave about 50 kids an unoffical visit.

I think there are a few guys from Milford on other NEC teams and there are many on FBS level.
