Furman went very early in spring practice to get the players more time in the strength training program - again - Clay want's a more physical team. Rising Sophomore LB Elijah McKoy is mentioned as an example gaining 8 pounds in five weeks - up to 6-2 226.

Reading between the lines and what we saw in the spring - I expect Furman to be more multiple on offense - Clay mentioned that another coach in the SoCon mentioned to him that you play three offenses. Clay brought up the diversity in the SoCon from the Citadel to Samford. He felt Furman utilizing: the Gun, double slots, and three back… helps them get the defense prepared for playing opponents.

Obviously, Clay wants and expects to get Furman back to being a year end year out top ten team.

I always enjoy listening to Hendrix. He's open about the team's weaknesses and seems constantly focused on getting better and more physical on both sides of the ball.

He makes a few points about QB that I agree with. A lot is made of the departure of PJ Blazejowski, who was a key cog in Furman's very good offense in 2017. A QB in Furman's system, though, isn't called on to be transcendent. He has to make a few plays, but largely needs to protect the ball and play within the offense. We should have a few guys that can do that just fine.

I don't know if 2018 is the year Furman takes a major leap forward, but I certainly think that time is coming soon. Recruiting, weight room, conditioning, coaching, and player development are all trending in the right direction.

I like that… and a great choice. Speaking of Purple Haze a tweet from another coach related to what Furman is doing on offense. It's going to be exciting to see what Hendrix and Quarles create on offense as they get the players they want for whatever you call the Furman offense.

Furman typically ran a version of that play once a game, and it went for huge yards and more often than not a touchdown nearly every time.

The teams that were able to slow Furman down on offense were the ones with a bigger and more physical defensive front. Those teams could afford to keep their safeties deeper and try to limit Furman's ability to run this play. If you couldn't slow down the Paladin ground game, though, it was only a matter of time before you gave up a touchdown to Schumpert.
