House Panel Backs JSU Stadium Plan. (http://www.clarionledger.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070221/NEWS010504/702210362/1001/NEWS)

A bill that would give Jackson State University $66 million in bonds to build a football stadium is headed before the Mississippi House of Representatives.

House Bill 1739, approved late Monday by the House Ways and Means Committee, is expected to be discussed this morning by the full House.

It is the fourth time JSU has asked for funds to build an on-campus stadium.

But this time, money for JSU's stadium is linked to a new medical research park at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, something that could push the bill through the Legislature.

"I think it's got a great chance of passing and it's an absolutely huge economical development for the city of Jackson," Rep. John Reeves, R-Jackson, said. "It will revitalize parts of downtown and also bring in plenty of high-paying jobs."

Reeves plans to amend the bill to give UMC $5.4 million to tear down JSU's current football home - Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium - and $25 million to UMC for its start-up of a medical research park in Memorial Stadium's current location on North State Street.

The bill could dole out nearly $100 million for downtown development.
