I don't think you can make any statements in South Carolina how about who is third after the big two.

Clemson and USC ( Probably USC first unless you are in the upstate, then Clemson)

Third might be SC State on a statewide basis but its strenght is more likely in the Columbia Orangeburg area. It really depends on where you are located.

Upstate (Except for Spartanburg County) Furman probably would be third but my Wofford friends would probably disagree.

Charleston and the low country south, Citadel. Grand Strand- CCU.

All the rest are lumped together with small fans followings due to lack of press coverage. Which is sad. In Baltimore alone there are five D.I basketball schools. Towson, Loyola, Morgan State, Coppin State and UMBC, but all that gets mentioned in the Baltimore Sun is the school from College Park.

But honestly in Gville County I know few people that even think of the Citadel unless they or a family member attended. It is a tough choice past three. My guess is the same would be true for Furman down it the lower part of the state.

I based my list off Sun coverage. But you're right the Post doesn't give to craps about lacrosse. It's front page stuff up the road.
Based on that, I would move Loyola College up just below Hopkins on your list. :twocents: Putting anyone below UMES is a comical slap in the face.

Coppin State has had strong NCAA tourney play. They play an abusive OOC basketball schedule to fund the entire athletic department. I wouldn't go there after dark though.

Also McDaniel College dropped off the map after then changed the name from Western Maryland College. You omitted them from your listing.

I think my problem with Loyola is that if you said Loyola around here most would probably think of Loyola Marymount in Arlington. I do know they are the Greyhounds (aren't they?).

haha reputation point for that one.

In NC, the ACC schools are king, although in football only I would give ECU the nod over WF/Duke but in overall name recognition it would go:(public schools)

1. Chapel Hell
2. NCSU
3. ECU
4. App (3 and 4 can switch off depending on what you're looking at, ie student reputation or who has put politicians in office to basically bribe the UNCBOG for more money, so it depends on what you are looking at)
5. UNCC
6. UNCW
7. UNCG
8. WCU
9. UNCA
10. UNCP
11. Whatever else

Private schools I would go with
1. Duke
2. WFU
3. Davidson (only here because they haven't produced Nat'l Basketball champions, academically I think they are better than Duke and WFU)
4. Elon
5. Lenoir-Rhyne is an unsung school that has some great programs.

Strictly my opinion, and I'm keeping the theme towards football only...

OREGON---

1. University of Oregon
2. Oregon State University
3. Linfield College
4. Portland State University
5. Western Oregon University
6. Southern Oregon University
7. Eastern Oregon University
8. Oregon Tech

Duck fans seem to be the most passionate about their team, probably due to the overall success of the team. Beaver fans are coming up but still, my opinion, fall short of the Ducks. Linfield can boast about not having a losing season in 47 years, so a loss by them is truly a big deal. We are working on our ranking, but I would say we still fall short of Linfield. The others I ranked in proximity to Portland, except for Oregon Tech which I am not sure if they still play football, and, being that I do not know, they must not be too popular if they do.

Texas IMO:

1. University of Texas and no one is even close
2. Texas A&M - could go to 1st place if UT starts losing and the aggies start winning.
3. Texas Tech -Big 12 has been good to them.
4. Baylor and TCU(tie)- One because they're in the big 12 and the other one because they keep winning.
5. UTEP - Could be fourth except they have almost no following except for way out in West Texas.
6. Tie: UNT,SMU,Rice, University of Houston

Note: if ever one of the FCS teams in Texas ever starts winning at an elite level(9 or more wins per season) that school could easily take the 4th or 5th place in the rankings.

7. Texas State- Personally I think that we are very close to popularity to number six. Again if we ever put three or more 9+ win seasons in a row with a national championship appearance we could easily be in the top 4 or 5.

8. Tie: Sam Houston State and SFA- Both schools could easily be in the top 5 or 6 most popular schools in Texas with three or more 9+ win seasons with a national championship appearance.

9. Texas A&M-Kingsville - They get more coverage than either PVUA&M or Texas Southern.

10. Prairie View A&M- massive losing streak made them a household name a few years ago. They have a great coach finally though and within a couple of years will be a SWAC contender.

11. Texas Southern

I think that there are at least half a dozen other D-II schools and a dozen more D-III and NAIA schools.

Wrong. Englestad Arena has a capacity of no more than 12,000. During home wknds, it regularly "sells out" at around 11,500. Lots of people in ND are sioux hockey fans, some Bison fans who love hockey included. When it comes to hockey, Grand Forks and UND are king. Everything else is NDSU.

People are hockey crazy in North Dakota? That would be news to me, this is not a hockey state. You would think a hockey state would actually have more then a handful of high school teams and multiple hockey towns instead of just one(Grand Forks).

As for who is #1 in ND....
1.NDSU
1.UND

School enrollemnts are similar and I would say fan support is pretty even as well in the state. Of course UND fans love hockey(attendance is about 12-13k) and NDSU fans love football(attendance is about 16-17k which is almost double UND's attendance).

Massachusetts is dominated by pro sports, especially the Red Sox and Patriots. That said, among the DI schools:

1) BC is absolutely the most popular college program in terms of athletics, being the state's only FBS school and a longtime darling of the Boston media. (Although an interesting anomaly which their new ACC friends are discovering is that a lot of people in the Boston area don't like them for a variety of reasons.)

After that, it's hard to quantify rankings among UMass, Northeastern, Harvard and BU for a lot of different reasons, but here's my subjective view in terms of overall popularity:

2) UMass: The flagship state university, and a distant second to BC in overall sports attendance. Many alumni live here, but it suffers from being located 100 miles west of Boston in a state where the population is concentrated to the east. Grossly undersupported by the Legislature, but a sleeping giant.

3) Harvard: As previously noted, in a class by itself for obvious reasons, but doesn't have a whole lot of relevance to the average Massachusetts resident outside Cambridge. Football attendance is inflated every other year by the Yale game.

4) Northeastern: Large private urban school with many alumni. Popular for its co-op program which places a lot of grads in the workplace. Hockey is its biggest sport; little support for FB or any other sports.

5) BU: Academically, would rank third behind Harvard and BC among the Division 1 schools, but athletically it's hockey, hockey and hockey. There were a few tears shed when they dropped football, but not many. By the way, did I mention hockey?

6) Holy Cross: Small Jesuit college which prides itself in its academic excellence. Would have ranked near the top in terms of athletic popularity years ago, and was invited to be a charter member of the Big East. But their administration chose to de-emphasize intercollegiate sports some 25 years ago.

Easton High School is bigger in Easton than Lafayette. They get more for their high school games.

Do you have attendance figures for Easton High School. They do draw a nice crowd, but I played their in high school as well as its not like their were 10k at every game.

The more I think about it the more I would agree that SC State gets number three. I would have to think real hard about number four. From support ( attendance), yes. But honestly in Gville County I know few people that even think of the Citadel unless they or a family member attended. It is a tough choice past three. My guess is the same would be true for Furman down it the lower part of the state.

You must not have been in G-Vegas very long FU! The Daniel Brothers of Fluor are Citadel Men. The Daniel building, the tallest building in the ville named for these Citadel Men. They also found it in their hearts to donate some money to FU! I went to a Gville area Citadel Club meeting last month that had more people in attendance than FU has students at bball games. When we play y'all in bball you can't hear much of the crowd but can always hear CI-TA-DEL in the background! We have fewer living Alumni than FU, or SCSU and fewer students but you are fooling your self if you think SCSU or FU have more power or influence in this State or Country than The Citadel!

I think the thread subject was popularity in the state. I interpreted popularity to mean athletics and that usually means football and basketball. Popularity can be debated all day. I would not put Furman third except in the upstate. Which is why I said the state is very regionalized.

We also have a few business leaders, medicine, more lawyers than I even want to consider and the sciences. Father of behaviorism former Secretary of Education. blah blah blah. :smiley_wi

I think I would still pick State for third.

As an aside I don't think we have drawn squat for basketball since we moved on campus. We used to get a good Greenville crowd that disappeared when the team moved and of course went down more than a little

That Stanford number is misleading as anyone will tell you - only for the USC game did they have anything close to that number of butts in the seats. Fresno sucked and still filled up 90+% of capacity. UCLA and Cal are nearly identical, but Cal's attendance number is 87% of capacity and UCLA's is 68% with a larger population to draw upon.

You started out with some great facts, but you just had to end with that one very subjective statement...

At least we both outdraw Duke basketball (10,000 at Cameron Indoor) Note the sarcasm.

If forced to rank them 1-12, I would say that's a pretty good lineup, though I would have to put Grambling ahead of both Tech and ULL. You have to remember both Southern and Grambling have a national following and you can find people in just about every state in the country who have heard of the Bayou Classic, Eddie Robinson, etc.

As far as the state schools, other than Southern and Grambling, La Tech is probably first due to women's basketball, Karl Malone, Terry Bradshaw and some modest success in football over the years. There's little separation among the rest. ULL and ULM hurt themselves with the name change a few years back and folks around the country can't tell them apart anymore. Not having football for 18 years hurt our recognition but now being the third largest school in the state and bringing back football has helped get us back on the map a little bit.

We have fewer living Alumni than FU, or SCSU and fewer students but you are fooling your self if you think SCSU or FU have more power or influence in this State or Country than The Citadel!

SCSU has more power than The Citadel, without a doubt. The vast majority of their support has likely never seen the campus and probably can't find Orangeburg on a map, but you are fooling yourself if you think that if The Citadel and SCSU were to be competing for something that State wouldn't come out ahead. That's not meant to be a slap at SC State, but in being SC's largest HBCU means they have a much larger fanbase to pull from.

My rankings using my unscientific "How many stickers I see on a regular basis in my travels about the state". This is just the in-state Div I schools:

1. South Carolina (The flagship university and carries the state name gets them the majority of the fans because Lord knows they haven't done much athletic-wise to earn it.)
2. Clemson ( Land grant status and football success draw in way more fans than number of alumni)

Significant gap btween #2 and #3 with it mainly being a regional deal. The rankings are based on what I've seen elsewhere in the state as all of them have appeal in their region.
3. SC State (See above)
4. The Citadel (The State Military school. Historic connections.)
5. Furman (Football success overcomes the private school limitation)
6. Wofford (See above)
7. College of Charleston (Basketball and baseball success)
8. Coastal Carolina ( New to the football game, but rapid success has a growing fanbase)
9. Winthrop (Basketball success)

NYU (no varsity sports) and Syracuse (sucks at football and overrated bball) are both private $$$$$$ "mucho dinero" type of schools with large nationawide followings because of their academics and only syracuse for sports.
So there is no debate on the SU and NYU comparison other than academics and everyone in NYC will give different sides.

If you're talking OTHER SPORTS (Not counting hockey):

T1) NDSU - This one is debateable
T1) UND - This one is debateable
3 through 9 are the same.
Half the population of the state of ND has attended a UND sporting event so far this year - or more than three times the metro area population of Grand Forks. One fifth of the state population has attended an NDSU event - or not even 2/3rds the metro population of Fargo-Moorhead. Which is more popular?

I agree.
The two Maryland Counties that are DC suburbs completely identify themselves as Washingtonians first, Marylanders second. The Post caters to DC, VA and MD. So it only is natural that VA schools get much more press than Baltimore schools. And when Georgetown is good in basketball, they are in a virtual tie with the Terps.

For my Dayton Flyers, I would say we are lucky to have any following statewide.... We get OK coverage in the Dayton Daily News, but with so may FBS schools in the state, tOSU, MAC, Cincinnati, it is very hard to garner much interest in an FCS program. YSU does a bit better with the "Tressel" connection, but even YSU is not widely followed outside of NE Ohio and a bit in Western PA. In some parts of the state, Mount Union just might be better known than either YSU or UD.

Take a look at. Each time that ASU or AAMU plays a game in Birmingham, it always outdraws UAB. The next time you're on the road look how many AAMU/ASU car tags you see compared to everyone else. Behind Alabama and Auburn their stuff is the highest selling in the state. ASU/and AAMU bring more attention, fans, excitement, to Birmingham than UAB ever will. Miles and Tuskegee are up there too. Samford and those other schools have no where near the following that Miles and Tuskegee has. Hell Samford had to play Miles just to boost their attendence last year. Miles and Tuskegee have played before crowds that JSU/and Samford have never seen before.

UND and NDSU both have strong followings, but I have found UND to be more popular statewide based on my observations while in other cities besides GF and Fargo. I would assume that is based on the hockey program, but that's nothing more than speculation on my part. Whatever the reason, I tend to see a lot more people wearing UND gear than NDSU throughout the state. In Fargo it seems to be about 70/30 in favor of NDSU. In GF it's 99/1 in favor of UND. Throughout the rest of the state I would estimate it to be about 60/40 in favor of UND. Go to Scheels in Fargo and you're likely to find just as much UND gear as NDSU. Good luck finding any NDSU gear in GF. Go to Devils Lake or Minot and you'll find a little of both but there tends be more variety of UND stuff available.

The Fighting Sioux are just a more prominent name on the national map than the Bison. Case in point... last year while listening to ESPN radio I heard a conversation about Wisconsin's basketball team being on the bubble for making the NCAA tournament. One of the hosts mentioned them getting beat by North Dakota State. The other host asked if North Dakota State was the Fighting Sioux. The first host said no that's the University of North Dakota. Neither one of them had a clue who North Dakota State was. That really puts things in proper perspective. NYU (no varsity sports) and Syracuse (sucks at football and overrated bball) are both private $$$$$$ "mucho dinero" type of schools with large nationawide followings because of their academics and only syracuse for sports.

Regarding South Carolina... to be honest, I don't know if I've ever seen a SCSU fan, not around here at least. They must have a big following in the Orangeburg and Columbia areas, because they are non-existant in the upstate.

For my home state:

1. UNC-CH
2. NC State
------------
3. Duke
4. Wake Forest
5. ECU
6. ASU

After that, there is a cluster of schools like WCU, Davidson, the other UNC's, etc., that are pretty much indistinguishable.Sc State has a lot of fans and alums in the upstate. Especially the populated areas just below the base of the beautiful "Blue Ridge Escarpement". I doubt that the Mountain area has a lot of SCSU fans and you'll probably only see a bumper sticker or two when folks are sughtseeing or going to work at Oconee station. One reason that you might not notice SCSU fans in Gville-Spartanburg etc.. is that sadly official SCSU apparel can onyl be sold at the campus bookstore. You can visit a champs sports store and SC and find a Grambling,Southern, sweatshirt easier than an SCSU item. Hopefully this is something that the powers that be will correct. Here in the lowcountry I've seen Furman gear but Wofford,Presbyterian,Newberry,Clafin,Benedict and Francis Marion is hard to find.

NDSU can have basketball as I don't give a rat's behind about that boring game. They both have a very strong following in football. I think UND fans are going to claim UND to be more popular and NDSU fans are going to claim NDSU to be more popular. I highly doubt that any unbiased obsever would claim either one to be "hands down" more popular than the other. For NDSU zealots to scream so loudly about how much more popular they think NDSU is than UND shows the inferiority complex that so many of them possess.

Yes, but they also have nearly triple the population to draw from and nearly double the seating capacity in their venue. All other factors being equal, they should draw more fans to their home games. I don't think anybody would say the Detroit Lions are more popular than the Green Bay Packers because they draw more fans to their home games.

Not to mention the fact that NDSU fans don't have a hockey team to support. So, if UND fans and NDSU fans both have X amount of dollars to spend on tickets to sporting events... UND fans are going to have to divide that between hockey and football while NDSU fans can put it all into football. So, football attendance alone is hardly an accurate way to measure popularity between those two schools.

We have tha AD from und calling us on a regular basis begging for a game. He even says he would like to play us but he isnt "in the drivers seat on this one". That sounds nice and humble.

NDSU isnt going to give them the break they so desire, a game against the NDSU BISON at the Fabulous Fargo Dome, unless we really, really need a game. With the other concessions for the other major sports already in hand from friends like DaveK it becomes obvious.

That pretty much sums it up. If there was enough interest in NDSU sports then surely they would get the kind of radio and TV coverage that UND gets. Bison fans have forever been trying to compare themselves to the Sioux and convince themselves that they're just as relevant when it is painfully obvious they are not.

Like the guys on ESPN radio said while mentioning that the Wisconsin basketball team had been defeated by North Dakota State...

Actually that was in response to your ESPN radio remark and had nothing to do with Star2city's post. As for the whole Statewide thing there are a lot of factors involved. NDSU signing with WDAY limits what can be done as far as radio coverage, the school is trading off less radio coverage for better content and quality. In my opinion WDAY blows away what clear channel does for UND. However the cable thing is cool, it would be nice for NDSU to do something like. As for popularity none of this matters, NDSU=UND.

haha reputation point for that one.

Wow, You mentioned LR....Thank you!!
I would say that NC is regionalized like SC....the farther east you go ECU would dominate over ASU. Living close to Cullowhee people follow the great WCU, but there are still a lot of ASU fans. I know when I was at LR people talked alot about ASU, so I think ASU would be up there in football notarity!

Virginia:

I have no way to quantify this, and I can't remember all the schools in VA, but...
UVA/Virginia Tech (tied for first IMO, depends on what part of the state you're in)
JMU
GMU (final four last year gave them some mad exposure)
Mary & Bill
UR
VCU
Hampton
Radford
ODU
Christopher Newport
Mary Washington
Liberty
Washington & Lee
Virginia Union
Mary Baldwin
Bridgewater
Emory & Henry

If you are talking about popularity in VA only, NSU should be VERY high on that list. This is about university, not athletics. Hampton should be lower. Our popularity is more broad (national and international) thna VA. More of our interest is from outside of VA than VA.

Is anyone fromm Michigan? I've always wondered how Grand Valley State fairs in-state?
I would imagine they are third behind Michigan and Michigan St. Let's face it, no one gives a crap about Eastern, Central, and Western Michigan. xlolx
