Curious to get the thought of people on here. You can't include the rabid fans on this board though and has to be from actual experience. I used to hate Pitt fans ever since I went to a Pitt game where YSU was playing and ran into rude fan after rude fan that told me YSU was a JV team. Most of the people were annoyed they were playing us and many of the younger fans had little respect for the fact I had kids with me.

They were blown off the map by Clemson fans. The are THE WORST. I think it has something to do with the fact that all of the uneducated hill billy/rednecks that live around their isolated and deliverance type of town don't have a pro football team to support, so they all support Clemson. I can't get over all of the drunk fighting that occurred and their rudeness to my family because I was rooting against them. I had to leave the game early because I was concerned about my families safety at the game and their safety on the ride back to the hotel.

When my 8 year old daughter cheered for the other team, one 20 something kid told her to shut the **** up. I responded to him by saying hey kid, that isn't necessary have some respect she 8 years old and can cheer for whomsoever she wants. The kids parents then got involved and told me that I had no right to tell their son what to do. Then I told the kids parents (since the kid probably din't know) that Woody Hays was right, Charlie Bauman did have it coming and then all hell broke loose. Other opposing fans around me started to get hit with empty beer bottles (because all of the Clemson fans were drunk and throwing them). The police picked out opposing fans in certain areas and escorted them out of the area. Security told me there were so many drunk Clemson fans that they were concerned taking one of them out could start a riot that they were not staffed to deal with. That was the first time I've ever heard of anything like that.

Needless to say, it was probably the worst fan base I've ever been around.

Now I've met a lot a really good fan bases, but I was particularly impressed with Jacksonville State's fan base. People know football and there is a lot of hospitality. I've also always like NDSU's fan base as well. I've always had great experiences with NDSU's fan base.

Best: Montana, NDSU, New Hampshire
Worst: App State, Illinois State(outside of a few posters), Youngstown state
Anti social: Missouri State, Indiana State, Western Illinois (outside of STLawson)

i don’t know of anyone who hasn’t felt at home in Montana. Whether it was for a UNI game or a game against a Big sky opponent, the Griz fans have always been great.

NDSU Falls in an odd category. When I went to Fargo their fans were great. When they come to Cedar Falls they can be unbearable.

New Hampshire fans are a lot of fun at home and on the road. Good folks who love to talk football.

App State fans were by far the worst. They had some good posters on the board, but all my in person experiences were pretty bad, topped off by getting to my car and it being covered in soda, beer and garbage.

Illinois State fans in Normal are always pricks when I go down outside of the people we have tailgated with from AGS. Even some of their friends who come by are stndoffish and rude. Their fans don’t really travel. I always enjoyed Greg and Matt.

Youngstown State is a mixed bag, but as a whole they suck, if they show up. Couple of the posters on here are good guys and throw out invites. We’ve walked through their tailgate lots to head to the stadium before without as much as a hello. Fans in the stands usually aren’t very friendly if they are at the game. One time, maybe 2005, we were literally afraid on our way out of the stadium.

For as few fans fans as they have the last 3 schools are pretty antisocial. You can tailgate next to them and say hello and they don’t even want to chat or anything.

Painting any fan base with too broad a brush is dangerously unfair. I am no Clemson fanatic, but for your one or two or maybe a few bad experiences, I have had many good experiences with them. We were treated very nice by the locals every time I have been up there.

As bad as everyone used to berate GaSouthern, I had many good experiences with them. I couldn't get through the parking lot without many an invite to some meal or drink.

There are bad lots in every fan base, even ours. I don't condemn every fan base because of a few drunk idiots. People who can't handle their booze shouldn't drink. I guess that's why we all go to college, to learn how to handle it....lol.

I begrudgingly give some major props to SoCon foe Mercer. Since they joined the league, the first couple of years they provided first-class accommodations to visiting team's boosters to have a prime tailgate right outside the entrance to the stadium - kind of front-and-center. I don't know if they still do that, but giving up this kind of real estate on gameday is a very welcoming touch. I only "know" a few of them via multiple message boards, but even in message-board land 99% of them are both knowledgeable and mostly realistic (we all know that is a rare-combination on these boards). I have had or seen bad experiences at NC State and App State (unless I had a black t-shirt on). UNC is a bit of an "I don't care" crowd who never really seemed to be invested in the game - maybe they are better when they have good years, but I kind of doubt it. Tennessee is another "great" crowd - I have been there not really for or against them, but walking across the Tennessee River on people's boats you will get offered all the food and drink you care to enjoy.

I would agree with others, though. For the most part, the overwhelming majority of fan bases are there to enjoy the game and cheer on their team and are neither welcoming nor hostile. You will have pockets of great fans who invite you to their tailgate, and you will have pockets (typically of the inebriated kind) that want to taunt or cuss or treat you like you are personally their enemy. Fan bases get stereotyped based on how many people see of each of those varieties.

I think it is very wrong to generalize ANY fanbase. I don’t think threads like this one have any business being created. Stereotypes of fanbases should not exist. I have been guilty of this in the past myself on occasion, but that does not make it right. The truth is EVERY school has pricks as fans. A lot of these “pricks” really should not represent the school at all as they never even went to the school whose football team they are acting the fool for. But the vast majority of EVERY school’s fans are just good, normal people trying to have a good time at games just like you are.

I’d also like to add that occasionally in the heat of competiton (especially when disappointed by losing) that people who are normally good do some not-so-good things that they are very sorry for later. That DOES NOT make their actions acceptable in any way, but it happens. I’ll wager we’ve all made poor decisions in the heat of the moment at some point. And alcohol, often a big factor at sporting events, only enhances the probabilty of this.

I agree with the point that painting with too broad a brush is a bad idea. In my Georgia days I went to a number of away games, including Clemson. Clemson fans were the loudest but It was a good experience overall. The only really negative experience I had was the 86 UGA-Auburn game when the bastiges at Auburn turned fire hoses on UGA fans after the Dawgs won. Screw Albarn.

Since moving to Texas in 06 the only ACU away games I have attended are FBS games from the Mointain West and Sun Belt. Most fan bases have been great, maybe because we aren’t rivals and present no threat to beat their team. Air Force fans were particularly nice. This may change as we become more competitive.

im planing to go to the McNeese game next year. Everyone I know says they are the best fan base in the SLC.

Since people can be anyone they want online I won't address those. My comments are to in person experiences:

Enjoyable- NDSU. They've come to Cheney a couple of times now and win or loose its been nice to talk with these folks before and after the games. They are knowledgeable, reasonable fair, and passionate. Haven't been to a game in Fargo but on the road they are on their best behavior.

Worst- Montana State. If you go there for a game, get your seats with your fan base. If you sit in with the MSU fans be prepared to be sworn at, have stuff thrown at you and to take a defensive position. I passionately support my team but always in a supportive manner (we're out there cheering on kids, playing a game that will have no effect on world affairs, lets keep perspective). Nothing to deserve the way I've been treated in Bozeman. Last week MSU was in Cheney to play EWU. Next day I see a lady at Costco with a MSU shirt on. Asked her if she came over for the game. She responded yes and then, without skipping a beat started complaining about the officiating and how her son (who played for MSU) and other team members felt that officiating had robbed them. Did'nt phase her that EWU adjusted to MSU defense and ran the ball all over them (this is a relative thing, its EWU, running the ball is alwasy suspect) or that the EWU defense held their run offense well under their average.

Haven't been to a lot of away games, I have been to UNI, Iowa State, SDSU, EWU, Montana.

Don't remember anything about the UNI game except we lost.

The Montana and EWU fans were all great, I honestly didn't see or hear a single negative thing the entire time I was there. Very gracious.
Iowa State was also excellent, we tailgated with some ISU grads and fellow employees that I knew, it was awesome, we also sat right in the heart of the ISU crowd, not a single negative comment.

SDSU, sucks balls, terrible, off the charts bad last time I was there. Exact same scenario that I had with ISU, I tailgated with some friends and fellow company employees that were SDSU grads. Brutal, very negative, 20 years ago it would have gotten physical, I have mellowed with age. The actual game crowd was worse, there were 8 bison fans in our seat area surrounded by SDSU fans that chanted, over and over again for the first two quarters, **** the Bison, lots of little kids around, it was pretty lame. They were still chanting it when they were down by 4 TD's. My visits to a couple previous games were all pretty decent, don't know what was going on at this last one. This wasn't just a couple of fans, when you walked in the "SDSU" section of the tailgate with Bison colors, you caught ****, no one person came up in a friendly manner to invite you in or say hello. Weak sauce.

Not even going to waste time to go down there this year even though I have a feeling that the stands will be devoid of Jack fans.

By far the worst in person interaction I have had with opposing FCS fans is ISUr.

The worst overall is Iowa fans.

Cut the cat fans some slack, all that losing takes a toll on a person after a while.

Glad you had a good time. Hopefully you guys can get down here when we actually have our stadium more than half full. The playoff game last year was kind of pitiful by the usual standards. A rematch would be welcomed.

I haven't been to many away games either. Band has hindered my ability to go anywhere on our away weekends. However the Michigan State crowd my freshman year was probably to most fun crowd I've seen and that was my first college football game too. After we got off the busses we had to walk through the tailgate lot to get to our warm up area. After hearing about the asshats down at UF from the upperclassmen I figured we would get beer showers like they did but they were all really friendly and were actually offering drinks. xlolx On the way out of the stadium they were really complimentary of our show and how well we did. Even got a souvenir Spartan hat.

On the other end of the spectrum you have LSU fans. Who outside of the stadium are insufferable losers. One girl flashed us on the way into the stadium though so I can't complain.

FCS wise, the only away game I've been to is UTC. Students are total tools. The older fans are a classy bunch though.

The only places I can remember negative interactions were montana state, SDSU and Minnesota.

Uni was nice and people traded seats with us so we could sit with bison fans. We moved like 30 ft it wasn't a huge trade but it was a nice gesture.

Everywhere else it's just been nuetral.

The negative interactions were usually limited to one or two fans, except at SDSU.

You just don’t get it. I refuse to be lumped in with other people acting like fools if I am not being a fool myself. I will not accept it and will fight it with every fiber of my being. It is not oky to be criticized if you’ve done nothing to warrant said criticism. It’s just like a boss or teacher wanting to punish the whole office/class for the poor actions of one or a few. Homie don’t play that.

The only problem I ever had at Ga So was not with their fans but their security. Way back in the 90s sometimes, 93 I think, there were a bunch of cadets there in the stadium and they were all standing up on the front row of the visitors section cheering and a security guard came over and told them to sit down. They really were not doing anything wrong: no foul language or gestures, just yelling and cheering. Well, cadets being cadets told them what they could go do at that point. So they arrested them. Well not arrested them, but escorted a few of them out of the stadium. Needless to say I had fun berating those guards the rest of the game. They were not happy with me but I basically dared them to do something about it. Bunch of other alumni joined in they beat a tactical retreat before they tangled with a hoard of us.

My personal experiences:

UNI - mostly good people, been to the dome three times and never had a problem
ILSU - had mostly good interactions, except for one time when we had raw meat thrown on us (the WIU band) when we had to go through the ISU tailgate area back in the '90s
EIU - didn't interact much, all seemed fine to me

Outside the FCS:
Illinois - neutral...nothing bad, nothing especially great (except my sister-in-law is a U of I alumni and she's cool).
Northwestern - I think we outnumbered them
Mizzou - very gracious in their absolute dismantling of us
Northern Illinois - mostly good, but got shouted at once or twice by drunk college students. Made it all that much better when we beat them. But I do have lots of NIU fan friends too.

So, pretty much the only negative interaction was at ILSU, but that was one time, 20 years ago, and they were probably drunk.

I do think the anonymous nature of these sites can attribute to the negative image one might associate with a particular school. If you are a fan of a school that is well-represented on this board or any other similar board, you may think of it as an offshoot of your own team's fanboards and come across as very supportive of your team, and very critical of the opposing teams. Therefore, you may be seen in a negative light, especially by those fans who are not represented too well here. I realized this after we played UNI in the playoffs (great and fun bunch of people). I'm not naive enough to think Portland State does not have its share of "bad fans" out there. I'm sure if I were to sit down and have a beer with anyone on this site, I would discover that everyone is rather nice in person, just very supportive of their own team. Really, how can you fault anyone for being that way?

OVC: Pretty much all "meh" outside of JSU. EKU, SEMO, and TSU would probably contend for 2nd place.

FCS OOC: You can't help but be impressed with NDSU. The Fargo South-thing in Frisco is absolutely obnoxious, and true. The 2015 FCS Championship game was a home game for the Bison. Fans are nice and knowledegable. Was impressed and surprised with the fans Wofford brought to Jacksonville in the 2010 playoffs. UTC has a decent fanbase. Loved travelling to Lake Charles and meeting the McNeese fans.

FBS: I guess my favorite would be Kentucky. Fans were engaging, and honestly were surprised they beat JSU. Florida State's fanbase can be a little obnoxious. But being inside Doak Campbell during the chop when their mascot plants the spear at midfield was awesome. LSU would be, uh, the most interesting?

Made a trip to Fargo for the forgettable 2014 semifinal. Bison fans were great! No complaints with Fargo. Really fun atmosphere. Montana fans also seem great. I have never been to WGS but would love to take a trip.

From what I heard about the experience at the JMU game, Duke fans are not the greatest.

Cannot believe our fans haven't been mentioned here. That might just speak to the size of the school/fan base. Our fans suck.

Ndsu and Elon fans are the nicest I've met. And jmu fans have been redeemed in my eyes on AGS. They're still fairly awful in person (for the most part) but the JMU fans on here are pretty great.

Wow. So im from the Clemson area (Im a USC fan though). Its always rich to hear a Northern person rip on Southern college fans. You wanna talk rude horrible fans? Go to ANY NFL game up North. Its like taking the 5,000 worst fans in every SEC/ACC stadium them cramming them into one. Hell Philly has a JAIL in their stadium. But yeah some drunk frat boys at Clemson were worse.

I agree.

And while my favorite hobby here may be trolling Citadel fans because...well...yall are the closest thing to a rival we have now.....in 100% honesty The Citadels fans are the nicest and most polite fans you can probably ever hope for. Same for Wofford.

WORST fans...by far...Liberty. I dont know if its ummm...intimate frustration...but their students behind the sidelines from a players perspective were by far the rudest dirtiest fans we ever encountered. They threw marshmallows too. Seriously marshmallows?

The Eagles haven't had a jail in the stadium since they moved to Lincoln Financial Field in 2003. The crowd at the Linc is nowhere near as bad as it was at Veterans Stadium; I speak from first-hand experience.

I will say that in my experience NFL crowds are definitely verbally rougher than college football crowds, but I expect and kind of like the verbal back and forth when there are a decent number of visiting team fans in the stadium. With the NFL games I've attended, all of which except one were Eagles games, there usually are very few visiting team fans at Eagles home games (I've attended 22 Eagles home games in total), but all Eagles road games I've attended (14 total) have had crowds that were at least 15% Eagles fans and usually somewhere between 20% and 30% Eagles fans.

But for those I have been in my experiences have been pleasant.

NDSU fans were pleasant in Frisco.

I guess if you expect the worse you can never be let down. But it’s always a pleasure to encounter decent people.

Most people ARE decent. A few bad apples are spread throughout all fanbases though. Sometimes we just have the bad luck to come into contact with them. For example, I and some other Wofford students were told to “shut the **** up” and were cursed out by a woman at The Citadel back when I was in college. But that’s no reason for me to label the whole THE Citadel fanbase bad. I guess that’s the point I’ve been trying to make in this thread that some (but NOT the poster I am quoting) do not seem to get.

Most adult college fans are decent. Most college kids are pricks! They unfortunately end up being the face of your fan base. I mean just today I passed several Yotes fans leaving the game. I assume most are parents to have made such a long trip. I didn’t expect warm and fuzzies, they just lost. But I made it a point to at least wish them a safe trip home if I said nothing else.

Had a chance to meet a few parents and chat them up as we left the parking lot. Judging from the jersey number #88 that was the TE I guess. Lots of praise for our RB. Lots of praise from me for their QB. Kid took a beating and kept getting up.

All in all, I wished them well the rest of the way and safe travels. Imagine if we all just tried to be decent people. LOL. #Utopian

I have to agree that Montana Griz fans are tops. I was in Montana for the 2007 playoff game with my late half-sister who lived in Kalispell (miss you sis) and all their fans were very friendly and welcoming and took care of all my food and drink needs during my visit to their great state. Now I’m sure even Montana has their bad apple fans...I was fortunate enough not to come across any.

How about Georgia Southern. It's pretty close between the two, but I'd say GSU is worse in their stadium.

The Georgia Southern fans who made the drive to Birmingham to play UNH couldn't have been better, and the most interaction I had with them was at the half when we were winning 22-0. Of course the typical fan probably wouldn't drive 5 hours to a game that was suppose to be played in their own stadium when a major hurricane was forecasted for the following day.

It's disappointing to hear some fans have had a bad experience at a game in Bozeman.

I hadn't heard about the problems the SHSU fans had. Anyone over the age of 12 ought to know better than to do that.

There was some vandalism of a Bison bus when they came here for the playoffs. IIRC, they had some NDSU flags out and they were stolen. The Bison fans were great - said there's a few in every crowd and other than that they were treated very well. But it was embarrassing and the 'cat fans were upset that it happened.

I've heard stories on message boards that a few EWU fans have had problems like Iridebikes (the cursing and stuff - running into a clueless fan that blames the loss on refs is..well, if that makes a fan base bad then every fan base sucks. I find it annoying when someone does that but unfortunately it's common. I even see it on this site, where I consider the typical member to be much more knowledgeable than most). When I've been there, I've seen an obnoxious drunk or two that had things to say to us, but I don't let that kind of stuff bother me much.

Of course, I've heard stories from both sides of the Cat/Griz rivalry. I've personally seen poor behavior on both sides, at both stadiums, in the Cat/Griz rivalry. Again, I don't let it bother me when it's coming from the Griz fans, but it does bother me when it's the Cat fans being obnoxious. I try to get them to shut up or move along.

Basically, I don't know of a bad fan base at any of the places I've been, although I have run into a few bad fans at some of them. For the most part, I think you see what you're looking for. If you're a confrontational fan, or overly worried about confrontational fans, you'll probably see them. Probably the only places that don't have a few bad fans are where there are no fans. But hopefully you won't make it sound like all of the 5 to 25 thousand fans (or an entire city) are bad because you ran into a few knuckleheads.

I didn't know about any vandalism at that game but people were talking about it on Bisonville right after the game. I usually give students a pass for being idiots because they are usually idiots but the adults at SDSU were a little over the edge that day which surprised me at the time because I had been to three previous games down there without much of a problem.

I went to Utah for a wedding for one of my friends and had to sit in the temple "waiting room" even though I was a groomsman since I was not on a "temple recommend" but he is honestly one of the nicest people you would ever meet. He can laugh at anything since as he said, "If you believe in something that does not have tangible evidence, you have to be a little crazy".

Well since he is a good friend, I had to play this at his bachelor party. It was actually a fun party and his reaction was classic. He laughed for about a couple of minutes but his two brothers tried not to get mad as I "violated" their beliefs. He told them to calm down and be able to laugh when something is funny.

I honestly would consider moving out there since I love the scenery and the people are kind-hearted, but there are some things that I am a little hesitant on which makes me want to not move there.

Bad: If I had to pick 1, Delaware was prob the worst due to fans, but I’d like to think that was a few bad eggs. (See what I did there)

The only places I’ve ever had truly bad in person experiences were FBS. VA Tech and Maryland are both as bad as it gets. They can both get the death penalty from NCAA next time a real big boy team cheats for all I care.

Ranked in order.

1. Montana - Fans were awesome. Probably helped we lost, but I almost got tired of shaking hands saying thanks for coming and good game. Went to a Stockmans downtown and had a hard time paying for drink.

2. Sam Houston - They talked a little smack, but were cool with it coming back. Had a great time visiting Friday night with them. They mostly left after the game Saturday, but that's understandable given the short drive home.

3. Northern Iowa - They are alright. They were a little almost surprised fans would travel for an FCS game, but they were ok.

4. South Dakota - Meh, very indifferent. Weren't overly friendly but not rude either.

5. Illinois State - Weird. They are the most stand offish fanbase I've seen. You can't even make eye contact with them. I did visit with 2 of them that were pretty friendly, but the other three in their group kept their heads pointed at the ground. Tailgate was the same way. You walked by some Redbird fans and they all looked away so you couldn't even nod and say good game. Just odd.

6. North Dakota - Garbage. Ok, I know a lot of UND fans, and some are the biggest douchebags I know. They pretend FCS football is nothing until NDSU loses or UND is doing well and then my facebook feed fills up with these same tools posting about it. To be fair though, I also know a lot of decent UND fans but they'll always be last in these types of rankings. In-state rivalry. F em.

FBS

1. Kansas State - I didn't make it to this game (GD Siouxage cousin got married for probably the 2nd time of 5 or so :)), but my crew said these were probably the nicest fans they've ever met. They could barely move downtown without some KState fan congratulate them on the win.

2. Iowa - They were nice not overly friendly, but man the suicide line has to be off the hook when they lose. You couldn't find an Iowa fan (at least wearing Iowa stuff after the game) out in town.

3. Minnesota - Garbage. We were told we were cheering too loud after an NDSU touchdown. Not swearing, not yelling anything douchey. Just that we were too loud. F em. I know a lot of Goofer fans as well and some are alright, but there's a lot of douchebags in this fanbase as well.

**** you, too. Oh no, did that play Into the stereotype? Damn.

No, you are an asshole. And assholes are not thin skinned. But I know this won’t hurt your feelings because you already know you’re an asshole and are proud to be an asshole. I know your kind. I can tell your kind right away. You think you’re all that. And people act like they’re all cool with you. But a lot of people really hate your guts...they just hide it and won’t say it to your face. I know, I know, you don’t care...
Jesus H Christ I think you need to take some Midol or lay down until your bitchy cramps go away. You take being a twat to the next level. USeD fans, your crown has been taken xlolx

Yeah....I don't remember where I heard it. I did hear about some SDSU vandalism in the 2013 game.
I’ve heard some very disappointing stories about this as well, I get pretty fired up about it. Though IBY survives on Hobo Day after a loss to UNI wearing his bison gear, so there’s that.

SDSU not even mentioned? What a snub! xlolx

I'm not going to judge any particular fan base, but let's role play for a minute:

You're walking down the street minding your own business when suddenly five midgets run out of an alley and throw streamers at you.

F*** those midgets!
