SHSU beat The Citadel by one vote in the MSL category this week.

Drop 13 spots for a road conference loss to a Top 25 team. SDSU drops 5 for the same. Seems legit

The Wedge blog post for this week's poll: http://thefcswedge.com/ags-poll/ags-poll-top-25-week-1-results-2/

Some thoughts:

El Cid ranked above Samford? Come on voters... we're better than that.
8(!) of 12 CAA teams ranked and only 2 of 13 Big Sky teams ranked.
Maine with only 59 points is about the weakest #25 team I can ever recall seeing. With 82 ballots cast it's very clear the consensus is there really isn't a #25 team this week.

SDSU didn't look like Sam Houston State in Harrisonburg for 3 quarters.

The team that beat them also didn't struggle with West Alabama and Kennesaw State.

The Citadel lost to the #22 team... SDSU lost to the #3 team. It's not too tough to fathom.

There is a difference between 2 Top 10 teams playing each other vs losing badly to barely a Top 25 team.

Not really sure why Maine would get votes at all. Without the cancelled game, they'd be 1-3.

NAU is 2-2, with two FCS wins, a loss to a decent P5, and to a ranked FCS team.

Losing to a top 5 team is not the same as losing to a bottom 5.

No it isn't. When you put up a better fight (12 point loss) on the road at the #3 team you're not going to be judged as harshly as a team that lost on the road to at the #22 team by 21.

And The Citadel only dropped 10 spots... not 13.

With a team entering the rankings off of a bye and a 1-2 record through five weeks, it had to have been a weak field of options. The same happened with SIU entering off of a loss last week. Not enough teams want to be ranked apparently.

I don't think I've got the MVFC bias and your argument seems to have some holes in it to me as well. The Citadel is just having some trouble right now due to perceived (don't know if legit or not) strength considering their schedule. Then losing to Samford like that has a bigger effect that it might have.

If you think it's an MVFC bias thing I could probably go grab just the SoCon votes and see what that looks like for you.

Yep, I thought SIU was a weak #25 last week and they had 104 points. For comparison Maine's 59 points would've placed them no higher than #30 in any of the previous 5 AGS polls this year.

Neither WIU or SDSU got thrashed by 28 points. There are some differences. Sure there is a little MVFC bias, but The Citadel dropping is entirely on them. And Samford is nowhere near the level of USD or YSU.

The team that beat them also didn't struggle with West Alabama and Kennesaw State.

If you had been at those 2 games, with an unbiased perspective, you probably would not have gotten the feeling that Samford would lose either one. Taking the spread of a win can sometimes put one on a slippery slope. Would you compare your UTC score with Western and say that the Catamounts would beat JSU fairly badly? samford is also the team that scored more points on UGA than their 2 SEC opponents combined. LOL!

That's likely true but the SHSU/UCA game is really the SLC championship game each season and it also meant a playoff seed was on the line for the winner.

For me it showed that YSU didn't have the big dropoff as most thought and is a legit contender. It looks like they have a decent offense to go with a outstanding defense.

That game also showed that SDSU is a pretender. Defense is soft. We seem to not use our weapons as we should. We can't pick the right RB. And if I see a RB draw from the shotgun on our own 1 yard one more time, I am punting the nearest inanimate object next to me. I would rather see the return of our "Flash" package before that.

The Citadel played its worst half of football since we watched that Chatty game at the Press Box. They then had every chance to make it a one score game in the 2nd half. One bad half on the road against a Top 25 team and you drop 10 spots?

Look no further than The Citadel's results, D-1 games only, a 41 point win over 2-3 Presbyterian(who barely beat an NAIA team), a 6 point win over 2-3 ETSU and a 21 point loss to a ranked 3-2 Samford.

I stopped ranking Maine last week, but you can't assume a team would have another loss when a game has been cancelled.

Also, anyone who wants to claim MVFC bias, I can tell you that isn't the case based on the texts that the "circle of influence" shares.

Even though your number #23 team stomped your #18 team?

I think I ran into the trap of not knowing just how far to drop them. I probably had them too high going into last week. I didn't have Samford ranked going into last week either which led to where they ended up for me. I've been struggling with 15-25 all year it feels like.

I think we have a different understanding of what the word stomp means. Spotting a team 35pts and then shutting them out in the second half whilst being stopped on 4th down twice inside that teams 16 yard line in the late 3rd and early 4th doesn't qualify.

He's big time sandbagging xnodx

Agreed. It is near impossible to go undefeated in the MVFC unless your name is Da Bizun. I like seeing SDSU lose more than most, but even if they are underperforming up to this point I don't see 17 teams better than them. Hopefully I am wrong.

Thumper 76
October 2nd, 2017, 01:22 PM
I know you claim you don't sandbag but you're being way too hard on your Jackrabbits. They lost by 12 on the road to your #3 and you dropped them all the way to #18 but Sam Houston lost by 11 on the road to your #5 and they still hang in at #10?

He's big time sandbagging xnodx

No. That team I watched doesn’t deserve to be a top ten team for sure, really a top 13-15 team. Add to it their best win took another hit by having MSU drop their game vs Weber, you get their ranking.

Each voter has different strategies but it's still really early in the season to get too caught up with where teams were last week in your ballot IMO. Pretty much every week there's a team or two that I realize I should've had higher/lower based on the poll discussion and I adjust them regardless of what they do that next week.

I feel like falling into the not wanting to drop or move teams up too much in the early season polls is why the STATS and Coaches polls get so out of whack by mid and late season.

I think we are a better team than The Citadel, and we played conservatively in the 2nd half. I know that The Citadel does not accept excuses nor do they make excuses. Having said that, however, those guys have been distracted recently by a hurricane, travel issues, and the tragic loss of a former teammate. I am NOT taking anything away from our kids and the fine game they played. What I'm saying is that The Citadel is a much better team than what you might think from watching them Saturday.

The Citadel played its worst half of football since we watched that Chatty game at the Press Box. They then had every chance to make it a one score game in the 2nd half. One bad half on the road against a Top 25 team and you drop 10 spots?

I've seen teams win and lose a spot or two so no I do not think this is that out of line considering they were not a top 25 in this poll and thus the mindset of this groups voters. Also they dropped a nearly equal amount if we look at only SoCon voters so this was just not a good loss in many people's minds. I know you don't like it but that doesn't mean it is an incorrect assessment. If The Citadel did just have a bad 1/2 and I trust your judgment on that then they will get better going forward and will reclaim their rightful plkace.

With everything happening right now it is just murky and dynamic in the lower 10 spots and I think we all would agree they are in that range at this time.

Care to explain then? I know Sagarin isn't the end-all-be-all, but USD's opponents are rated higher, they went on the road 3 times already (compared to SDSU's 2), and most importantly they are undefeated against the schedule (compared to SDSU's 1 loss). I'm genuinely curious to know why you put them higher.

Drake 27.08 (232)
Bowling Green 51.30 (142)
North Dakota 48.39 (161)
Western Illinois 63.50 (90)
Average 47.57 (156)

The first three games for USD were against Garbage competition. History has been on SDSU's side in DI and that in my opinion counts for something. Western Illinois up to this point in my mind is the only quality win. Sagarin is crap. USD has to show me more in the MVFC meat grinder. Oh and lastly it's not like I don't have them ranked let alone in the top ten. But for you to say they belong above SDSU is a matter of opinion. The MVFC will bear out who deserves to be ranked higher. At this point in time one loss to a top 5 team by SDSU doesn't merit a huge drop in the poll.

So are we voting on this year or not? Because if we are, USD belongs in the top 5. If we aren't, USD should be given extra consideration for the whooping they put on the defending co-champ from the Big Sky. I'll agree with you that Sagarin is crap if you look at it as a stand-alone number, but I know you're smarter than that. If going on the road against a top 15 team and winning isn't enough to overcome a loss (all else being equal), I don't know what more USD can do throughout the year for you.

You're definitely entitled to your own opinion even if it's wrong.

No. That team I watched doesn’t deserve to be a top ten team for sure, really a top 13-15 team. Add to it their best win took another hit by having MSU drop their game vs Weber, you get their ranking.

Maybe you just have Weber ranked too low. ;)

I mentioned this last week, I'll do it again here. Voters not even looking at their ballots when they get them back is fairly unforgivable if you ask me and I have caught a lot of people doing this lately. It sort of pisses me off to be honest.

When you get your ballot back you have got to do your part and open the god damn thing up and look at it...in doing so you should probably compare it to Supe's how they fared list and see if you have left anyone out.

I was able to catch two while moving current ballots over to users historical sheets but I can not catch every miss because I do not have time to get all voters ballots moved over to their history sheets by the time voting ends.

Hell, I've got people not even replying to the emails I send to them by the time voting ends. Not gonna lie, it is getting under my skin pretty good at this point.

To each his own. I'll put my money on SDSU in the end. Now if USD proves me wrong at the end of the year so be it. That's why we have the poll for peoples opinions. You want to bag on SDSU yet look at the USD schedule other than Western.

I guess I am just old fashion. I have my own spread sheet that has my previous poll on it. Do,t need to be testing my memory.
It is kind of like Sups. 25 teams plus about 10 teams to watch. I change this each week as well. I just drag the previous teams over where I see them being. No way to miss anyone. I suggest people use a spreadsheet of some sort. Good way to sanity check it as well. It is the responsible way to do it.

Fixed missing JSU Gamecocks from last week. The 3 undefeated MVFC teams plus the shutdown Penguins are top 10 until some defeats start happening. Both WIU and SDSU didn't get blown out, hence 11-12. Elon's looking at a possible best in CAA, IF can take down JMU, which appears unlikely. Weber St is quietly setting itself up to be the Big sky champ, against team seemed to righting ship. But for now, best in WEST. Dartmouth is undefeated, see if they stay that way. Sorry Big south, Patriot, NEC, Pioneer, very few teams showed well through to this point. Congrats to UCA, maybe there are teams other than SHSU in Southland worthy.

Ok guys, time to treat this Rabbit like dogs do stuffed animals.

Same here - the only time I type in a new team or delete one is when I add or drop them to my watch list. When I move teams around, I drag them to the side while I move teams around. That way I never forget a team because they are sitting there in the adjacent column.

I keep my previous poll as a reference. I got burned in this poll right when I first started sending it in, I put "North Dakota" in the poll twice, Ursus caught and we fixed it.

Yes, a spreadsheet is an extremely simple answer that alleviates many problems. But even using this one needs to look at their ballot when sent back and compare to their sheet.

Do you think the cats deserve that spot for their close losses?? Your SDSU loss is not looking as good now.

Griz should maybe crack top 25 if they win next week. It would give them 4 fcs victories and losses to Wash and EWU.

Agree, neither Montana or Montana State deserve to be in the top 25.

The sad thing is that I had to fill out 25 teams, there is no reason for 25 teams to be ranked, and at least Montana's loss to EWU is starting to look better. No Ivy team is worthy right now (pretty obvious), the MEAC and SWAC will get no love from me except NCAT until they lose and then I can get rid of them (they took their football and left), UNI looks bad and so does SIU, UTM lost to AP (I thought about AP, but one more win and they are in), NAU is hot and cold and Cookus needs to actually play a full season before they get love from me, and in comes UM.

Maybe? I'm not yet convinced Idaho State is a powerhouse, so while it certainly helps, it won't vault you over a bunch of teams that are currently ahead of you IMO. It would depend on what happens with a bunch of other teams.

Our defense is able to do just barely enough to get us a win this last week and it is a major problem if you ask me and what is gonna keep us from being a top 25 team. I hope things can get better but I don't know if that win would pushus in or not...but I don't think we are even with that win.

But, there are a lot of teams that probably are not Top 25 and are in right now as well so who knows.

You can be in the Top 15 early in the year without proving much, but not after an asskicking like that. We did get in the bottom of the poll when we won, but then lost again (to a good team - Weber) and dropped off. I think your argument is reasonable, but couldn't justify ranking a team with only 1 win so MSU dropped off my poll. If they are as good as I hope, they'll get back on. They had a tough early schedule and are young. I think they'll improve. There's enough time left in the season.

Same could be said the other way around. Don't be lazy and slot vote. It's not that hard. If you can back up why you vote the way you do and are consistent in the judgement, people will be willing to be more likely to accept it. Who is claiming moral victories? Not every team can be undefeated. They lost by single digits to #9 and and #13. Their other loss is an FBS opponent. They beat their other FCS opponent by 28. What about them makes them so terrible to you? If they lose to Portland State they are out. If they win they sry about the same and move onto their game against Eastern Washington. It's a poll of the best 25 teams with moving pieces. Polls don't start to stabilize for another week or two.

You completely missed the point of the argument.

So based off the following stats, who would deserve a higher spot in your opinion. This is from 2016

Team A:

-8-3 regular season
-2 Top 25 wins
-1 FBS loss (team ended up with a winning record)
-2 losses to top 10 teams were both on the road
-Team went unranked into the playoffs

Team B:

-10-1 regular season
-1 Top 5
-1 Top 25 win
-1 FBS loss (team ended up with a winning record)
-Team went ranked into the playoffs

Now, based off your algorithm, team B would have the higher seed and ranking due to slot voting and record. What if I told you Team B could not win their 1st game and Team A went on to playing for a championship?

Telling me what teams A and B eventually did in the future isn’t important when I’m ranking them today. Today, team B looks better, assuming their conferences were comparable.
Seeds get upset in the 2nd round every year, usually at least one. That doesn’t mean team A is more deserving of the higher ranking today. Team A needs to win first.

If I look at both of those teams, both teams would be right against each other due to MVFC vs SoCon and looking at extenuating circumstances. Wells was injured Davis had to step in. Davis was not a solid QB and once they put Wells in, they plowed their way through the season and playoffs with only losing to NDSU and JMU.

This year, I have no idea what is going on, but as usual, Pelini finds a way to win and he will continue a trend he started at Nebraska and now at YSU.

Well here’s some of your logic right back at you.

If on the opening drive Goedert doesn’t fumble being overaggressive on their six. Then YSU doesn’t have the opportunity to completely grab all the momentum with their TD. Then it’s a 7-7 game and SDSU goes up 14-7 after their next touchdown, possibly forcing YSU to throw more and not try to hang onto the ball as much, giving the Jacks offense more time with the ball. Then SDSU could have won by a couple touchdowns.

You know, if we’re ranking off of ifs and buts instead of reality. Reality is you got stomped by a team that I didn’t even have ranked. A team that lost to ETSU. SDSU lost to a team most had in their top 10. A team whose only loss was to a FBS team in a fairly close game. You’re just whining like a bitch.

You are honestly not seeing why people voted for The Citadel so low. I will let you in on a secret. 2 Top 5 teams played and SDSU lost on the road. Sure they got stomped, but the difference is that, Samford, was a fringe 25 team whereas YSU just solidified themselves as a top 5 team and SDSU is anywhere from 10-15 right now. The Citadel did not show up and had a tough time with ETSU! ETSU!

YSU: 72/4/12
SDSU: 87/8/36
Samford: 117/17/20
The Citadel: 126/24/85

(Sagarin/Massey/SOS)

Please, tell me how dropping SDSU further than The Citadel makes sense?

Do not understand McNeese over Nicholls at all. So Nicholls' win was at home...they still won. When both inevitably finish 9-2, I wonder who's getting the 2nd SLC at-large...probably the H2H winner! Only difference in my T25.

I have Albany much higher since both they and obviously Elon should be ahead of VU...Richmond will decide if I keep them there.

I disagree with the placement of a few teams but opinions are what they are. It is hard to see all teams through unbiased eyes. I know I cannot.

The best thing about this poll is that we can all question each other's poll. This is what makes us all better pollsters and makes this the best poll out there.

That’s my entire point!

Herein lies the problem.

Only in the MVFC can anyone get whipped like SDSU did and the final score be 19-7.

Citdog.. I look at this was. YSU controlled clock for 45 of 60 mins and still only scored 19 points. They executed a perfect game plan and won by just 12. Their 1st drive was 16 plays for 94 yards and chewed up nearly 9 mins of play clock. Agree it seems like glld teams are figuring out how to contain SDSU but that doesn't make SDSU a weak team. Though they did reveal some weakness in their DL when they announced they planned to pull redshirts game 1 to shore up DL.. YSU took full advantage of situation. But again.. SDSU only lost by 12 having only had ball for 15 of 60 mins. They are still a very good team .. albeit not the dominant team many were thinking.

Might have something to do with the trouncing they took from SHSU as well. IMO their win in Thibodaux was a perfect storm that would not be repeated if the game was other than the first of the year. Regardless, it was a W for the Colonels.

Nicholls did not impress me that game. We essentially handed the game to them on a silver platter. I have said it and will say it again. If it wasn't the first game of the season, Nicholls doesn't win. Check all the stats of that game.

Still we screwed up and they won. Would love to play that game again. McNeese looks to be starting to jell.

You're probably right. It's the same reason why FBS teams deliberately choose scrub teams for their season openers. They're factoring in that their team is going to be rusty or shorthanded due to suspensions and want to ease their ways into real gameplay.

I was at that game, on the sidelines, and thought both teams were pretty evenly matched physically. Stats can be misleading due to circumstances in a particular game. As I recall, Nicholls ran less than 20 offensive plays in the first half and less than 50 plays the entire game. But they played good defense in the red zone and made good adjustments in the second half. Same two teams could have played the following week and the script could flip depending the flow of the game, turnovers, etc. ... the outcome would still likely be decided late in the 4th quarter.

I disagree, the stats pretty much told the story in that game. IMO play that game 10 times and McNeese wins 8 of them. BUT Nicholls did what they needed to win that game. I guess you will find out soon just how good they are in November but of course that is your last regular season game not the first on a Thursday night.
