SHERMAN HOLT, Asheville Erwin, LB, 6-0, 210 pounds — Has enrolled in classes at Appalachian and will participate in spring practice. Made 96 tackles, seven sacks and scored three defensive TDs last season. Brother of Appalachian’s John Holt.

MATT REYES, Fort Myers (Fla.) Cypress Lake, DE, 6-4, 215 pounds — Led Cypress Lake with five sacks, 18 quarterback pressures and 18 tackles for losses last season and was second in tackles on a Class 4-A team that finished 6-4. Considered Navy, Air Force, Florida Atlantic and Central Florida.

DARRYL SMITH, Charlotte Independence, LB, 6-0, 215-pounds – Unranked by either Scout.com or Rivals.com. A three-year starter at linebacker for perennial national 4-A power. Had 135 tackles, four sacks and five forced fumbles last season. Named to The Charlotte Observer’s All-Mecklenburg second team. Named to NCPreps.com 4-A All-State team. Defensive MVP of state championship game.

BRANDON THOMPSON, Kingsport (Tenn.) Dobyns Bennett, LB, 6-2˝, 218 pounds — Had 85 tackles in nine games, including 10 tackles for losses and four sacks last season, and played on three straight Class 5-A playoff teams. Considered Eastern Kentucky and Tennessee-Martin.

BOBBY BOZZO, Waldwick (N.J.), OLB, 6-2, 246 pounds — Visited Appalachian 1/13/07. Getting recruiting interest from Fordham, Massachusetts, Albany, Monmouth, Stony Brook, Towson and Appalachian.

Mark LeGree, a 6-1, 185-pound defensive back from Columbus, Ga., has committed to play football at Appalachian State, according to his high-school coach. LeGree started at safety as a junior and at cornerback as a senior for Pacelli High School, which finished 8-5 last season. He had 52 tackles, seven interceptions and 12 pass breakups as a senior and was a Class 1-A all-state selection by The Associated Press in Georgia. He also played wide receiver and caught 42 passes for 871 yards and 11 touchdowns.

tight end Ben Jordan of Charlotte Latin. Jordan (6-3, 235) had 46 catches for 760 yards and 12 touchdowns last season for Latin, which won an NCISAA state title.

defensive end Jabari Fletcher of Grady High School in Atlanta, Ga. Fletcher (6-3, 225) had 45 tackles and 13 sacks for Grady, a Class AAA team that was 10-3 last season.

Defensive tackle Jason Jones of Victory Christian in Charlotte. Jones (6-3, 235) had 75 tackles and 15 sacks for Victory Christian, which was 8-4 and made it to the NCISSA state semifinals. Jones, a Shrine Bowl player,

GORDON WITTE (6-6, 285) from Salisbury HS has committed to play football at ASU. He's a multi-sport athlete (football, track, wrestling) who is perhaps most noted for his wrestling accolades. Central Carolina Conference heavyweight champ, Mid-East Regional Champ, and NC 1-A/2-A State Champ in the 275 lb class. Is like 50-4 in his career on the mat. Ranked #22 in the nation in the 275 lb class by Wrestling USA.com.
