View Full Version : SLC Pick'em: Week 5

BEAR
September 25th, 2016, 05:34 PM
Last weeks results:

SFA 41 ACU 30
McNeese 42 UIW 35
SLU 34 NWST 24
SHSU 52 HBU 16
S. Alabama 41 Nicholls 40 (OT)
UCA 28 Ark. State 23

Moving on up: SFA has proven its toughness.
Just strong: Sammy keeps rolling.
One play at a time: UCA has a stout run defense and the offense is starting to click.
So close: Nicholls appears to be the real deal.

This weeks games:

UCA at ACU
SHSU at SFA
HBU at W. Kentucky
Nicholls at McNeese
UIW at Texas State
SLU at Lamar

ACU is struggling to the surprise of many SLC observers. UCA by 14. ACU QB is slinging it! Might keep them in the game.
Sammy and SFA in the BOTPW....anything can happen. I'm a lumberjack fan this week. +3
Nicholls in the hole vs FBS...but maybe not against McNeese. Nicholls by 7.
HBU keeps its nonwinning ways. WKU by 35.
UIW in the upset!
Kade has a field trip to his best run game this year. Lamar by 14.

I think your SHSU spread is too high, for either side. It's going to be a 7 point game either way.

I agree with that. That game is probably rarely a complete blowout either way.

I agree with that. That game is probably rarely a complete blowout either way.

The biggest margin of victory is 42-3, SFA winning in 2009. Last year I think the margin was 14, but it is usually a touchdown or less.

We'll see, I watched the McNeese game and wasn't overly impressed, but anything can happen in football. Last year we had to have to punt returns for a td to win.

I think we learn a lot this week about the conf between this game and the Nichols Vz McNeese game.

To be fair, I've watched your games vs Lamar and HBU and can safely say the same. While your D-Line is great, your secondary is suspect.

If Taylor starts, I think he shreds them.

SHSU at SFA - SHSU by 5...homer pick. I am not really comfortable with this prediction.
HBU at W. Kentucky - W. Kentucky as much as they want. I will say 35.
Nicholls at McNeese-Upset special. If it happens, I will no longer complain about the Lake Charles sandbagging..Nicholls by 3.
UIW at Texas State - Texas State is mad because of the beating UH gave them. Tex. State by 24.
SLU at Lamar - Can't really get a handle on either one of these teams, so I'll take the home team...Lamar by 9.

For the record, Nicholls has played only one FCS opponent and put up 500 yards and 28 offensive points (35 total). For comparison, against the same FCS opponent, McNeese had 370 yards of total offense and 28 offensive points (42 total). All games aren't the same, and circumstances play out differently, but Nicholls is capable of doing enough offensively to complement what has proven to be a very good FCS defense early in the season. The construct of their schedule doesn't do them any favors but they are a legitimate threat from what I've seen.

I am interested to see how this season in the league plays out. I'm not sure who really are the best teams. I think everyone has some strengths and weaknesses. Right now I'm going on record and schedule I would say UCA. The Samford loss at home is the only that hurts them. But not much Samford might be good even with Chattanooga loss. We will know a lot more in 2 weeks. Heck we will know a lot Sunday morning.

Nicholls...are they that good?

SFA.... winning.

Sammy....just keeps winning.

McNeese..looks down but some matchups bring out the best even in teams that appear to be down.

Thanks for your insight but I actually watch film and break down games. In hindsight something for you to think about, you were blown out by Texas tech a team that we competed with very well and put up over 600 yards offense last year. And we are much better this year! Our Lines are very good. As I've said, our secondary is our weak point and we were beaten quite often in the game but neither qb had the opportunity to throw comfortably to them. I actually think you will have a tough time with Lamar but I think you can stack the box and make them throw and you will have the advantage. Your wideouts are big and physical Conque just doesn't have a qb to tak advantage of it against a good team. Good luck with the rest of your season

It's a race to remain undefeated til the last game of the season.

Sammy has an easier path...

Games to win until the playoffs: 4/6

I would have said that UCA had a brutal stretch to end conference play with SFA, Nicholls, and Sam....

then today happened

Setting up for a really big game, but there's a lot of games to be played first.

I doubt UCA is going to go through clean. Sam on the other hand, chances are good.

There is no doubt! I dont see UCA comng through it cleanly either. But even so, one loss going into it and the Bears can play spoiler. xlolx

After yesterdays games.......

SHSU offense is the real deal. 632yds and 63 points...xnodx What I dont understand is how did SFA beat McNeese? SFA looked slow to me.

UCA is a serious contender and McNeese flexed their muscles yesterday to show they are still a conference contender as well.

Everybody else in SLC..... meh!! ACU has taken a dive as well as NW St. Remainder of the conference is average at best.

I think SHSU has a great chance to run the table , but must get by McNeese and UCA. As long as they stay focused and the defense continues to improve, SHSU will make another deep run in the playoffs.

McNeese has still not completely defined itself on either side of the ball. The running game has been less than adequate with the young offensive line but the passing attack is starting to look like the best ever. As the season goes on things should improve (like everyone usually does). If they cut down on critical mistakes (cost them both losses this year), develop a running game to keep D's honest, and the defense continues to improve who knows. If they do not step up, there are at least 2 more conference losses in their future.

Nicholls just doesn't win at The Hole. Wish I could have been there/watched. Had a wedding to attend.
