I was reading about the upcoming EWU-NDSU game and went down a rabbit hole of articles about their famous 2010 playoff game, which got me thinking: what is the best FCS game you've seen in person? For me, it's two losses. 2008 vs JMU (the Scotty McGee game--i work out with Mike Ireland, who started at safety for this team, and he says they still randomly will text the punter crap like "YOU WERE TOLD TO KICK IT OUT OF BOUNDS") and 2009 playoffs against App St (star linebacker, Eric McBride, ripped a punt return right out of App's punt returner's hands and took it in for what looked to be the game winner until Armanti Edwards did Armanti Edwards things). Yeah we lost, but when I think of best games I've witnessed, those always come to mind too. Also, I guess that game in Chattanooga against Montana wasn't too bad...

Interested to hear y'all's input, especially CAA fans. Is my east coast bias showing?

A ton of Bison ones for me.

One of my favorites is down at TCF stadium when the Bison beat the Gophers in '12. The Bison had probably 20% of the fans and out cheered the Gopher faithful.

Wow. UNI-Idaho #1 vs #2 in the early 90s.

2005, 2007, and 2008 playoff games against UNH.

Probably a ton I'm leaving out.

Georgia Southern @ Furman in 2004. Late in the season. Eagles came in ranked #2 and Furman #3 I think. Attendance in excess of 17,000 in Greenville.

GSU was averaging nearly 50 points and 500 yards of offense per game. They had been steamrolling everyone. Furman scored a late TD with about a minute left, notched the two point conversion, and then batted down Georgia Southern's final attempt in the end zone as time expired.

1998 Magic City Classic(Alabama State vs. Alabama A&M) Alabama A&M came into the game with a surprising 4-3 record in their first year in the SWAC and we were only 2-5. We were on a 7 year win streak and all signs pointed to that coming to an end. Alabama A&M had a 28-0 lead heading into the 4th quarter when the Darnell Kennedy show took over. We score two touchdowns in the opening 90 seconds of the 4th quarter. We went on to score 28 unanswered points in the 4 quarter including the tying 31- yard touchdown pass with 13 seconds on the clock. We forced OT, forced a fumble on A&Ms first possession and the very next play Kennedy hooked up with Michael Sanders for a beautiful 20 yard touchdown. Legion Field went absolutely bananas. It was LOUD as hell and I saw Alabama A&M fans literally crying in the stands. First Magic Classic as conference rivals before a record crowd of over 64,000. I was only a freshman in high school at the time but that game sold me on going to play at Bama State.

Right up until an interception on 2nd-and-goal from the 3 with 47 seconds left, Albany's 28-31 playoff loss at Stony Brook in 2011.

Otherwise likely the signature 17-10 win over the Delaware Flaccos in 2006. All the Bob Ford hallmarks - flea-flicker for a TD, quick kick 3rd-down punt, a game-saving INT, and 22,000 silent fans.

2009 McNeese vs App State at The Rock...

Somebody here asked me what I thought our chances were....I said that if the game turned into a track meet, I liked our chances to win it on the last possession.

What happened?

It turned into a track meet.

We won on the last possession...

I ran into GreatAppState in the bathroom....I was in there Washing my hands...he walked in, saw me in my McNeese gear, came over and we started chit chatting...asked me if I ever posted on AGS or on GeauxCowboys....when I said I did, he asked if I knew CBuck, Doc, McTailgator or FPC...;)

Plus it was a fun trip. Got to play in the mountains around Boone.

2014 UNH @ Richmond Back and forth all game. It seemed like the last team to have the ball with more than a few seconds left would win the game. UNH starting QB Sean Goldrich was injured on a go ahead TD dive with 10 mins left in the game. Richmond's next possession result in a TD and a 26-22 lead. But backup QB Andy Valais led UNH down the field in perhaps the most efficient drive of the day, burning up the remaining clock, resulting in a game winning TD and leaving Richmond too little time. (Of course the 2015 season saving upset of Richmond was pretty good to! The 2012 and 2012 two point victories were good too, but I was not at either of those.)

While I wasn't in the FargoDome for this, I helped create a NDSU/SDSU viewing party in Atlanta. Had a nice split of 15-20 fans each. Had Jackrabbit brats and Bison burgers. Both alumni associations helped get decorations and gifts. Oh, and getting to celebrate that first win in Fargo since 1963, priceless.

Hmm, could have been the 2nd GSU game. That was a hell of a semi-final and was the de facto NC game in 2012.

KU was a really fun game to be at as well. 6-3 but it had some epic tension. Also the Montana State playoff game in 2010 was really fun because of the events of the game and the bobcat fans attitudes around us. The two most recent minnesota games were great too.

NDSU vs SHSU in 2007 was epic too.

I did not attend the 3rd or 4th FCS NC games in person, so I can't put them on my list.

I remember that game well. Since that one, W&M ran off a streak of 25 or 26 consecutive wins over VMI which I believe is the current FCS record for an OOC win streak. I hated to see the series stopped and hope we will pick it up again. It's a good rivalry.

On best games, at least from W&M, the best one seen in person was probably the 1985 win over a highly ranked UR team, winning 28-17. Game holds the modern era attendance record at Zable, over 18,000, and the only time I can remember the students taking down the goal posts.

Second place tie would be the 1990 homecoming win, a 38-28 comeback against Furman, and the 2013 homecoming 17-7 win over JMU, sealed late in the 4th on a 90 yard INT return.

The Delaware series has featured many great games, probably the most of any Tribe opponent, though the best ones I did not see in person.

Regular season: 2013 Delaware @ Towson (GW TD and 2PT with :04 left after playing with backup QB and being down 21 in the 4th). Other candidates would be 2015 W&M @ UD (upset of eventual playoff team in last minute) and 2010 SDSU @ UD (going in SDSU was top 10 and it was a beat down).

Playoffs: 2010 Quarterfinals v UNH. Seemed to be a comfortable game throughout with some precip. in the December night.

Negative: 2009 Richmond @ Delaware (block kick prevents upset of #1), 2010 Villanova @ Delaware (furious comeback as #1 only to lose in OT and allow Nova to make playoffs), 2013 Richmond @ Delaware (Strauss throws for 500+, leads 40 second 80 yd drive to win), 2013 Delaware v Villanova (blowing 20+ lead)

Favorite FCS games...

1) JSU-Chattanooga 2010. Comeback from 17-0 down. Week after beating Ole Miss.

2) JSU-SEMO 2010. Another come from behind won against a good SEMO team.

3) JSU-Troy State 1996. A near win against the nationally ranked Trojans. Very bad JSU team that season.

Favorite FBS game...

JSU-Florida State 2009. Rainy, fun night in Tallahassee. One yard away from beating the Noles. First time JSU put a scare in a major FBS opponent.

Strictly FCS vs FCS matchups, my top few with apologies to many I leave out:
1) NDSU vs Sam Houston, 2007- Walker to Heckendorf wins the game with 7 seconds left;
2) NDSU vs UNI, 2011- #2 vs #3, the game that coined the phrase "Northern Iowa loud" as the Fargodome crowd noise standard for quite some time;
3) NDSU vs GaSo, 2012 playoff- A true classic, given talent on the field and what was at stake.

I have to include NDSU's first win over Minnesota in 2007 in the Metrodome--felt like a home game for NDSU that day.

My top FCS-FCS game ever was NDSU GSU in '12.

I'll also never forget the NDSU SHSU game in '07. It was my cousins wedding day, and between the ceremony and the reception my Dad and I went to watch the game. I remember when SHSU my Dad said "well we probably should get going" and I said some stupid corny line like "It's not over until Steve Walker says it's over." My Dad hasn't ever attempted to leave a game early since (and he never did before, either...that wedding must have really mattered or something!)

Insane.

FBS was the K-State game. I'll never forget how loud the Bison fans were when Brock scored the go-ahead...I remember stopping cheering for 5 seconds before hugging my Dad and just realizing that all the noise in that place was from NDSU fans. Just epic.

1) 2009 Holy Cross 28 Lafayette 26

In a driving rainstorm, HC overcame early deficits of 12-0 and 19-7 to clinch the PL championship in this winner-take-all game. A monster sack on 3rd and 15 by soph LB Jimmy Thomas sealed the game. Two mixed PATs in the first quarter by Davis Rodriguez (who was a phenomenal kicker) were the difference in the score.

2) 2008 Holy Cross 27 Lafayette 26

We won this game on a Hail Mary pass from Dominic Randolph to QB-turned-WR Rob Koster to keep our championship hopes alive for one more week.

3) 1996 William & Mary 10 Delaware 7 (OT)

First OT game in Tribe history. Brian Shallcross kicked a 42 yard FG in OT for the lead and then Ty Moody sealed the game with a pick (fourth of the day for W&M). Delaware had tied the game at 7 with under a minute to go in regulation IIRC. This game helped the Tribe win the Yankee and both teams advanced to the second round of the playoffs.

4) 2007 Holy Cross 31 Harvard 28

A 35 yard TD pass from Randolph to senior WR Tommy Harrison got us the win against the eventual Ivy champ Johnnies, who finished 9-1. They would go on to break our hearts the next year at Harvard Stadium under the lights, with a comeback of their own.

5) 2008 Colgate 28 Holy Cross 27

Colgate QB Greg Sullivan and RBs Jordan Scott & Nate Eachus, behind the PL's best O-line, wore us out in the second half in this winner-take-all PL Championship Game which was played in a snowstorm in Hamilton. We had opened up the game with two long, thrilling TD passes to Jon Brock and Bill Edger. 'Gate WR Pat Simonds had a phenomenal TD catch of his own.

6) Harvard 25 Holy Cross 24

Played under the lights in front of 22,000 at Harvard Stadium, this was a gut-wrenching loss for the Purple, who dominated the first 48 minutes of this game. A fumble at the Crimson goal line with a 17-6 lead early in the fourth was the beginning of the end.

1997 Northwester State...first playoff home game. Different kind of football. Faster, bigger hits, noticeable.

2002 Josh Blankenship and co ending the Griz winning streak at Albi. Something like 17,000 in attendance which is a record for an EWU homegame

2010 Montana game to inaugurate the red turf.

2010 Frisco...It REALLY sucked until 3:30 to go in the 3rd quarter. Obviously the programs biggest win but not as memorable to me personally as...

2010 Semi against Nova. It was right before Christmas, Taiwan was out, casting doubt on our ability to keep up with Sczur and the gang. The CAA was still the dominant conference other than App. We started the smoker early and it was a crystal clear day. Back then you could still have wood burning fires, and I remember walking up at sunset behind the upper parking lot with Polsongriz, Grizchick, and SE174 looking down on all these little campfires in the snow with the mountains of Idaho glowing pink in the distance. The crowd joined in a full chorus of "Rudolph" at the end of the 3rd quarter, and when BLM hit Greg Heard (?) off a play action on 4th and 1 late to go up 10, we all knew we were headed to Frisco. Magical.

2010...as mentioned in the OP the most entertaining roller coaster ride of a game I've ever seen. Taiwan goes off for 220 in the first half then gets knocked out of the game, followed by back to back kickoff returns for scores in the 3rd quarter, followed by the snow starting to fall, followed by a long draught of NDSU doing what they do to take the lead, followed by "the drive" and Nick Reynold's amazing catch on 4th down setting up the tying score, followed by "upon further review", and then snow angels. Amazing game. xnodx

Wow! So many good games to choose from.

So here are my best FCS games that I attended. By best I mean most entertaining not necessarily the biggest wins.

Regular season: The 2008 game at SDSU.
Playoff game: The 1997 playoff game with Montana in Cowboy Stadium

Now if you took off the FCS tag then these games would not be the two I would pick. It would be:

Regular season: The 1976 20-19 win over USL
Bowl game: The win over Tulsa in the Inaugural Independence Bowl in 1976

UMass @ Delaware November 15th 2003

Both teams came in with only one loss each in the season (UMass with one to Kansas State, Delaware had just dropped a road game we should have won vs Northeastern). While both teams were likely set for the playoffs, home field advantage was on the line.

The game was neck and neck, punch for punch, with some great plays on both sides, and a near capacity crowd of 21,800 at Delaware Stadium. The game went into 3OT rounds before Delaware finally stopped UMass on a broken 4th down pass to win the game.

The eventual NC game that year vs Colgate was fun in its own way, but it wasn't much of a contest, the UMass game was an edge-of-the-seat thriller.

The Lafayette sideline was advised by the officials that if the second OT ended tied, the game would have to be moved, to the nearby rugby field or practice field to be finished under the lights.

I attended that game, which was very dramatic - essentially finished in the dark.

Colgate 28 - Western Illinois 27
2003 I-AA Quarterfinals
Driving snowstorm all game long. TD run from Jamaal Branch in the final minute for the winning score. A pick of Russ Michna to seal the deal. Students rushing the field to tear down the goalpost. What a game.

Damn you, I'd nearly blacked that out of my memory. That one hurt...a lot.

As for my "best FCS games":

1. "The Kick" (11/18/2000) - #6 WIU @ #18 UNI, winner gets the conference championship. The game starts off fairly "back and forth", but we eventually build a pretty big lead (41-19) going into the 4th. UNI storms back with 3 TDs in the quarter to tie it up at 41 with 3 1/2 minutes left. Gets to the point where time is running out, we (WIU) have the ball and are able to get to around the 40 yard line. Our regular kicker is either injured or can't kick that far (can't remember which), so they decide to have our punter (who has never tried a FG in college before) line up and give it a shot. The snap is perfect, hold is perfect, and (future NFL punter) Mike Scifres nails a 56-yard FG to win the game and the conference championship. That kick is still tied for the longest in Leatherneck Football history and is tied for 6th in Gateway/MVFC history.
http://www.mvc.org/football/stats/02/wiu-uni.htm

2. "This is the game that never ends..." (8/30/2007) - SDSU @ WIU, season opener at Western, SDSU was still in the Great West conference at the time, but would be joining the MVFC (along with NDSU) the next season. A defensive battle throughout regulation that ends in a 13-13 tie (http://i.imgur.com/03Om4dG.jpg). Going to overtime, scores are traded back and forth (eventually totaling more points than were scored in the entire first 4 quarters) through 3 OTs, when finally in the 4th overtime period, Western gets a FG and then intercepts SDSU when it's there turn with the ball to win 29-26 and set off the fireworks (http://i.imgur.com/ITy4izJ.jpg?1). The 4 OT game is still the longest in MVFC history.

My list:
NDSU @ GaSo - 2006. Dominant ass-whooping by the Bison in the FCS legend's house

Coastal @ Furman - 2014. OT game that had OL FU having myocardial infarctions in the stands...he says he made out with the "husky" female paramedic but she was resuscitating him.

2011 Semis GaSo @ NDSU...sentimental as it was my 1st game to see back in Fargo since '99 & Lil' SB's first Bison game.

Top game:
*Lehigh 40 Towson 38, 2011 DI-AA/FCS playoffs R16 - this game was a back and forth, offensive-oriented affair that strangely enough was decided by a safety in the latter half of the 4th quarter.

Other games:
*New Hampshire 48 Lehigh 41 (OT), 2011
*Lehigh 51 Central Connecticut State 44 (2OT), 2013
*Villanova 29 Liberty 22, 2014 (DI-AA/FCS playoffs R16)
*Penn 26 Princeton 23 (OT), 2015 - it was a minor miracle that the Quakers even forced overtime in this game

Mine would be
2007 vs. SIU
2007 vs. UNH
2008 vs. UNH
2014 vs. NDSU (Really wasn't that great of a game, but such a big victory)

2007 SIU was a great one. Although 2005 SIU was probably better. Quite a few other SIU UNI games that were classics as well.

Funny enough, that game is simultaneously one of my most and least favorite games that I've ever attended.

Other notables:
2010 vs. Coastal - the infamous 5 OT game. It took forever, but we got the win (our lone win that season) and it was my first game as a student.
2011 vs. #20 Nova - Blowout, upset, and the debut of TWest.
2013 vs. Fordham - Nothing like seeing your team pick up their first D1 playoff win in program history.
2013 National Championship - We may have gotten blown out, but I got to see Towson in a national championship football game. If you would have told me during freshman year that we would make a natty before I graduated, I would have laughed right in your face.

Montana since 2002: 131-43 (.753) Can't be many FCS teams with a better record in that time-frame.

Best game I attended was NDSU v Valpo... yeah, it was a blow-out but:

1. It was the game the tailgating was not considered a felony, and it started an avalanche. This was against a background of anti-tailgating hysteria.
2. It was NDSU's first game of the DI era.
3. Record crowd despite just about every newspaper in the state having a hissy fit that NDSU dared to promote the game.

That was a SCREW YOU to the small-mindedness of North Dakota's "leadership" that could be read from the freaking moon and it was AWESOME.

Right..... When people think FCS one of the teams they think of is Montana.

^^ in my experience this is true. A lot of my buddies give me crap for caring about FCS football (ironically most are UVA or Tech fans), and just on Sunday one of them said to me "Doesn't Montana just kill everyone every year?" It may not be rooted in fact, but for some reason Montana stands out to people with only a passing knowledge of FCS.

Georgia Southern's 21-14 OT upset win in Statesboro against then-number 1 App State in 2010. GSU was down 14-0 after one quarter but tied it up in the third. GSU scored on a short run on its first OT possession, then recovered an ASU fumble to clinch it. The place went nuts.

Also saw a couple of great pre-FCS Harvard-Yale games, but that's fodder for another thread.

I think it has a lot to do with seeing the stadium on TV so much over the years.....people tend to remember WA-GRIZ with the mountains and all in the background....and just overall electric atmosphere.....

I had a buddy in school from Pittsburgh...I asked him how he ended up at Montana...he said he saw the 2009 seminfinals game on TV when App State came to WA-GRIZ and said it "looked like a cool place"....so he came hahahahahaha

I'll add one more:
2009 vs W&M: low-scoring slugfest, both teams ranked in the top-5. Tribe were driving to win the game with like 30 sec left, when star CB Justin Rogers (IIRC) came up with a pick. Eric Ward moved us to the very edge of FG range and Andrew Howard, who had missed a 35-year game winner against Nova the week before (which we lost on a goddamn 4th down hail mary), drilled a 50-yarder. That's as excited as I've been at a Spider game.

Matt,

You've covered most of them in this thread. Most of Richmond's "best" home games were close losses against top ranked teams. And they all had a LATE score by the opponent in that same @#$@ end zone.
-Scotty McGee punt return
-Villanova 4th and long - 'Nova went on to win the NC with a one seed because of that game
-App St. playoff game

Of course when we beat W&M on that FG to end 2009, we were driving towards that end zone.

Two victories in Harrisonburg are high on my list: Last year after ESPN College Game Day (it was a great game).
Back in the mid 90's we went to JMU and won some crazy game by one point. JMU was ranked at the time and we were down by 3 TDs and getting heckled mercilessly. My memory is a little hazy - it was 20 years ago and there may have been some alcohol consumed. :)

If we're talking most fun game, then it's the 2009 Playoff "Snow Game" against UNH

If we're talking instant classic:
#1) 2013: Delaware 34 Nova 35.
Down 34-12 in the 4th quarter, Cats score 23 unanswered to win the game. 2 TD from Robertson to Joe Price, a rushing TD from Gary Underwood, a successful onside kick, and a GW field goal from Hamilton all in the span of 8 minutes.

#2) 2009 Semifinals: W&M 10 Villanova 14
William and Mary strikes first with a 98 yard passing TD. Szczur fake punt in the 3rd quarter jump starts the Nova offense, leading them back from down 10-0, and sending them to their first NC game.

#3) 2014: Villanova 35 W&M 31
One of those games of "whoever has the ball last will win". Neither team led by more than a touchdown. Robertson leads a 7 play, 69 yard GW touchdown drive in :59 to take the lead with 0:52 to play. W&M gets down to the Nova 32, but runs out of time. Robertson finishes 20/32 267 2TD and 17/68/TD on the ground in a game that is the corner stone of his Payton run.

Best Nova Losses:
2008 Quaterfinals: Villanova 27 JMU 31
Neither side leads by more than a TD. JMU takes the lead for good with 5 minutes to play after getting good field position after a questionable unsportsmanlike conduct. Chris Whitney picked off at midfield to seal the win for the Dukes.

2000 Villanova 42 Delaware 59
Delaware rallies from down 25 and outscores Nova 42-7 in the 2nd half to win. Matt Nagy passed for 456 yd and 3TD while Brett Gordon had 424 and 4TD.

I wouldn't say this was the best game, per se, but one of the best individual performances I can recall: Yale v. Harvard in 1999 when Eric Johnson made 21 catches to lead Yale to a come-from-behind win. What a stud.

Villanova v. Holy Cross in the 2009 playoffs was very memorable. The end of an era for HC football as this was Dom Randolph's last game; he went out in style having one of the best games of his storied career. If not for a BS non-fumble call against 'Nova, this game could have been different...still ticks me off to this day!

Probably UNDs most exciting win was against a ranked South Dakota with the Great West title on the line in Grand Forks. We got down big but made a huge comeback in the fourth and won by forcing a fumble on a kickoff return and a few plays later we got a great TD catch in the back of the end zone. The unfortunate side to this was it secured a contract extension for our coach and he followed it up with two losing seasons featuring one of the worst defenses the FCS has ever seen.

I don't know if it's possible to top the championship game with NDSU vs. Ill. State. I was at the 2010 playoff game at Eastern Washington. Hard to call that a good game when the officials called a personal foul on the wrong team in one of the worst calls ever.

The non-fumble was a game changer indeed. The other killer that day was a 45-yd jump ball that was hauled in by Matt Szczur late in the third quarter to put Nova in the red zone and set up a TD that brought the lead to 35-21. Offensive pass interference could have been called on that play (not that it was necessarily a bad no-call, just that the flag COULD have been thrown and brought up a third-and-long).

Wish I could include you on it, but I was either taking the SATs or visiting a school that day when we played you. Something college application related I know. My dad went down by himself and to this day still raves about the game (of course), the stadium, and the people.

Got or asses kicked that game, but I'm glad your dad enjoyed the experience. xnodx

I think it was 2008 Hobo Day game vs McNeese. We lost but that game was insane

That was a great game and probably my favorite.

Runner ups would include:

2009 App State in Boone and the 2007 Playoff game at Delaware.

BEST: Illinois State vs. NDSU - FCS National Championship. Hands down.

Holy Cross 43, Lehigh 42, 1991. One of the greatest football games I have ever seen.

This was mine too - even with the loss. I actually have this game on DVD, but it's of poor quality.

The game was something like 7-7 at halftime and a friend told me that ESPN was constantly cutting away to show the back-and-forth of this game.

Id say UNH and Chattanooga in 2014 was my favorite. Just an awesome crowd, some crazy plays, and the big W.

The semifinal against Illinois State that year was great too, and even though we lost i felt proud that day.

I remember the UNI game back in 2005 being insane, despite the loss as well.

I can still see the McNeese tight end, wide open and dropping the pass in the endzone in my nightmares xconfusedx

I'd say the best was our first (only) playoff win over Sam Houston in 2013. The win over Sam a couple of weeks earlier to clinch SLC tie was pretty special too.

Most entertaining game was in San Marcos at Texas State in 2009. We were down 24 points with about 8 minutes to play in the game. Came back to score 24 unanswered (no turnovers or returns involved) to send it OT ... we win it on a missed extra point off the right upright, 51-50.

51-17 win over McNeese in 2004 (our second year back after not having football for 18 years, and first win over an SLC program since the return) is up there as well.

I get it. The griz won championships when the FCS wasn't watered down. When men were men and women and children knew their place.

NDSU has an awesome program and that's nothing new And IAA included many teams who (as many here point out) occupy the bottom of FBS: Boise St, Nevada, Middle Tenn, Marshall, Idaho, UMass, Arkansas St, W Kentucky, Ga Southern, App St, ULM were all regular playoff contenders and NC winners. Start-ups who left are Central Florida, South Florida, Old Dominion, Coastal Carolina, FIU, FAU, Charlotte, South Alabama. Texas State was hot when they left. NDSU is virtually unaffected by those FBS transitions, but many FCS schools who recruit against those above aren't winning many recruiting battles. California, Texas, Florida, and Georgia are recruiting battlegrounds and in the era of internet videos recruiting is way more competitive than it was just 10-15 years ago. NDSU gets talent from all over and really recruits the UMW well. I have no doubt NDSU would compete for most any G5 conference title, but the Bison are Jaws in a goldfish pond right now.

1999 YSU vs FAMU. Unbelievable game. ySU down by19 in Q4. Come back and win it. More than half the stadium left. Couldn't get back into the game.

App State at Montana in 2009, followed closely by the NDSU at Montana last year.

For me it was easily the Illinois State vs NDSU championship game. Back and forth game with playmakers on each side making big plays

That one is up there, but for me it would be UNI hosting Georgia Southern in the Dome for playoffs in '85:

For the old-timers here on AGS, take notice of that huge left offensive tackle wearing No. 74 for the UNI Panthers. The one and only Cap'n Cat from AGS. Has any team been in two better back-to-back games than the Georgia Southern semifinal win over Northern Iowa and championship win against Furman (best FCS title game in history)? The only thing close to that for me were the Appalachian State games against Richmond in the quarterfinals and Montana in the semifinals in 2009.

It's probably hard for the younger folks to grasp that Georgia Southern College was in its second year of NCAA eligibility after 40+ years of no football. How do you build a winner that fast? Even crazier, how do you then go on to appear in 5 of 6 NC games '85-'90 and win 4? Again, that's 5 appearances and 4 rings in the first 7 years of eligibility after 2 years of club football. ODU had a great start, but it doesn't come close.

The infamous Lehigh/Holy Cross game in the early 90's that was 6-6 at the half and ended up 45-44 for the Crusaders, though the Lehigh/Lafayette game of 1988 with the Klingerman catch in the gloamin' to cap a tremendous comeback to win 37-30 in 2 OT, after trailing 30-14 with 10 minutes to go in the game.

The Lafayette sideline was advised by the officials that if the second OT ended tied, the game would have to be moved, to the nearby rugby field or practice field to be finished under the lights.

Thanks. Can't watch that enough!!

I thought that was 1995. I even remember watching the end of this game, even though I wasn't following Division I-AA football at the time.

Truly a game for the ages. Both teams played at peak performance.

Even the defenses?

For the first half, yes, which ended 7-7.
