WWE Raw and Spongue Bob are ranked among the top cable shows weekly. Raw was in fact the top cable show on television (or WCW Nitro) for a very good period of time...

For this to be the crowning moment of the highest of all high, the alpha the omega, the MECCA of NCAA football championship that the NCAA has to offer, how does the product receive a .5 rating in the nation's largest market?

Look man, I'm not trying to start no rant about the typical "SWAC vs the World" bull**** that goes on here because that was not my intention. Furthermore, I don't have to go any further than I originally stated but to appease Mr. Owner there you have it.

A 0.5 rating in New York should not be unexpected. After all, how many I-AA fans are there in New York City. How many New York residents can correctly guess which state Appalachian is in? Hopefully they can guess better with UMass.:D

FCS football (just like the Sunbelt, MAC, C-USA) does not have a large national following. I suspect the game was watched by

1) ASU and UMass fans
2) Scattered AGS'ers and other FCS fans
3) People willing to watch any football game

These are not large audiences.

Does anyone know how the FCS championship compares to the D2 championship? Many years, the D2 championship played on a Saturday afternoon draws as big an audience as the I-AA Championship played on a high school Friday night.

You forgot some people: NC State fans, UNC fans, Duke fans, WCU fans, etc, since App, Wake, NCCU, and ECU were the only North Carolina teams to play postseason. Many fans of bad NC teams became App fans. Probably the same for Mass. people, but to a lesser degree (since there are fewer football-playing schools in Mass).

I gotta agree here. a 0.5 in New York (whether the City or the whole State) would be good. If there was only a 0.5 in North Carolina or in Mass. Then I would be worried. I don't expect much out of NY for that Championship game. Now Boston or Charlotte, I would expect more.

It's okay. I've never been farther west than Atlanta.:bawling: But NC is nice from mountains to coast...well, the middle isn't that great if you ask me, I grew up there. But the mountains and coast are the best. Especially the mountains. Visit Boone, Asheville, and the Blue Ridge Parkway (longest park in the US, prettiest roadway I've ever seen).

Nothing in Iowa sticks out. It's all flat.

Places to visit:
Dubuque- Casino, Riverboat Cruise, Fenton Elevator Square, Mississippi River Museum, Indoor Water Park
Dyersville- ERTL toy factory, Field of Dreams
Waterloo/Cedar Falls- UNI, um......a couple of museums...nothing grand.
Cedar Rapids- Science Museum/IMAX
Des Moines- State Capitol, some museums, 50s diner called Stella's (always on my list).

I'm sure there's more I'm missing.

I haven't found an excuse to go to NC yet. A playoff game would be a good one, but I don't know if I want to be a fan of the visiting team at the Rock. I want to see the Rock, but maybe not under that circumstance. :D

Hmm, well I would visit some of the campuses for sure. Maybe Des Moines... So you're saying that Iowa isn't the most exciting state? That's what I'm getting.

Here's a list for NC:
Raleigh - Catch a Carolina Hurricanes or NC State Game, visit my house. We have a nice historic district/Capitol area.
Chapel Hill - Visit UNC's campus. Very nice small town. Great music scene.
Greensboro, Charlotte, Winston-Salem - I don't care too much about these places, but if you like big cities, go to these or Raleigh. All of those metro areas except Winston have over 1 million people. Yuck!
Boone - Visit ASU's campus. Visit the Blue Ridge Parkway (awesome scenic drive through the mountains, huge trailers and such not allowed).
Asheville - Biltmore Estate (huge mansion), awesome atmosphere. It's like a big Boone. Very eclectic.
Outer Banks - The beach. Most are too crowded for my taste in summer, but give it a shot. Visit the lighthouses all along the coast. We have 7, including the tallest in the country, Cape Hatteras Lighthouse.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Carolina

NC has many nice things to offer, but my personal favorite is the mountains. Come to the Boone area in autumn sometime. You won't regret it.

Fact is ESPN gave the Motor City Bowl much more promo time than they did the FCS title game. Joe Schmoe Football Fan might have been more interested in watching the title game if he actually knew it was going to be on.

You can't tell me more people care about CMU vs. MTSU than ASU vs. UMass. Ditto for Troy vs. Rice. And SJSU vs. New Mexico. But the number of people that were aware of the date and time of the bowl games was exponentially higher.

ESPN gives all the smaller bowls (like the Motor City Bowl) because they actually pay to have the right to the game. However small the rights are, ESPN still shells out some cash to broadcast the games. Since they do this obviously they are going to market the game with promo's.

ESPN pays nothing for the 1-AA playoffs, even the Championship Game. Actually the NCAA has to pay for all the games to be on ESPN. Not for sure the amount, but the NCAA does give ESPN money to put playoff games on TV. Since ESPN has no stake in the game, they aren't going to spend the time, effort, money to make promo's.

Basically the reason they don't is they don't give a crap about 1-AA football.

FlyBoy8
December 28th, 2006, 10:43 PM
Zone - All I said was that more people would watch if it was advertised as much as the bowl games are and people were given reasons to watch. I don't know what there is to argue about that.

It's not going to get killer ratings no matter what you do. That doesn't mean they couldn't be higher.

Roller - I know, and I don't expect ESPN to ever get behind the game.

If I recall correctly, I think the NCAA pays for the semifinals and earlier round games to be aired, and ESPN either pays or airs for free the championship.
