Damn right. It's an important position that is often overlooked by casual fans.

Back in my days as a video coordinator with my college team, when I didn't have to film any positions, I was supposed to help with the long snapper. Consisted of me being 15 yards behind him and having him snap the ball to me. The player was a bit odd. He loved Victor Hugo poetry and would often recite lines by Hugo during practices and games, sometimes just out of the blue.

SECOND TEAM
DEFENSE
DB - Tremon Smith, junior, 6-0, 185, Central Arkansas

I went to practice yesterday. This kid will be first team by the end of the year. 3 pass breakups and two INTS (one ripped away from a 6'7" WR). He paced the sidelines yelling "and they want to keep trying me! They want to keep trying MY side of the field!" I've never seen a DB have his head on a swivel as much as Tre and he times his jumps perfectly. But he had fire in his belly as they say. Wish the rest of the DBs had that !

I felt bad for the WRs because you want them to catch a few to give them confidence...xlolx

It's not the tall WRs teams need to worry about. It's the shorter ones on our team like Jatavious Wilson and Brandon Cox who both are about 5'9"...and phenomenal with receiving.
I know, I just don't think I've seen a 6-7 WR before. But that may just be because I don't pay attention. xdrunkyx

There are probably more out there than any of us can track. We had our first in 2004. Aaron Fairooz. Total beast.

Damn right. It's an important position that is often overlooked by casual fans.
Yup.

UNI fans don't notice ours because the last time there was a truly bad snap was..................I honestly don't remember. There was some debate about the 09 kerfuffle at Iowa potentially being snap related - though I don't think it was.

There may have been one or two that were a bit low or a bit high over the years but UNI has been very, very fortunate. It's one of the reasons, outside of the talent they've had, UNI has had the string of All Conference and All American kickers they've had. They have never had to worry about the snap, or the hold, being bad.

The best thing you can say about a long snapper is the best thing you can say about an umpire/referee. We don't know your name because we don't notice you're there. That means the job is being done well.

Damn right. It's an important position that is often overlooked by casual fans.
Ofcourse but how in the hell do you rank them?

I suppose if you have game tape of all of the teams you watch just the kicks/punts and figure out who had the least bad snaps?

Would only be a few minutes of tape per team for the season....if you had the tape just to just the kicks

Cal Poly had a 6'8 guy a while back. Moses was his name if I remember right.
Ramses Barden; he had a stint in the NFL.

Chase Allen is not one of the top 12 LB's in FCS? Your showing your ignorance man

I was surprised not to see Allen in their list. I have him on my 1st team.

We only have one so we are right there with you. We are obviously overrated as per usual.

I only had 1 in my top 3 teams as well. Problem is that you guys have a lot of All-MVFC caliber guys but only 1-2 who I could see on a preseason team. Between Bailey, Smith, Fountain, Schult, and Trent Simpson I think only 1-2 can be a for sure thing but I could see all of them and maybe a couple other surprise names on the postseason teams.

I go to the kicks myself and time the snap and look at the accuracy, technique, and velocity. I also move on if there is more than 1 bad snap in 3 games. I narrow down the list to about 6-7 guys pretty easily during the season.

The STATS people just flat dropped the ball not putting WCU RB Detrez Newsome on the list, then they doubled down and didnt' include him on the preseason Offensive POY watch list. He's one of to top All-purpose backs in the league and played against Tennessee and Texas A&M last year.

I'm up in the air on Newsome. He was impressive against A&M with over 100 yards but then shut down pretty good with just 39 against UTC. I don't have him on my POY watch list I posted and the issue with the All-America teams is that it is hard to put him in the top 6 with so many good names back.

If he can be more consistent then he will rise big time.

My question to you would be who do you remove in favor of Newsome? Have you seen all the other backs and can point to times when they clearly showed they aren't as good as Newsome?

It is very easy to say who should be on there but then when you have to pick who has to be removed you then find that 10 other people pop up and say wait a minute, you can't remove that guy.

Here is my list of the top RBs, by last name.

RB Kendell Anderson, William & Mary, Sr.- 202 carries, 1218 yards, 6.0avg, 13 TD, 110.7 yds/gm, 9 catches, 71 yards in 11 games.
RB Corey Avery, Sam Houston State, Jr.- 194 carries, 1483 yards, 7.6avg, 15 TD, 98.9 yds/gm, 15 catches, 214 yards, 14.3avg, 3 TD in 15 games.
RB Tarik Cohen, NC A&T, Sr.- 242 carries, 1248 yards, 5.2avg, 12 TD, 113.5 yds/gm, 23 catches, 164 yards in 11 games.
RB Derrick Craine, Chattanooga, Sr.- 230 carries, 1251 yards, 5.4avg, 13 TD, 96.2 yds/gm, 13 catches, 112 yards, 1 TD in 13 games.
RB Chase Edmonds, Fordham, Jr.- 251 carries, 1648 yards, 6.6avg, 20 TD, 149.4 yds/gm, 31 catches, 383 yards, 12.4avg, 5 TD in 12 games.
RB Kade Harrington, Lamar, Sr.- 266 carries, 2092 yards, 7.9avg, 21 TD, 190.2 yds/gm, 15 catches, 216 yards, 14.4avg, 2 TD in 11 games.
RB DeAngelo Henderson, Coastal Carolina, Sr.- 203 carries, 1245 yards, 6.1avg, 15 TD, 113.2 yds/gm, 37 catches, 343 yards, 2 TD in 11 games.
RB Detrez Newsome, Western Carolina, Jr.- 190 carries, 1109 yards, 5.8avg, 9 TD, 100.8 yds/gm, 37 catches, 281 yards, 3 TD in 11 games.
RB John Santiago, North Dakota, Soph.- 223 carries, 1459 yards, 6.5avg, 16 TD, 132.6 yds/gm, 5 catches, 81 yards in 11 games.
RB Leonard Tillery, Southern, - 197 carries, 1211 yards, 6.1avg, 14 TD, 110.1 yds/gm, 19 catches, 173 yards, 9.1avg, 1 TD in 11 games.
RB Darius Victor, Towson, Sr.- 207 carries, 1021 yards, 4.9avg, 15 TD, 92.8 yds/gm, 7 catches, 42 yards, 6.0avg in 11 games.

I think Henderson, Harrington, Edmonds, Craine, and Santiago have to be on the list somewhere. Then you have a ton of others like Tillery, Avery, Newsome, and Anderson who you could argue. This is a stacked group.

Hopefully Roc Thomas can crack the list at the end of the year. Pope left some big shoes to fill this year. But so did Demarcus James before Pope so hopefully the trend at Runningback can continue and Roc can fill Pope's shoes.

RB Kade Harrington, Lamar, Sr.- 266 carries, 2092 yards, 7.9avg, 21 TD, 190.2 yds/gm, 15 catches, 216 yards, 14.4avg, 2 TD in 11 games.

I'm not saying Craine shouldn't be on the list, but I am saying that Newsome had better rushing and receiving stats. I'm also saying that Fordam didn't play Tennessee or Texas A&M and Edmonds got something like 5 yards against UTC. It's all subjective though, and if your team gets to the post-season your best players will reap the individual rewards. I know that I have a bias towards my team. We had other guys with better stats than players who were put on this list, yet they too were left off. Hopefully, some of them, or others, will get some post-season recognition.

Avery is not going to be sharing as many snaps this year. He only rushed the ball 27% of the recorded rushes last season. I think people will be surprised by his stats now that the committee is smaller and he's the undisputed #1.

Harrington is a great back but I think Lamar is going to make him carry too much of the load.
