View Full Version : Indoor Practice Facilities

I remember about 8-9 years ago, this board used to buzz with discussions of indoor practice facilities and stadium expansions. Both seemed to have disappeared from dialogue with the departures of some of higher profile FCS schools up to FBS.

My alma mater has broken ground on a new indoor facility that should be finished around Q1 2017:

It has not generated much discussion in our Liberty circles since the announcement. That surprises me from one perspectove but leaves me wondering if FCS schools have become so focused on managing costs that infrastructure improvements aren't as sexy as they used ot be to fans.

Wow xbowx. No way you guys can lose now. I mean look at all the money you guys spend and how successful you have been in football. xlolx Money doesn't translate to wins, but I think you know that by now.

Dude. Really?

Liberty has seven conference championships. If that number sounds familiar, it should because that's the exact same number that Coastal has.
Liberty currently holds the all-time record against Coastal and has won the last two meetings, both of which came with Coastal ranked in the top 5.
Liberty and Coastal have both been to and won in the FCS playoffs within the last two seasons.

I don't think anyone would argue with the fact that Coastal has built a successful program but to say that Liberty hasn't also takes a very special level of hubris.

FWIW isn't much.
Liberty had also been playing football for 30+ years -- with the majority of that at the sub-D1 level and all of it woefully underfunded -- before Coastal fielded a team. If you want to talk about winning % in the same era, Liberty is at 58.3% and that's with several soul-crushing Karcher years thrown in.

Again, no one is arguing that Coastal doesn't have a successful program, particularly since Moglia came on board. But the idea that Liberty is so far behind is ridiculous on it's face.

They've had more money, better facilities, more fans, etc... For decades compared to their conference mates. Hasn't gotten them much it date.

Guess who has as many playoff appearances and playoff wins since 1989, when Liberty went D1?

Fordham also moved to Division 1 in 1989. They were D3 in 1988 before jumping up two classifications in order to join the PL. I'd say the Rams have outdone Liberty as well.....

I love it! You can't bring up the facts that Liberty spends tons of money, with high expectations and can't get anywhere. Everyone is expected to see them as national title contenders, but Liberty fans can poke fun at us for only having 10,000 fans at a game, when our stadium only seat 9,000.

Btw 6 playoff appearances in 13 years > 1 playoff appearance in 27 years.

I hate to contradict the AGS Expert on Everything but this bit is simply and completely untrue.

For much of its existence, Liberty had faced a crushing amount of debt and was nearly foreclosed on in 1993. LU didn't get out of the red until 2007 when the founder passed away having named the university as the beneficiary of a rather substantial life insurance policy. That event coupled with the rising national popularity in online education -- which Liberty was already doing -- along with sound strategic planning has made Liberty very blessed since then.

In line with the financial uptick, facilities and infrastructure at Liberty are only now beginning to catch up to what a university of its size should look like and that means, basically, rebuilding the entire campus. Until the football stadium renovation in 2010, Liberty had probably the 2nd- or 3rd-worst stadium in the Big South which is saying something and that something would not be good. The Vines Center was very nice for basketball and volleyball but there were no practice facilities for those sports until 2012. Until 2013, baseball had seats only on the first base side and was wedged in between the student cafeteria and a railroad track. Until 2014, the softball stadium was a fenced-off area of the intramural fields. I could go on.

As for fans, I can remember being at a cold and wet senior day in 2005 -- against Coastal, fittingly enough -- standing at the top of the bleachers and being able to count the people in the stadium by hand. That was normal. When the current AD arrived in 2006, he made a concerted effort and put a team in place to make LU games an event for the whole community and, given the current attendance stats, you could only say he's been successful.

The facts aren't on your side here but continue to bash LU all you want based on your own perceptions. Please. We consider it a sign of fear and your fear is delicious.

One more.

Missouri State has 2 playoff appearances since that time. Outside of those 2 playoff years - and none of them have come since 1990 - Missouri State has 6 seasons over .500 and none better than 7-4 (x) and 6-5 (x4)

When you get to within 2 games of .500 of the MVFC let me know, then I'll think about almost getting close to start feeling fear.

You're 4-12 against teams currently in the MVFC
0-2 vs Indiana State
1-1 vs Missouri State
0-1 vs Southern Illinois
0-2 vs Southern Illinois
3-6 vs Youngstown State
Average score of those games is 30-15
Actually, 2 of those three wins vs YSU were pre YSU joining the MVFC.

Meanwhile, UNI is 227-120-3.

Liberty had a 20 point loss to Indiana State in 2014. Indiana State finished 4-4 in conference play that year in 5th place.

I am a UNI fan. I speak from a UNI perspective. My perspective is going to come from a UNI angle.

Ask 95% of UNI fans who Liberty is and they couldn't tell you outside of "Didn't they lose to 3-8 SIU last year?"

You spoke to my perspective, so when I answer with my perspective how is that "making it all about me". I hadn't given "my perspective" about anything related to anyone "Being scared" - be it myself or UNI.

Since no one else is actually talking about or posting pics of indoor practice facilities, I'll add a few from a D3 school. The University of Dubuque built a similar facility to what App. State has back in 2013. These types of facilities will be next up in the D3 arms race. Those schools can sell the fact all of their sports teams can use the facility as well as get some use from intramurals for the entire student body.
