Howard football coach Ray Petty will not have his contract renewed, the school announced yesterday.
"After careful review and consideration, we have decided to progress to a different direction to position the university's team to the next level," Athletic Director Dwight Datcher said in a written statement released by the school.
The Bison finished this past season with a 5-6 overall record (4-4 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference). Petty, in his first stint as a head coach, went 25-30 during his five years at Howard. He led the Division I-AA team to its only two winning seasons in the last eight years, going 6-5 in 2002 and 2004.
