Whew. UMass finally cashes in after another great drive. 14-7. Wonderfully balanced offense by UMass so far, including 142 rushing yards from Baylark.

Those 10 non-points from the previous two drives are scaring me, though. Should be 24-7. And it's only a matter of time before Santos starts making some plays . . .

Pards Rule

Steve Baylark just could not be stoped today even with an 8 man front. Baylark riped UNH for 198 yards on 23 carries. An amazing 8.6 yards per carry.

Four UMass SRs seems to be all over the field with big plays. James Ihedigbo, Brad Anderson, Steve Baylark and Brandon London just did not want to end their careers this week.

Also what about Koegels 65 yard punt. Talk about changing field poss in a hurry.

I honestly think UMass is the better and more talented team, but UNH really could've won this game with better playcalling in the 2nd half.

Why did Chip Kelly just realize durign the last drive that the screen play would work? UMass was blitzing Santos the whole 2nd half! And that was just a bizarre play call on the 4th down. Why would you not run the ball when you only need 1/2 a yard?

That's 3 years in a row we lose in the quarterfinals!! Good god!! I wlll say that UMass is one helluva team and I think they have a decent chance to win the championship. They have a ton of talent on that squad, they just need to limit the turnovers and penalties.

That is an accomplishment, without a doubt. Last year was probably our best shot, given the #1 seed and home field. Having to go on the road for the entire playoffs would have been extremely difficult.

It will be interesting to see what 2007 brings. We'll have a good share of returning starters on both sides of the ball, so that bodes well. But I can't help but think that our window of opportunity is starting to close. Or maybe not. I'm still struggling with this loss.

Great effort by both teams. I don't think UMass-UNH should have been matched up this early. Congrats to the Wildcats for a great season.

Wow what an effort by Baylark. 198 yards 8.6 yards/carry.

Damn, I'm agreeing with umassfan.

The A-10 isn't done for anyone until the book is closed. Hopefully, with a UMass championship.

UMass has a heck of a talented team. But, if any UMass fans on this site know any of the team members, get them to watch the App-MSU game. App was the much better team, but they kept MSU in the game with stupid penalties (the 15 yard variety) and 3 first half turnovers. Head games almost cost ASU.

UMass fumble deep in UNH territory was silly and not caused by the defense. So was the interception (horrible throw lofted up for grabs across the middle). You won't survive that stuff in GrizzyWorld. And you will have to eliminate the stupid penalties.

If UMass plays to their potential, they can win it all.

Go A-10! :hurray:

Not to mention the Don Brown old school, cheap, football...like the THREE fake calf cramp injuries that all happened coincidentally in the middle of a UNH hurry-up-offense drives (only to have the player return 2 plays later!)...or the fact that the strategy to cover Ball today was to simply cheat. Proof that there were at least 2 pass interference calls against UMASS. The first when both of Ball's arms pinned behing his back as Santos hit him in the chest with a wide open field in front of him...the 2nd when Smalls was 1 on 1 with Ball, Santos led him down the sideline - only to have Smalls push Ball out of bounds. Watch the tape to see how many more you got away with. I won't mention the 5 yard facemask (vs. 15) when Kackert had his head jerked back from behind on a kickoff return with lane in front of him at the 50.

Congrats to UMASS. As good as advertised. Liam Coen may just be the most efficient QB in the FCS. UMASS defense gave up some rushing yards, but took the UNH passing game almost totally out of the equation today. However, officials apparently did have a role to play in a terrible spot on 3rd and 10 pass completion to David Ball to Rt sideline on the 5 yard line. Was a 1st down, but spotted at the 5 1/2 yard line leaving 4th and a foot or so. Why wasn't a measurement called for? Tough way to lose. UMASS, win it all and make UNH look good!

Deja vu is right. Same exact situation, same basic score (7 vs 8 pt deficit), 4th and goal, on the 4/6yrd, line, clock running out, Santos 1/2 sprint to left, and a HATCHELL (Jason this game, John last game) deflects a ball thrown on a direct line to receiver. They werent all over it but they did think it was a bad spot. It wasnt the only call they had issue with the refs. That one play did not change the outcome of the game like you stated though. You can never look at one play and say that caused a team to lose. What makes you so sure that UNH would have scored even with the first down? Even you cant be sure about that. So what are you going to say next... the fact that our long snapper went out injured cost UNH the game. If it werent for the backup snapper not snaping the ball out of our endzone and Koegel booting a 65 yard punt... UNH would have won... RIGHT?

that punt was huge. It reminded me how complete UMASS is...UNH finally stops them inside the 20, looking at great field position & then the great punt. Thats what wins championships. No doubt in my mind that UMASS wins it all. We always evaluate things in the context of A10 power...but I can't wait to see if Montana can stop the combo of Liam Coefficiency, Baylark, & # the size & talent of 81, 82, 83. The students were a bit rowdy, but it is a prime night for major college football. They were not as bad as you think..It was an awesome game. Does Cowell stadium even have a student seating section? All this whining about the refs by wildcat fans is detracting from the great effort they supplied on the road under the lights with a sold out McGuirk against an obviously superior team in UMass. The UMass D frustrated and shut down UNH pretty much all night and pitched a shutout in the 2d half, sacking Santos 6 times, containing Ball and only allowing UNH 1 big play early in the contest. While on the other side Baylark went for 213 total yds on UNH and Liam Coen led numerous sustained drives against the UNH D and threw for 231 yds and 2 TDs - Especially the big 31 yder to Brandon London for the UMass lead. If UNH wants to complain they should blame themselves - they had numerous opportunities but could not score any points after halftime. Don't blame the refs, be accountable, be good sportsmen and accept responsibility for the outcome. The teams are both good football teams they played twice this season and UMass won both games. Sweet Jesus... give the UMass players & coaches some credit.xcoffeex

They were not as bad as you think..

The UNH mascot had to sit out the second half because off all the (physical) harassment from UMass fans. The cheerleaders had obscene and lewd comments directed their way, and people spat at them. The band was booed loudly as they took the field at halftime (our being up 17-14 at the time probably didn't help) and a few more times during the performance. This was the rudest crowd I've ever experienced. Some negative cheering and smack talk is to be expected because of the rivalry and the fact that it's the playoffs, but these incidents crossed the line.

I agree - there are always idiots in every crowd including UNH but I can honestly say I have never seen this level of verbal abuse directed at a mascot, cheerleaders, and band. As adults we should not put up with this from the students and should say something when we see it. And do not add insult to injury by talking about good sportsmanlike conduct with 4 minutes to play in the game stating that swearing would not allowed - it was way too late at that point.

You should do a search of the threads after the UNH-UNI game last year.

Yes some of the students were drunk. They did boo the UNH band (Oh the horror), but that was right in front of me and numerous UMass fans yelled at the students to stop and show respect.

The same group of studentsstarted a "Santos sucks" chant and were promptly told to stop again by UMass fans.

Oh, I'm not saying that this is the only game that had negative fans, and I'm well aware of how bad UNH fans can be, too. I'm just saying it was pretty bad, and a lot of people who were there do think it was as bad as WildcatFan thought, and I'm one of them (and it has nothing to do with the outcome of the game). This is the worst crowd I've seen in 10 years of attending UNH football games. Maybe it's because it seemed to be spread out throughout the whole stadium. At least at UNH it's mostly confined to the student section.

And the riot police were there just in case people rushed the field. The fans weren't THAT bad, if that's what you mean.

Cgood-

I am assuming that you sat on the New Hampshire side..I will be the first to apoligize for any lude behavior of any Umass students. A few can spoil it..If there was a night game of this importance at UNH, you would have had the same behavior out of some of your students. College kids are college kids, anywhere in the country. Delaware fans use to pour beer on us as we entered the playing field, and they were not just students..I would rate Eastern Kentucky fans right up there as well, as they are just as bad.
There were a ton of students, and they ran out of seating on the home side and slid over to the New Hampshire side. As far as the band goes, I thought it was very gracious of our band director to allow the UNH band on the field, especially if you compare the calibur of bands. UNH's band was able to play in front of a huge crowd, which they will cheerish for the rest of their lives. They were not boo'd from the home side..Sounds like the mascot has rabbit ears, and I find it hard to believe with all the police and swat teams there that the mascot got ruffed up. A couple of Umass students tried to jump the fence at the end of the game, and I saw 3 incidents where the police rebuffed them with their clubs and shields. Some of the hardest hits of the game where from the police..I hope some of those police have some eligibililty and will come out for the team..
UNH put up a terrific fight, and it was the best college game I have seen all year. You should be proud of your team and I was very impressed with your fan support, especially with the "UNH" chants all game..

You should do a search of the threads after the UNH-UNI game last year.

Yes some of the students were drunk. They did boo the UNH band (Oh the horror), but that was right in front of me and numerous UMass fans yelled at the students to stop and show respect.

The same group of studentsstarted a "Santos sucks" chant and were promptly told to stop again by UMass fans.

cggoodwin apparently has never been a visiting fan at a UNH hockey game.

This is just sour grapes and detracts from all that UNH accomplished this year.

74, I think it is beyond sour grapes. There is an ongoing reality here. I wasn't going to say anything because it would sound like sour grapes. But since it was brought up, I'll comment. And yes, I acknowledge that UNH isn't pure as snow either. But that doesn't condone UMass behavior. And I've been to many UNH hockey games at the Mullins Center. All I'll say is that I wouldn't bring my nephew to those games until he reached a certain age.

BTW, I truly appreciate the attempts you mentioned to change some of the things that occurred in the stands. Frankly, a lot more needs to be done along those lines to change the culture in Amherst. I've been to multiple games at Delaware with 5K more people and 7 PM starts (lot more time to drink) and not observed anywhere near the same bad behavior as I've seen in Amherst over the years.

I'll close with two things:

1. Yesterday made me appreciate even more the wonderful experience at Hampton University last weekend.
2. UMass has a terrific football team which I acknowledge is the better team. Good luck down the road.

I personally apologize to any UNH fans that were offended. I love UMass football and don't want anything to cast it in a bad light.

UNH is my "backup team" as I live in the great Granite state.

But maybe some people are just too sensitive to be college sports fans. If you can't take some drunks booing your band, then maybe you should have a different hobby.

I have been to all the A10 stadiums and do not see much difference if any between fans bases. As I said, check the reactions of UNI fans to playing at UNH last year.

Good luck to the Wildcats and may every UMass-UNH game be a BIG game...
