I know there was another thread on this, but since that list was very incomplete, I figured I'd start a new one...

3 hours later and hundreds of clicks through the individiual team pages in the College Football Data Warehouse (http://www.cfbdatawarehouse.com), here it is, a complete list of all the playoff rematches that occcurred from 1978 through 2005.

There have been 37 rematches. The team that won in the regular season is 15-21. There was also one tie.

Games in italics are the ones where the losing regular season team won in the playoffs.

There were also 2 games where neither team's schedule was available in the data warehouse:

1981
SC State 26, Tenn State 25 (OT)

1986
Tenn St 32, Jackson St 23

If anyone knows whether these were rematches or not, I'd love to know...

That's good stuff. The edge for the regular season loser isn't as large as I thought it was. May have to revise some of my second round predictions!

It looks like Tennessee State/Jackson State 1986 was a rematch with Tennessee State winning both times while South Carolina State/Tennessee State was not a rematch.

Right now my "paste" function isn't working on this computer so I can't give you a direct link without typiing a bunch but you can go to www.michigan-football.com, scroll down until you see a link to all time I-AA records, and go from there.

Oh...just noticed this: In 1992 Northern Iowa won both games against McNeese.

Thanks for the catch of the error and the additional research. Reviewing the scores in the database confused me a bit (especially at the late hour I was doing it), but now that I realize there was a W/L column it made it a lot easier.

I went back through and caught one more mistake, plus updated for the 2 games John tracked down.

The revised stat is that the regular season winner is 18-19 in the rematch.

Nice work...you must have been working all afternoon and evening on this.

One interesting thing to note - the record has been pretty lopsided in favor of the regular season loser since the beggining of this decade. Before that, it was just the opposite. I guess this is just more evidence of the increasing amount of parity in the CS. In other words, there is a greater chance that the RS win had more to do with one team being better than the other team rather than decisions by coaching and the level of focus of the players.

I'm vindicated. I said the "beating the same team twice is hard" is bull****. :hurray: :hurray: Thank you kardplayer.
