CHARLESTON, Ill. – Eastern Illinois football reported for fall camp on Tuesday with the Panthers set to start practice for the 2015 season on Wednesday afternoon. Over the summer the Panthers added depth at several positions as head coach Kim Dameron (http://eiupanthers.com/coaches.aspx?rc=603) announced the addition of 12 transfers that will compete for EIU this season. The additions on the roster give the Panthers depth on both sides of the ball with seven offense and five defensive players.

EIU will open the season on Thursday, Sept. 3 at Western Illinois. After a Sept. 12 game at Northwestern, EIU opens its home season on Sept. 19 against Illinois State in the 104th playing of the Mid-America Classic. Season and single game tickets are now on sale by calling 217-581-2106 or online at www.eiupanthertickets.com (http://www.eiupanthertickets.com/)

Mack Weaver (http://eiupanthers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4674) and Jerron Seymour (http://eiupanthers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4671) both transferred from Vanderbilt University. Weaver is a 6'5" 255, tight end who was a two-year member of the Commodores program. Seymour graduated in May from Vanderbilt and has one year of eligibility remaining. The 5'7" running back led the team in rushing with 716 yards and 14 touchdowns in 2013. His production was limited last season due to injury.

The Panthers added a pair of transfers from Northern Illinois with the addition of Scott Taylor (http://eiupanthers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4649) and Jareem Fleming (http://eiupanthers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4648). Taylor is a 6'2", 274, offensive lineman that appeared in games each of the last two seasons for the Huskies. He will compete for a starting spot upfront after the Panthers lost three starters in that unit from last year. Fleming is a 5'11 linebacker that redshirted last season at NIU. He played his high school football at Morgan Park in Chicago where he earned All-Conference honors.

Kent State transfer James Brooks (http://eiupanthers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4675) is one of four incoming wide receivers that bring experience to the Panthers this fall. Brooks (5'9") was the team's top punt returner last season while hauling in 16 passes for 283 yards. He had one 100-yard game against Army. The Panthers added three junior college wide receivers in Andrew Gamble (http://eiupanthers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4661),Brandon Neverdon (http://eiupanthers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4666) and Isaiah Nelson (http://eiupanthers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4640). Gamble (6'2") played last season at Feather River College in California where he caught 51 passes for 1,019 yards and eight touchdowns. Neverdon (5'8") played last season at Hartnell College in California where he saw action as both a running back (302 yards) and wide receiver (21 catches, 295 yards). Nelson (6'0") played at LA Pierce College in California where he had 32 catches for 466 yards and two touchdowns.

The offensive transfers were rounded out by tight end Ben Odugbesan (http://eiupanthers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4667) (6'4", 215) who played at Nassau CC in New York last season helping the team post a 10-0 record while winning the Valley of the Sun NJCAA Bowl.

On the defensive side of the ball EIU added depth at defensive back with Jermiah Rainey (http://eiupanthers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4669) and at linebacker with Steven Mychalchuk (http://eiupanthers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4678) and Isaiah Riddle (http://eiupanthers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4670). Rainey (5'9") played at Contra Cost College in California helping the team post a 10-1 record as he made 15 tackles with four pass break-ups. Mychalchuk played two seasons with one at Dean College in Massachusetts and one at College of DuPage. Between the two schools the 6'3" linebacker made 110 tackles with 22 tackles for loss. Riddle is 6'3" and redshirted at Kansas State last season.

In addition to the 12 transfers joining the team this summer and reporting camp, former EIU men's basketball player Dylan Chatman (http://eiupanthers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4647) is listed on the camp roster during his final season of collegiate eligibility. Chatman was a two-year member of the Panthers basketball team after transferring from Southwestern Illinois College. Last season he helped the Panthers hoops team advance to the second round of the CollegeInsiders.com Postseason Tournament.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin is set to officially get the 2015 football season underway as the Lumberjacks report back to campus on Sunday, August 9th, getting the fall practice schedule started at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, August 11th.

“We’re very excited to get underway and get the countdown started for 2015,” said second year head coach Clint Conque (http://www.sfajacks.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/clint_conque_879966.html). “We have a lot of experience in a number of positions but also have a bunch of young players that are looking to step up. There are still a lot of question marks across the board and some depth that needs to be developed at some key positions.”

Conque and the Lumberjacks take to the field at 5 p.m. for the first week of practice before beginning two-a-days the week of August 17. SFA will hold a pair of scrimmages leading up to the 2015 season, the first being held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 22, with the second getting underway at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, August 26.

SFA looks to be well stocked in a handful of positions from last season’s FCS playoff team, including quarterback, offensive line, wide receiver and defensive line. But there are a number of positions the Lumberjacks will be looking to fill after the loss of key seniors, most notably running back, linebacker and the defensive secondary.

The Lumberjacks are one of the last FCS schools to begin its fall camp schedule being classes don’t begin at SFA until Monday, August 31st. Once the first practice gets underway on Tuesday the 11th, SFA will be 25 days out from the 2015 season opener against Northern Arizona on September 5 at Homer Bryce Stadium.

Samford held the first scrimmage today. IMO, our offense has a L-O-N-G ways to go, and I'm glad glad we weren't facing a tough UCA Team this morning. However, Coach Hatcher seemed fairly well pleased, and that is much more important than my thoughts. Defense looked VERY solid.

I've been to a few practices. QB D'Shaie Landor is having a great camp so far and looks poised to have a big year. He's not Bryan Bennett but is a dual threat QB and does some things better in the passing game. We'll have a lot of weapons around him at WR and RB and should have some fresh names emerge on the offensive side of the ball. Defense has been as good as advertised and should be better than last year. As far as special teams go, we'll have true freshman kicker and a true freshman punter, plus a new deep snapper. The talent is there but we'll have keep our fingers crossed when we kick or punt the football.

I've been to two practices and have seen a bunch of tension between the players. Not healthy tension either. Maybe a trip to Alabama will help them vent in a healthy manner.

I went to McNeese's 4th practice Sunday. The defense is definitely looking good. The offense looked a little ragged but it is early, yet. I'm reserving any judgement until the first scrimmage next Saturday.

The new surgery on Daniel Sams thumb is doing good and he is zipping the ball a lot better than he ever could last season with the other type of surgery that eventually failed. He can grip the ball a lot better and get on top of his throws better. If he can effectively throw the ball this season with the way he can run, it definitely make things interesting.

Here are some photos from McNeese's Sunday practice: http://www.docsshots.com/p1042556985

They lucked out yesterday. It clouded up and a thundershower was approaching with the preceding winds that cooled things off.

I don't know if 7PM practices would be much better because then they would have to practice in the stadium on the turf and that turf just holds the heat. Right now they are practicing on natural grass on the practice fields. We will see how hot it gets for the 6pm scrimmage in the stadium next Saturday. I'm going to bring a bunch of water and gatorade for me to drink while taking photos on the sideline.

We practice on the turf at 7 pm and it's a zillion times better than the afternoon. Of course we always practice on the turf and rarely ever use the grass fields anymore.

I went to a full pad practice. Temp near the field was 115 degrees. That turf holds in some serious heat. Players were versed on hydration but man I bet some of them lost a few pounds. I think the temp that morning was 90 degrees. Here's a video of the first rather cool practice in full pads. Watch the heat as it gets to both sides and a fight breaks out at the 2:34 mark. Keep it safe SLC!

They don't sound happy about it either. Not pissed but not thrilled. I listened to Sawyer and Demos. Both gave the right answers but you could hear it in their voice and see ot on their faces.

The last time a picture like this was taken was Rennie and Davis in 2010 and that situation ripped the locker room apart.

I understand this one a bit more. Dunne and Sawyer were on campus. New OC comes in and wants his kind of guys....Demos and Bailey and the freshman from Chicago.

I wouldn't be shocked if it's Demos or Bailey though.

Saw Bailey at Illinois a few times. His mechanics are horrible. Should have come to college as a WR.

It's where I'm hoping he gets moved too. That size and speed would be great out there

McNeese72
August 16th, 2015, 03:26 PM
Report on McNeese's First Scrimmage:

We passed the ball. Sometime is was complete, sometimes incomplete, and I think there was an interception. The receivers sometimes dropped the ball, sometimes caught the ball, made some very good catches going up and getting the ball on backshoulder throws, and every once in a while scored a TD. The runningbacks ran with the ball, occasionally fumbling and occasionally scoring a TD. The Qb's got passes off but sometimes were sacked (by just being touched not tackled) and sometimes scrambled.
The offensively line blocked. The TE's, as far as catching passes, were non existent at this scrimmage.

On defense, the QB was occasionally sacked. We had some hard hits (especially by the linebackers) but also had missed tackles. Freshman Lawayne Ross is a load to try to tackle. The DB's made good plays to break up passes but then got beat on some plays.

The first team defense is either very very good or our first team offense sucks. Our second and third team offenses are really good or our second and third team defenses suck.

Doc

Note: I'll let the coaches evaluate the scrimmage because I don't have a clue. ;)

Yep, you got it. ;) But, yesterday it was lightning that delayed things for 45 minutes.

Oh, and I did take some photos, if anybody is interested.

Sounds like it's between Bailey and Sawyer with Sawyer in the lead.

Also sounds like the freshman, Dunne, is right behind those two. So in theory with Sawyer a senior and Dunne woth 3 years after that none of the transfers may play

A former UNI WR - Brett Lemaster - who saw the situation play out last season in the locker room and was the teams #1 or #2 WR all year long made it pretty clear what he thinks should happen (and likely what shouldn't have happened last year)

Brett LeMaster ‏@BLeMaster89 (https://twitter.com/BLeMaster89) 7m7 minutes ago (https://twitter.com/BLeMaster89/status/635303379367948288)
If Sawyer doesn't start at QB for @UNIAthletics (https://twitter.com/UNIAthletics) this year, someone really needs to evaluate who is making this decision... Again!

It's pretty clear that Verduzco was the reason behind the switch to Carnes. It does seem to confirm my initial thoughts, and what I heard from people very close to the program, Sawyer was gone of Mario wasn't.

It's not very often former players take shots like that...really speaks volumes to me about the situation

Daurice Fountain - #1 WR on this years team
Will Roth - TE on last years team
Alex Paup - LB on the team, son of UNI DL coach Bryce Paup
Brett McMakin - All American LB on the team...

Wow I'm sure Farley is pleased about this tweeting.
I think farley knows what the players want, and wanted last year. There's a reason the QB coach is now gone. Believe it or not Farley isn't tone def. He won't publicly admit this, like he did in 2010, but the QB situation was FUBARed the last two years.

Will he sit down with current players on that list? I'm sure. Will the have some extra conditioning drills? Likely.

Remember Lemaster has graduated. UNI has no control over what he says.

I firmly believe Sawyer will start, but not because of that tweet
