It was Sep. 14, 1992. George Bush was president, Barack Obama was a 31 year old teacher at the University of Chicago, and Youngstown State were national champions.

That was the year Georgetown lost its season opener two days earlier...to Ursinus College.

In honor of Sports Illustrated's 60th anniversary, SI.com is republishing, in full, 60 of the best stories in the magazine's history. Today's selection is "What Is The Citadel (https://edit.si.com/college-football/team/citadel-bulldogs)?" in which Rick Reilly explores the dark world of hazing and harassment of and by athletes at The Citadel, a military college in South Carolina (https://edit.si.com/college-football/team/south-carolina-gamecocks). It originally ran in the Sept. 14, 1992 issue.

Montana starts the season 1-5 and is definitely gonna have their first losing season under Don Read. He's probably getting the axe after this clunker.

Montana is having real QB trouble this year as well. Brad Lebo has a good arm but the dude is in cement shoes. Nothing on the horizon either. Lebo and Wilberger get hurt in a game against EWU and they bring in this freshmen named Dave Dickenson and he flat out blows in the few series he played.

We're done! Fold up the tents and close this place down!

WOW! Just Wow! Is there any proof that things have changed or are things still the same? You guys did read this, right?

Is there any proof that this was true to begin with?

This was nothing more than a garbage article written by a mediocre reporter. We are an easy target for this type of hit job for all sots of reasons. I showed up at The Citadel in August of 1981 and graduated in 1985. Number of times I was physically hazed or put in danger of physical harm: 0. As an upperclassman, the number of times I physically hazed or put in danger a Knob: 0. Number of times I saw Knobs physically hazed in all 4 years: 0. Was it/is it mentally and physically demanding? Yup. It absolutely sucked most of Knob year. Do a lot of folks leave their Knob year? Yup. So I guess every time someone can't hack it and leaves because he does not like to jump when told to, some cockeyed accusations are made about how they were hazed. Makes it much more palatable to Mom or Dad, or the friends back home if they were hazed instead of they just could not hack it, right? "Drop and give me 30 Mister" is not hazing. Assigning a Knob to do 60 minutes worth of tasks in 30 minutes is not hazing. Staying up late polishing brass or shoes, because if you didn't you were in for it, is not hazing. Getting up at 0530 and going on a 3 mile run is not hazing. Having someone in your face screaming at you is not hazing. But for some, it is too much and they leave. It is physical, but for most it is the mental strain. You could not do everything they want no matter how hard you tried. But that is the point. I can tell you that the mental discipline I developed due to the strain has served me very well in all sorts of professional and personal situations since then. Anyone who has made it through will say the same thing.

Don't put too much stock in what this goon Reilly had to "report." It was nothing more than half truths, spin, and innuendos from, what was at least quoted as, a whole lot of exaggerations. It isn't true now any more than it was, what, 20 something years ago.

But maybe I should thank SI. The last time they printed this my Bulldogs went 11-2 with wins over Arkansas and Army and ended up at #1 in the final regular season poll.

Speaking of Arkansas in 1992, Arkansas would later go to defeat #4 ranked Tennessee. That loss would be the beginning of a three-game losing streak for the Vols, which spelled the end of Johnny Majors' reign at UT. UT would turn to an assistant who started out the season as interim head coach while Majors had his bypass surgery in August of that year. He later went on to sign a progeny of a well-known SEC/NFL quarterback and do extremely well, winning the SEC in this quarterback's final year. The year following, they did better as they knocked off Florida State to win the BCS championship. He has had some successful seasons but was never able to replicate the success that he had since UT won the national championship. He was unceremoniously fired by UT admins, which touched off a regression that lasted until last season, when Tennessee knocked off Iowa in the Taxslayer.com Bowl (you would remember it as the Gator Bowl). This assistant did manage to land on his feet, so to speak, as ETSU recently tapped him to help reboot their previously dormant football program (they have their first game in a few weeks against Kennesaw State). I remember nominating this assistant to be ETSU's head coach until he declined. That UT assistant was none other than Phillip Fulmer.

And now you know the rest of the story.

I hear there is a girl who applied to the Corps of Cadets at The Citadel and may sue if she doesn't get in. Shannon Faulkner's first cousin was in my senior class this exact same year, 92-93. 9/14/92 eh? Well, my high school football team was 0-3 at this point on our way to a massive 3-8 campaign. Ah, it was fun nonetheless. One of our three wins was against our rival and it completed a clean 4-0 sweep against them for the class of 1993. Almost got into a fight with them after the game, and some parents almost got involved. I remember all of us flipping the bird to their bus and we were leaving the stadium. One of the school teachers for this said school sent our principal a letter the next week virtually running down our entire coaches and players and administration. Our principal, an old grizzled CFL veteran believe it or not gave it to our coach, a CITADEL BY-GOD GRADUATE TO BOOT and I remember Coach ripping up and stomping on the letter during practice the following week to get us fired up for the next game. Didn't work, we lost that one 28-0. LOL!
