Get that track out of there.

Yuck.

I agree. Tracks around football fields look terrible. I'm glad Princeton got rid of theirs when they built Princeton Stadium in the late 90s.

I agree. I hate that thing!! We need to just move and build a new stadium. But we are land locked in Boone......

There is a strong possibility the track will be moved in the near future. This won't mean much to most of you folks, but it is my understanding the university purchased some land beside the Broyhill Inn and plans are being made to build a new track & soccer stadium up there.

I've always thought (and I don't know why) that if (and it's a big if) ASU ever goes I-A and needs to build a I-A stadium, they'd build it out on the State Farm Field property.

asu tried to buy the land where watauga high school is now (they're buildling a new high school) and we were gonna put a stadium there...the town made a fuss though so looks like we're just gonna be renovating our current press box and making the stands on smaller side equal to the big side...which will be plenty for now...i like where our stadium is but we definitly gotta get rid of that track

An artist rendering of the first two stages of new construction at Illinois State University. I hope they start the project soon, and these two sections I guess add 24,000 seats to the Hancock Stadium, as well as new and upgraded pressboxes and a concourse area. I guess we are also getting a new scoreboard in the North endzone (the open side, not pictured) which will feature a new video board. Cool stuff.

Man, do we UNH old timers get sick with jealously looking at ALL these great 1-AA (oops, FCS) stadiums. Anybody want to trade? :smiley_wi You can have Cowell Stadium no questions asked. But, you can't have our football team! :D

That has to be a joke...App's stadium is pretty decent by I-AA standards. There are plenty of high schools with a better place to play than UNH based on what I've seen of it in pics and on TV. I haven't been there, but I have been to the rock. (That's not intended to be smack at all by the way..UNH has a hell of a football team for sure).

I am from the Chicago area (live in NC now). I lived in Normal one summer and had some good friends go to ISU. I had the opportunity to use the ISU athletic facilities and was very impressed, especially Redbird arena. Each year I am surprised ISU is not a better in men's hoops, especially with Chicago and Peoria close by and a relatively low number of quality in-state D-1 schools (with similar or better facilities) to compete with in recruiting. Nevertheless, Hancock Stadium is not great in it's current form, but the renderings look great. It will be a great facility if built.

I would have thought that also, but apparently Administration knows something we don't, because I just don't see them putting 30m into this thing now and then building a new stadium in the future for a possible I-A jump.

Apps new Stadium renovations this coming year will make 2007 a "season of inconvenience" for fans, players, coaches, and media according to University officials. It looks as though the home side bathrooms, concession stands, and press boxes will be out of use next season while they build the new 7 story stadium complex. One of my friends did an interview with the vice-chancellor and he said home games will be limited becasue of this.

Once near 200, now down to like 80..... I think the new band director needs to begin recruiting the local high school bands, which are 2 and 3 times the size of this one... Still do a great job sound wise, but size wise, we can't even make a damn Y anymore!

Your situation is the exact same as ours. The Gold Star Marching Band once had over 200 members (back in the days when they ACTUALLY WERE "The Pride of North Dakota"), now it's down to less than 90 this year.

While I don't really care about bands too much when it comes to the football atmosphere, I still want to see them increase their numbers in the coming years. Problem is that there's only 7 high schools (5 public, 2 private) in the immediate Fargo-Moorhead urban area and only five of them have bands (there are not much more large high schools outside of F-M), and all of them are smaller than the GSMB. North Dakota doesn't have a lot of big high schools. A population of only around 640,000 will do that to you. Only 20 or so high schools in the state have over 500 students, so marching bands are not a big thing in this state.

We too are experiencing band trouble at UNI...

Our former and popular director left late in the summer. That led to hiring a former high school director to do one year. He was such a jerk that over a third of the band quit.

They played the fight song at a much much slower tempo all year and I heard them booed once. Its too bad because its not the kids fault its the idiot director....

Brown went 9-1 a year ago and won the Ivy League title outright for the first time in school history. However, their star running back graduated last year, and this year they went 3-7 including losing to Dartmouth and Columbia. The other thing I have wondered is how Ivy League teams would do if they got to play in the playoffs. I think Brown's team from a year ago could have played with App State and Northern Iowa.

You would be incorrect. Just here in Kentucky...

WKU-no visitors side during their I-AA days (and it's still true at the moment)
EKU-16,000 to 4,000 ratio (basically the same as YSU)
Murray State-no visitors side

All of these are 63 scholarship teams.

I think EIU from this year's playoffs also has a one-sided facility. It's fairly common across the FCS in general.

That is impressive. But it must be annoying to live there. Those elevators better be in tip-top shape. During fire alarms at my dorm at App last year, the elevators shut off until 30 minutes after the fire department comes, so you have to go down the stairs back up them. 8 flights both ways! A little exercise won't hurt anybody! My current dorm is only 4 stories.

Yeah I never lived there. The elevator system is pretty crazy in it, and there are like 9 or 10 I think. I try to avoid going in there at all costs, its pretty much like one giant maze, the first time I was in there, I got totally lost, and that was sober. Just think if I was drunk...I might still be lost in there to this day...

I went out to a UD-YSU game in Youngstown back in 1998 and I loved the stadium. Great atmosphere. It helped that UD won, but the YSU fans were great and they should be proud of their stadium.
It was much nicer than the field the Hens and Penguins played on in 1979 when I went there for the 51-45 Shootout. I think it was a High school field called Falcon stadium.

Falcon Stadium btw is the HS Stadium of Austintown-Fitch High School, a suburb of Youngstown. It seats 10,000, but its a lot nicer nowadays. They just put in brand new turf this past month, and plan on adding additional press areas and possibly new seats.

It didn't start out that way. As the season went on, and the losing actually got worse, the fans left. Last year the stands were full. I we win many of the "bandwagon" fans will be back. It's their fault and those who are appathetic that keeps us from expansion.

The original plan showed us double decking the Home side 1st, then the away side, then closing one endzone, then the other for the expansion plans.

I would personally like to see the either of the endzones be done before double decking it. IMO Why go up, when you have plenty of space on the first level?

I actually can give you an answer to that in EKU's case...although ours isn't one sided, but just drastically disproportionate as you said. It's about the same proportion as YSU's Stambaugh with 16,000 plus on one side and 4,000 on the other. Granted the "visitors" side is pretty plain. With WKU building their second side as well it will pretty much just be Murray State now.

Anyway....

In the late 1960's EKU's "signature" President Dr. Robert R. Martin decided the school needed a new football stadium to replace old Hanger Stadium which had two equal sides but only held around 8,000.

He asked the state for funding for a new football stadium and they quickly denied it. So instead, Martin asked them if they would fun a new physical education building at EKU. This they went for.

So Martin commisioned a Physical education building with a slanted "roof" on the back of it where bleachers and seats could be installed...and this became the new football stadium at EKU.

It was then known as Hanger field, and now as Roy Kid Stadium with the field still bearing the original name. The actual academic building is known as the Robert Begley building.

NoCoDanny
March 7th, 2007, 11:50 AM
I think it's a money issue and also allows for easier future expansion. You build one side and then if expansion is needed in the future you build the other. Much easier to build a seond side then to add a second deck. The only example that comes to mind of adding a second deck later is what they did at Wyoming many decades ago.

Those openings at the bottom of UMass' stadium are where the fans enter and exit. Weird setup for sure. It's like an upper deck section of seating without the lower deck. Like in a lot of stadiums where the decks are seperated (upper deck stacked higher), but the main concourse in between provides easy access to either level, but in this case, there's no lower deck.

What is plan for App State?

Looking at this picture it seems that all that is being done is building a new larger pressbox/suites.

From the picture it looks like the track is still around the field.

Oh and the lights are still on the press box in that picture too. Are they going to move them back?

Ah, so they aren't moving the track.

Also, why build the indoor facility to only 80 yards long?

Does building a 120 yard facility really cost that much more?

It's not only that but what's above that area on the mountain. There are more structures farther uphill from there. I'm sure there's some point at which you're endangering their stability. I'm sure that if the cost had been reasonable they'd have built it that way.

The indoor practice facility will be located further back where the right field of the former baseball field is, which is being switched to softball as we speak. Why build it to 80 yards? Well the softball field will be there and it only allows for so much room. That and unless you are playing a game in there do you really need 100. Just enough room to hold a good practice and do what you came to do. Field turf isn't the cheapest stuff.

I'm with ya there. One time i was lucky enough to win a package to go to a 49ers game and visit San Fran. however the seats were in the club seats and i would much rather have been sitting in the stands with the fans. Hell I don't know why Griz fans sit in the box seats, it seems to ruin the atmosphere.

I sure that more than a few Griz fans will let me know if I am wrong, but I think when the Griz first opened Wash/Griz stadium, it was quite a bit smaller (I am guessing it held around 10,000 to 12,000 back then) than the present 23,000 than it holds today and I am not sure that it was not sold out every game back in 1986. Now not only are they selling out every game, but they are expanding again. I think that they are adding an additional 4,000 seats that will also include club seating. 14 straight years in the playoffs and two national championships will do that for a program.

Sucess breads interest in a program. Interest in Cal Poly is growing. It is better to have a plan and not need it than to have no plan and wish that you did. If you do not, that is how you end up with a patch work stadium that has no logical flow to it.

I think basically they would turn the huge visitor side (the old home side) into the same type of spanish facade (or whatever style you call that) that the new home side is.

Then add seating in one endzone and a videoboard in the other.

Looks like the move should be to build 2 new sides to the stadium starting where the track starts. One side should have a new pressbox with club seating and suites.

That seems to be about the standard of the top tier FCS teams.

Exactly. The way the turf was put in hints that the pressbox/suite side will be opposite the current pressbox side. This is also in line with the apparent fact that the parking deck was built so that it could support a tier/pressbox in the future.

DunkandDukin
May 3rd, 2007, 03:46 PM
Thom, if I recall you're an architect or something, what would be your estimation on how the press boxes would "attach" to the garage? would it add another ceiling to the top of the garage and thus close it in, or would it sort of balance between the stadium top and the tops of the elevator shafts? I'd hate to lose my parking in the sunshine spot on the top deck...:)

th0m
May 3rd, 2007, 03:57 PM
Actually, I'm merely an architecture student, so any theories I may have are purely speculative :) Especially since I haven't been taught on stadium design in particular.

In the long run (and maybe never), I would think that the force of a pressbox tier should be distributed evenly across the structure. This means from front to back. Sideways shouldnt be a problem as the parkingdeck isn't as wide as the length of a football field. For a first stage, I see them only utilizing the front columns of the parking deck. Assuming the entire stand is knocked down and moved closer, it would have to be a huge deck if it were to reach from the field all the way to the back of the deck. If that's the case, I'd rather see 2 tiers, so that the first tier stops right around where the parking deck begins, self-supported. Then have the press/luxury where the gap between the stadium and the deck is, and an eventual upper tier completely covering the parking deck, from front to back distributing the load evenly across. This will also help aesthetically (not that that is a top priority for college stadiums, but it doesn't hurt either).

I think that losing some sun is definitely not out of the question, but I don't think they'd put an entire ceiling on top of the top-deck if they wouldn't utilize it. In the future they might use such a ceiling as a concourse of sorts, but I don't think we're quite there yet ;)

Also, if (more when than if I hope) they knock down Godwin, it would seem more than logical to put a parking deck on that side as well. Not only for gameday purposes, but in general (I think there are a couple of decks still in the pipeline anyway). Maybe a Godwin alternative is also among the annoucements?

This ovciously isn't my forte, i'm having trouble getting my brain around this. So are you saying the upper deck would probably over hang the existing seats moreso that the deck, IYO?
I guess having them anchored at the top of the existing stands and continue back and up would take them waaaaay off the field and probaly wouldn't work. i guess that makes sense and then the upper-upper deck, if it ever gets to that, would extend from the top supports of the parking deck up and back. eh?

th0m
May 3rd, 2007, 04:51 PM
I think so yeah. I think a full deck should either be supported by a large area of the parking garage, or not at all. With the pressbox, it probably is not as big a deal since it is a smaller area. But then again, engineering nowadays pretty much knows no limits. Neither do the pricetags though. It's all about the bang for the buck.

Wait 'till you see the renovations to the concessions, restrooms, and the pavers in the concourse areas.

GSU has a damn nice set up.

Just replace that grass with turf and you're set.

With the weather in Statesboro, there is no need for turf.

Thanks for the info guys.

or our homecoming game last year, we had 9,500 students in attendance. We had 22,500 or so total.

Student tickets are free during the regular season, during the playoffs it's $6.

What was the (overall) attendance for GSU's game against NDSU last year? I wasn't there in person but I do have a kick-ass video of the game. Your atmosphere was 2nd to none (ok, except for Montana but we all know that blah blah). As a Bison fan, I have always modeled our program after Ga Southern. We have beaucoups respect for you guys and to come down there and play you was an honor. I cannot wait until you return the favor in Fargo in '08. Bring your crawfish to the tailgate because this is one Norwegian who cannot get enough Cajun. I'll trade you for some pickled herring, ha haxbowx xbowx xthumbsupx xeekx

I really like Georgia Southern's field!

It's beautiful. There are a LOT of teams who have had their asses kicked in that beautiful stadium. Did I mention beautiful? I digress......xbowx

No school ever needs anything.

Having turf is a luxury. It's nice for the fans, players, coaches, administrators and maintenance crew to never have to worry about safe footing, surface performance affecting the outcome, maintenance costs or the field looking good.

It's rare when the field doesn't look good.

With the uproar that went up when we got rid of the option, if we put in turf and put Roger out of a job, I think there'd be some people tearing down the stadium. The man has a ring for each of our championships cause of the work he does. That means he has SIX. Not many people can lay claim to that. Also, he's the only one that's ever worked with that grass if I remember correctly, since he's been around since the stadium was built.

Also, I've heard from people that have played on golf courses that Majors are played on, and they've said the Paulson grass is some of the best they've seen or walked on. The drainage on the field is incredible, I think it can handle up to 6 inches an hour or something. See the Hugo Bowl, when a football game was played in the middle of a hurricane.

With all that, who needs turf? :)

It is nice but it removes something natural about football. It's a luxury that Eagle fans don't want - after each football game kids and their parents are still allowed to go down on the field, many play quick pick up games or just toss a ball around. I hope turf is never put it - I doubt it could match Rodgers drainage anyway ;-) Seriously, check out some video of the 'Hugo Bowl.' There should be some out there since it was on ESPN.

Football is natural?

Yeah, I often see deer in the woods playing football.

So your theory is that fieldturf prohibits families, esp. young children, from going down to the field, playing pick up games and tossing a ball around?

*blank stare*.................

I'm sure Rodgers is a great guy.

Nothing against him.

Give it time, my friend.

When NFL teams are switching to it, even with the vast resources they have available to put into grass, you know the fall won't be long in coming.

I'm sure turf is great stuff, in fact I believe we are building a 50 yard field of it over at the football practice complex as part of the upgrades but we just don't want it at Paulson and I've never heard anyone say we need it.

I'm glad App has it because of the weather in Boone late in the season and while I've never been to ND I'm sure it comes in handy there as well but Statesboro is basically a tropical climate. Look at the Jacksonville Jaguars, Jacksonville Municipal Stadium where they play is a little under 90 minutes from Statesboro. It has natural grass and they seem to think it is just super as well.

Why you don't want it, I don't know. Must be an anti change thing.

Give it a rest MPLS, Paulson has one of the best playing surfaces in the country according one of NDSU's coaches. He thought it was even better than the Rose Bowl. Field turf is a great thing for areas where growing grass is difficult or costly to maintain but it seems like neither of those are a problem at GSU.

If Appalachian could get away with having a grass field, KBS would have one. Georgia Southern can get away with having a grass field, hence Paulson has one.

Nothing like the real stuff.
