Could not agree with you more...One sided stadiums are terrible. I would rather have a balance two side stadium then a monster one sided stadium.

The homeside should and can be a little bigger but dont let it get out of control were the home side is sitting 12K and the away side is sitting like 3k

I'm not a huge fan of stadiums that are outdoors where both sides are equal in size. I think it's because with the only occasional occurrence of sellouts in I-AA, that the side opposite the press box would always look half-empty. That kind of setup works well for indoor stadiums, though. (UNI Dome, Walkup, ISU's, etc.) My personal preference for the size of a I-AA outdoor stadium would be a main side that's not huge like YSU's, but maybe the size of SDSU's main grandstand (50 or so rows from goal line to goal line). And then the other side would be roughly 1/2 the capacity of the main side, but maybe 2/3ds as tall. So for example, if the main side is 50 rows high and stretches from goal line to goal line, then an optimal size for the other side would maybe be something that's 30 rows high and stretches from the 15 to the other 15. Make it like something where when you first look at it in person, your mind would trick you to think that they're both the same size, but upon closer examination, you'd realize that they're not.

Yuck!
I prefer a stadium with more balance, but YSU has an awesome stadium.

Bowers official seating is 14,000, but it could hold over 20k if the grassy areas were opened up for seating or put more bleachers in. Of course as the school grows and the program has to become a national contender every year.

Game day atmosphere is improving by leaps and bounds every year.

I still like our facilities.

Part of the expansion encloses the scoreboard end but the first two expansion phases are to add an upper deck to the south side (home side) then the north side (students / visitors). It is much cheaper to buy grass seats, thereby making games more affordable plus it's a long-standing tradition for kids to bring cardboard boxes and slide down the hills. This tradition may come to a halt, however. It is rumored the school is replacing the chain-link femce around the field with brick, which is not a "giving" as the chain-link.

Personally, I hope they have to expand Paulson soon.

Stang Fever, what are the chances the stadium will done for the first game on Sept. 2nd? From pictures of the construction it looks like it will be tight. They scheduled the dedication ceremony for the second home game against Southern Utah on Sept. 29th. That looks a little more likely. Either way it will be worth the wait.

I am not sure....from the looks of it, its going to be tight...but if you ask me the last thing they need to worry about is the stadium i would be more concerned with the playing surface, cause grass needs at least two months to hold and that means no later then July 4th all the grass needs to be laid

they are hoping for field turf but who knows

as for poly to the WAC no way..............everyother sport would have to go and that means more $ so unless someone comes with the big bucks i doubt it

Either school would be a natural fit for the WAC, but I think UC Davis is primed for the move more than Poly given the larger student body and potential more financial backing. Don't think Cal Poly "leadership" has the vision (or stomach) for moving up to the WAC. :(

Having said that, I think Poly is, at least for the near term, in a good spot in the Big West...the competition is top notch and the rivalries are naturals.

Well I will have to agree and disagree with you....just cause i really like our AD i think that she is a good leader....so the leadership is there......BUT i agree with the vision....The school does not have the vision of making Cal Poly a top notch Athletic program nor the stomach to move to a better conf. Seems that the school only cares about Academics which is the main reason for the school and they only tolerate athletics cause they enjoy it to some degree. its just my belief that you can have both TAKE DUKE for example top notch school and top notch athletic program (well at least in basketball, football is a joke)

or facilities are a joke. seems like when ever something is build two years later they come back and say we should have made it bigger...Mott Gym is a joke def. not WAC ready

Baseball is good and I wouldnt want them to leave the Big West.

You can walk underneath the stands...and come out on the side nearest the sports center...if you are facing the home stands this is to the left...it's very cavelike under there...

I'm pretty sure the ORIGINAL turf installed in the UNI-Dome in 1976 remained until 1992 when they finally replaced it (Cap'N can correct me if I'm wrong). I was fortunate enough to play high school ball on the new turf, which at the time was a dream. People who played on the original turf in the later years said it was like falling on cement.

It may be made of tin, but it looks like a nice facility to me. I would be more than happy to see UND join the GWFC. I think that they would be a great addition. The 13,500 seat Alerus Center would have to rank in the top half of I-AA facilities and it would be welcomed in the GWFC by this fan.

Not quit sure if I follow. I believe if you own something, it's your property. Therefore it's owned by Fargo and property of Fargo. Maybe the Bison just rent the arena? They also do the same thing for their baseball team. It's owned by a minor league baseball team, but the Bison play their too. I could be wrong.

Down, boy! eagle1, we realize you have a problem with Montana and its fans, and EWU has done better than anyone else in the BSC against Montana since Wash-Griz was built, but try not to slant your arguments too much against the facts--EWU is 4-6 in Wash-Griz since it was built in 1986, compared to Montana's 7-2 since 1986 in Cheney and Spokane against the Eagles. Thus, Montana has earned the right to call the Washington playing surface against EWU "Washington's Grizzly Stadium", because the Griz have owned the Eagles in Washington.

You won last year in Missoula. Good on ya. Let's wait until you've at least evened the series up in Missoula before claiming it as yours, though. ;)

Yes we do sell out, our official seating is 23,117. In our six regular season home games last season we averaged 23,513. 400 a game standing room attendance.

Next phase (2007) is a three story press box and luxury boxes on the east side. 3rd level will be Press Boxes, level 1 and 2 will be luxury boxes. Will only increase capacity by 250. Will increase our luxury boxes to around 75. The next phase (maybe by 2010) will be an expansion of the south end zone, seating, a sky club, football locker rooms and offices, and a new weight room. Beyond those two there's some talk of a third phase of additional seating on the west side, maybe a second deck. That might not happen till 2013-2014.

Don't forget about the Shockers! The recent push by the mayor to use city tax dollars failed but the underground word is that some Football alumni are putting together a coalition to bring back football. Lets hope it all works. For now here is a pic of Cessna Stadium. Not a very good one but it will have to do for now.

The stadium is used for the 4a, 5a and 6a state track meet every year. Every now and again Pitt State will play a game there as well as various high school teams. I believe there is a minor league football team called the Wichita Aztecs that play there as well. It is tough to drive by the stadium. I wish they would get after it and reinstate the program or tear it down. Here is a pic of what it looks like during the State track meet. One last thing, don't listen to the SWOMOST fans, they are only upset as they have been "owned" in recent years by the Shocks in most sports. Ironically, Mo State has replace Tulsa as WSU #1 rival. Adding football to the mix would only help and strengthen that rivalry. Something both schools need.

I agree with you on that one. If you guys got football we would have a true rival. It would be great for the schools and the Valley. Plus we could get rid of the Gateway name and bring back MVC football.

Georgia Southern Update:

The new Gene Bishop Fieldhouse is progressing very well thanks to good weather conditions. Notice the new brick wall in the scoreboard endzone. They are going to brick from the stands to the other endzone as well (but not in the endzone). They are pouring the foundation for the new fencing that will be replacing the old chain link fence. It will consist of brick columns with wrought iron. Here are some pictures (thanks Claydus for the pictures).

Not only is the chain-link fence around the playing field being replaced, but the fence surrounding Paulson Stadium is supposedly being replaced with brick columns and wrought-iron fencing. This will help put Paulson back among the top of I-AA facilities. Next I hope they do something with the concourse areas and concessions/restrooms.

Its roof is suspended on 1 1/2 inch cables from a dozen 80 foot stressed-concrete posts, each topped by a cast of the Thunderbird. It can accommodate 3000 seats undercover. Its front wall is built of Squamish Stone, one kind of stone which dyed into brown by its own iron oxide.

It was built in 1967, for a cost of $1,236,188. It only has bleachers on one side of the field, but there's a slope on the opposite side that's an OK seating area, and it's also easy to add temporary bleachers.

Yeah. They're suites. They spent some serious cash on that side of the field in the early '90s. Ironically, right after consecutive playoff appearances. (BTW...the only postseason we've had in school history)

I wish the same could be said for the east side (student section). I remember sitting over there and wondering if the bench was going to bust. Seriously...they were still wooden bleachers. With 20,000 students at the school, you'd think more props would be given to the student section.

Missouri State is getting a new basketball arena thanks to a $25 million donation. I wish our team could put some W's up so more sugar daddies would take interest in football.

St. John's regularly outdraws the St. Cloud State Huskies (DII) in attendance by three or four times every home game. (They're both located in the same area.) The Johnnies averaged almost 8,000 fans a game last year. Which almost DOUBLED the attendance average of the nation's #2 DIII team in attendance. Who is Glenn Bryant?
Glenn Bryant is a former State Senator who donated the land on which the stadium is built. The late Allen E. Paulson, founder of Gulfstream Aerospace, donated the majority of the money for the construction. Morris and Ann Lupton own a large chain of convenience stores and gave the money to build the building that formerly stood in the west endzone. It is being replaced by the Gene Bishop Building, which is in the above pictures.

I know it is more than you were asking but the history of the stadium is a neat one.

No offense to Dayton but that is a hideous location for a football stadium. The stadium isn't bad but the surrounding parking lots just make it look very awkward. I'm guessing Dayton rents the stadium from the city of Dayton since on the away side stands it says "Dayton Public Schools Welcome Stadium"?

I marched in band as a freshman on that field a quarter century ago. It had been around the block awhile back then. My alma mater was facing the old Nettie Roth squad that was among the most feared schools in Ohio back in the day.

That said, there are much worse I-AA facilities in America.

I think the stated capacity will be 10,500. However, they had almost 8,200 at last week's game against Southern Utah (with a current capacity of 7,500), and they'll probably cram in even more this weekend with Davis in town. So once the West grandstands are done they could probably shoehorn around 11,000 - 12,000 in the stadium.

Long term plans are to enclose one endzone and renovate the East grandstands too, but the cash has not yet been raised for that. The new West grandstands will be for the home team, whereas the East stands used to be the home side. Poly fans will have the nicer seats, but visitors will have the amazing view of the mountains and sunset. It will give them something nice to look at since they won't want to watch the Mustangs demolish their team on the field! :smiley_wi

Longhorn
October 18th, 2006, 09:12 PM
the track will be gone soon.....the endzone is schedule to be bowled in. I assume the remaining track will be removed at that point.

After that, the next phase is converting to a grass field.

Both should be done within 6-8 years

Nix on the grass field...this summer JMU installed a handsome new Turf Field (not astroturf, but that rubberized pellet stuff all the pros and others now seem to be playing on...W&M and UVA also got new Turf Fields this past summer...guess VA got a "good deal" or something from a traveling salesman xlolx ) ...and the track is already gone (sort of...it was painted a solid bland color...not an especially good look IMO, but it's no longer a "track" per se). But the new turf looks great...especially as it removed this horrible crown that made the old astroturf surface look like Moby Dick was trying to breech between the hashmarks. The new field is now FLAT (or mostly so...with a slight slope for drainage) and exhibits an alternating dark and light green pattern every 10 yards (looks exactly like Oregon's field now) with JMU's ever present Duke Dawg logo w/crown and cape at midfield and a big "MADISON" spelled out in each endzone. There is also a nicely upgraded VIP seating section on the West side (when the section is empty the colorized purple, gold and white seat backs make a big "M"). All nice upgrades, however, JMU now needs to add more permanent seats and improve its lighting. Enclosing the endzone is one possibility, as is adding an upper-deck and new VIP boxes on the Westside. Hopefully, by this time next year, some "official" word on the future expansion plans for the stadium will have been shared with the unwashed masses. The VA legislature approved a $10 million budget for expansion and improvements this past session, and a new lighting plan already seems to be in the works...gotta keep up with the UDs and Montanas! :beerchug: .

Yeah. Letters arent stiched yet. Basically the Ath. Dept. wanted to get the stadium as ready for the Homecoming Game tour as they could. So, they had the guys throw the letters out in the endzone for aesthetics.

With grass in the endzones the capacity will be 15,000, so I hear.

The turf at Cal Poly was scheduled to be included in the first phase but now will be installed in the future as funds are raised. Much like the original seating in Davis' first phase was supposed to be 12 to 15 thousand and lighting was suppose to be included. The seating has been reduced to 8,500 and the lighting cut because of funding.

Davis new stadium looks to be a first class facility that was well designed and thought out. One that your fans and team can be proud of. One that stands on its own merit. No need to say or imply how much better it may be than Poly's. I think both facilities will be first class and are great additions to both programs.

The other minor difference is that grassy area coming out in the opposite bowl.

I LOVE these two pics. Especially the press box one.

And that scoreboard KICKS ASS. I'm a big fan of new scoreboards being located in a corner, or angled on an end instead of straight on one end. It makes a facility look more "big time"

You guys went from having probably one of the 10 worst stadiums in the CS to having (in my opinion) one of the 20 or so best stadiums in the CS.

Great job on the stadium!!!

Due to being busy, some camera problems, and overall laziness I haven't posted these yet:

These were taken 10/21 vs. Holy Cross (which seems like 5 years ago, both time wise and football wise)

Anyway, they give some different perspectives of the renovations at Lafayette...(If there's interest I have other views that I can post...)

Hey Bison fans! Thanks! I just found out a good friend of mine who I graduated with (Shawnee High School in Medford, NJ) lives now for some time in Fargo! She is a dental assistant and works at a bar on the weekends!! Leopard Fan, obviously the Holy Cross pics were taken before most of the fans had come into the stadium since I recall a crowd of like 9200?

Fisher Field at Fisher Stadium? Do you plan to sell naming rights to one of them, or honor a second person with the other?

A family named Fisher originally donated the money to build the field in the 20s...another family named Fisher (unrelated to my knowledge) donated the money for the current renovations...so really it's both donars, and it's coincidence that they have the same last name...it is a mouthful though...

They are unrelated. It will be known as and called going forward "Fisher Stadium" The only ones calling it by its full name are Lafayette College press release and maybe some press hacks. Hey, Pards, did you catch that email from LC announcing the Lehigh game tailgate where they spelled it "Fischer" and then I got an email a few minutes later (same text) with the correct spelling and a disclaimer the first one was an error.

There's be some pissed off Mich. fans going "Hey! They stole our helmets!".

I think Princeton had those helmets first. Delaware and Michigan both copied the idea.

Yes they did. Fritz Crisler first debuted the winged football helmet at Princeton in 1935. When Crisler was hired by the University of Michigan in 1938 he brought the helmet style with him and Princeton ceased to use it. I wasn't until 1998 that Princeton brought the winged helmet back.

I recall reading that in a program at the Penn-Princeton game last year. Princeton painted the leather straps on their helmets orange. The "wings" on the Michigan and Delaware (and current Princeton) helmets simply reflect the natural contour of the old Princeton headgear.

Then again, I went to a safety school. What do I know?

An artist rendering of the first two stages of new construction at Illinois State University. I hope they start the project soon, and these two sections I guess add 24,000 seats to the Hancock Stadium, as well as new and upgraded pressboxes and a concourse area. I guess we are also getting a new scoreboard in the North endzone (the open side, not pictured) which will feature a new video board. Cool stuff.

Why is Illinois State expanding? Don't they have trouble filling up the one they have? They aren't considering going I-A are they?

Obviously they are if the capacity is going to be 40k+.

I guess they figure that with most IL schools being down (U of IL and NW are terrible, WIU has been average the last few seasons, EIU and SIU have been good recently, NIU hasn't been good the last couple seasons), there is a place for ILSU to take some fans away from the big guys.

Im pretty sure its in the master plan to move up to the BCS, which I dont particularly like, but whatever. We sold out a bunch of our home games this year, and they had to put in extra seating along the sidelines and the north endzone which is a grassy area. That and our amenities such as concessions/bathrooms/merch/basicallyeverythingelse suck at Hancock right now. Its kind of a running joke that "The Zoo" (the south endzone student section) will eventually just collapse on a big play if everyone jumps around. Its a rickety old piece of...well, it is in vast need of improvement, and with these additions, ISU is well on its way. Im figuring it will take some time before this is all complete, but im still excited about it.

that's pretty nice. JMU just finished construction on their Athletic Performance center (with classrooms, lockerrooms, weight rooms, etc.) but its located in our east end-zone. they also plan to increase the capacity of the stadium to 40,000 which would nearly triple the seating. i believe they plan to wrap the stadium so that the seats end up being a U-shape with the athletic building on the end. it should look pretty nice once they're finished (in 15 years or however long it will take to raise all the funds needed for that!)
