Or it might just be the rements of yesterday's game wearing off of me.

BTW, not to complain, but couldn't they have flipped the 2nd and 4th game in each side so the SoCon, A10 and Gateway don't have to square off against themselves if the win in the first round?

App vs CCU - App State
Too much going for App State to lose this one.

Montana State vs Furman - MSU
After watching MSU yesterday, I think they will suprise Furman.

E Illinois vs Illinois State - ISU
Don't know enough about E Illinois, so I am going with the team that won the earlier matchup and the fact the Gateway is a tougher conference.

Youngstown vs JMU - YSU
Holy crap! What a game this will be. I am giving the slight edge to YSU since they are at home and have beaten opponents convincingly. Be interesting to see how well JMU's D does against YSU.

Montana vs McNeese - Montana
Don't like this matchup like a person wouldn't like Georgia Southern even this year - too much playoff history with McNeese. Montana just has too much going for it as well.

S Illinois vs UT Martin - SIU
Although UT Martin is kicking butt this year, I have to go with the team that has the overall stronger conference and has been to the playoffs the last couple of years.

Hampton vs New Hampshire - UNH
Hampton hasn't convinced me yet that they are capable of stepping up and beating teams from stronger conferences.

UMass vs Lafayette - UMass
Too much power on the UMass side.

First Round:

BRACKET ONE
Coastal Carolina (9-2) at Appalachian State #1 (10-1)

I don't predict ASU games.

Furman (8-3) at Montana State (7-4)

If Felton & Grey were 100% Furman, they won't be so MSU

James Madison (9-3) at Youngstown State #4 (9-2)

Best game of the round - YSU at the Ice Castle, their RB is a beast, JMU is probably the fifth best team in the playoffs-total hose job

Illinois State (8-3) at Eastern Illinois (8-4)

ISU, don't know much about either team, but ISU is battle tested in the Gateway

BRACKET TWO
McNeese State (7-4) at Montana #2 (10-1)

Montana - Griz stadium, November against a Southland team, no brainer

UT-Martin (9-2) at Southern Illinois (8-3)

SIU, UT-M great defense but Whitlock runs SIU to Montana (SIU my upset pick in the second round)

Lafayette (6-5) at UMass #3 (10-1)

Pards are tough, but UMass's D is too good

New Hampshire (8-3) at Hampton (9-1)

Highest scoring game of the day, Santos to Ball at least twice as UNH cruises

You really think so??? Just curious after ISU already beat them by 2 TD's without their all american WR that is back in Laurent Robinson.

#2 WR Pierre Jelly Jackson had over 150 yards and 2 TD (i think those stats are correct)... if they couldnt cover our #2 by himself... can they really cover our #1 and #1 WR's???

just some food for thought...

App State: 27
Coastal: 20
Not that I think App State isn't good - they are my second pick to win the NC behind Montana, but Coastal is an underrated team who will put up a fight. They are already 2-1 against Socon teams and they beat the second and third best Socon teams.

Furman: 28
Montana State: 14
MSU will be eager to prove that they belong, and Furman will be at 100% after their week off. I don't think Montana State has the rush D to hold Furman.

Youngstown State: 31
James Madison: 27
JMU gets shafted as EIU and Hampton get to host and they do not, and they will pay the price for that.

Illinois State: 38
EIU: 28
I'm not sold on EIU and I think PSU would have made a more worthy opponent.

Montana: 42
McNeese: 13
I expect the Griz to be focused and play the best game they have all season to date.

MY UPSET PICK...
UT Martin: 17
Southern Illinois: 14

UMASS: 35
Lafayette: 13

New Hampshire: 34
Hampton: 20
Hampton is better than people think, but they will still be no match for UNH.

What he said... I am beginning to notice a fond alliance growing between JMU and Furman. Maybe it's the style of play, hard hitting D, the history of having great QBs from Florida, the mutual respect after a memorable Quarterfinal in their house in 2004 (while we won, they were the better team that year), eating humble pie from losing to Coastal Carolina, enjoying the sweet taste of victory when beating the Spiders in Richmond, great well-respected academic institutions, or simple fear that opposing teams must cope with when faced with the idea of getting beat by men wearing purple, but truly Furman is my favorite team outside of the CAA.

Wouldn't a Furman - JMU rematch in the semis be great? Could happen...either way, we would have to beat a team we lost to earlier in the year to get there. Just curious, where would it be played?

Yes it would. That's my dream scenario regardless of where it might be played. Jeff Bourne, our AD, was quoted as saying JMU bids would be "aggressive"... ??? We'll see in week 2 if we advance to see if we host in that round.

Illinois State (8-3) at Eastern Illinois (8-4)

ISU, don't know much about either team, but ISU is battle tested in the Gateway

BRACKET TWO
McNeese State (7-4) at Montana #2 (10-1)

Montana - Griz stadium, November against a Southland team, no brainer

UT-Martin (9-2) at Southern Illinois (8-3)

SIU, UT-M great defense but Whitlock runs SIU to Montana (SIU my upset pick in the second round)

Lafayette (6-5) at UMass #3 (10-1)

Pards are tough, but UMass's D is too good

New Hampshire (8-3) at Hampton (9-1)

Highest scoring game of the day, Santos to Ball at least twice as UNH cruises

So let's give that JMU 9-2 a win over YSU. Check the stats.

Wouldn't a Furman - JMU rematch in the semis be great? Could happen...either way, we would have to beat a team we lost to earlier in the year to get there. Just curious, where would it be played?

Yes a rematch would be great, especially in Greenville (a mere 1.5 hour ride up I-85). However, I think JMU has a score to settle with Happy Appy. I would prefer for the Dukes to dash the App hopes and dreams at the Rock!

By the way, is it just me or are the purple armies not getting any respect out here? I think JMad likes being the underdog, so please continue to bring on the YSU predictions. Just ask AppFan2008he "knows how bad" our team is. We're awful, 9-2, A-10 South Champ, Rascati QB on the 2004 NC team. -That's clearly a terrible track record. :smiley_wi Lucky for us this guy still has two more years of education before he is released on society. First off, I'd like to say congrats to all playoff teams. You all deserve it.

I'm disappointed in two items however:

1) Illinois State playing at EIU doesn't add up. Did the Redbirds not bid for a home game?????....the Blue Panthers have already been beat by 14 by the Redbirds.....

2) JMU at YSU is a TOUGH draw for both schools.....too bad.....

I like UMASS in the bottom half of the bracket.

The Top half with the #1 and #4 seeds....seem to have a tougher go....

How many teams besides App State (beat Furman and JMU) and UNI (beat YSU and Ill State) have beat 2 playoff teams.....and how many have played atleast 3 playoff teams?

I'll be cheering for SIU, UMASS, Ill State and App State to make the Semi Finals......

one thing your not thinking about though is how many teams were knocked out of the playoffs by teams......Montana beating PSU and Cal Poly......MSU beating PSU definately affected them, and im sure there are TONS of those senerios between all 16 teams. Quality wins are quality wins even if your win made it so that team DIDNT make the playoffs.

Eastern Illinois, well the OVC, is a subpar CS conference,
just a step ahead of the MEAC and SWAC, IMO.

Got any backup for that opinion?

I will shave my azz and run across the field wearing nothing but a diaper and a rainbow afro wig if EIU beats Illinois state.

Coastal Carolina at Appalachian State ... Mountaineers beat the chickens out of them in Boone, hopefully its really nice and cold. 38 - 16

Furman at Montana State ....MSU drops the Purple People Eaters in a close one 24-20 (but they score some in the 2nd half)

James Madison at Youngstown State .... I think this will be the best game of the first round, and JMU pulls it out in the end with a last second field goal 31 - 29

Illinois State at Eastern Illinois....... ISU excutes ball control and slaps the shackles down on defense for the win 28 - 7

McNeese State at Montana ...... tough first round draw for McNeese and they get spanked for it 31 - 3

UT-Martin at Southern Illinois..... Martin follows OVC standard procedure and lays an egg 24 - 14

Lafayette at Massachusetts .... UMass has got too much up front on offense, they pound the ball all day 35 - 10

New Hampshire at Hampton....... would rather see Wofford in here than stupid Hampton, they go home in the first round ....again 41 - 21

One backup would be recent playoff performance. I think the last OVC playoff win was in 2000 by then OVC member Western Kentucky beat Florida A&M. The last time a current member of the OVC won a playoff game was, I think, in 1996 when Murray State beat Western Illinois.

App State - IMO closer than expected, Thigpen and Simpson keep CCU in the game until late 3rd or early 4th - 28-17
Furman - Depends of health of Paladins. Honestly would rather host MSU to see how we stack up against different competition - 23-21
YSU - Game of the week. Home field advantage too much to overcome. Dukes got the shaft from the committee on this one - 28-24
ISU - OVC hasn't proven it produce playoff winners and the Redbirds prove they should have been at home for this one - 35 - 21
Montana - Griz handle the Cowboys at home - 21-6
SIU - See statement above regarding OVC. Gateway far superior league and Salukis prove it - 31-10
UMASS - Wish I could pick the upset here but UMASS D too much for the Pards - 24-3
Hampton - Hampton hasn't proven they can win in the playoffs but just a hunch that UNH is set for the trap - 28-27

Montana State v. Furman: Paladins playing with a chip on their shoulder. Give em hell.

Youngstown State v. James Madison: Not an easy task for the Dukes in round one. Should have beaten Villanova.

Ill State v. EIU: Dangerous offense. Needs to get clicking in the playoffs

Montana v. Mcneese State: I'm out on how good Montana actually is. They are a good bit better than Mcneese state though.

UTM v. SIU: Go Skyhawks

Umass v. Lafayette: no problem for the Minutemen

UNH v. Hampton: How did UNH tank the last half the season and come out smelling like roses? This is Hampton's chance to prove some people wrong. Many still consider UNH one of the nation's better teams.

I think I have pretty much a routine selection here. The Furman/MSU and JMU/YSU games will both be tight, and particularly in the case of JMU, the loser quite possibly could be better than a few of the remaining teams (UNH for sure, likely SIU, ISU and possibly Furman). Really tough draw there, JMU deserved the Hampton game. I think the UNH/Hampton game is pretty much a crapshoot, depending on which UNH team shows up. If the team of the first half/last 2 games shows up, then it's probably no contest. If not, Hampton could win going away. I just think Furman has a better team than MSU, so we'll see if they can bear it.

UNH/UMass will be a helluva 2nd round game, and you can't go wrong with APP ST/Furman, either.

Coastal Carolina at No. 1 Appalachian State Can't pick against no. 1 in the first round

Furman at Montana State MSU lost to Chadron State, but Furman has to travel 2,000 miles - that does it for me.

James Madison at No. 4 Youngstown State On a mission - for a week or two, anyway.

Illinois State at Eastern Illinois Very concerned about the "rematch rule" which says that the previous loser usually wins in the rematch. Is there any way this could be a tie?

McNeese State at No. 2 Montana What drunk scheduled this mismatch?

UT-Martin at Southern Illinois I once dated a girl whose last name was Martin, but I digress. This shouldn't be close

Lafayette at No. 3 Massachusetts I don't actually believe this, but if the unthinkable actually occurs and there is peace in our time, I will be the only person on the planet who has the right to come back here and give all of you the finger

Yeah, I'm not sure the travel thing is really all that big a deal. The team will be on a charter flight. Its not like they will have to sit in 3 airports waiting for connecting flights. Having the game at 1:30 our time would seem to help with the time zone lag. Seems like that's a much easier time to play than 11:30. Maybe MSU plays a lot of games that early, but it would seem strange to start that early. I would expect Furman to stay on EST with all their preparations. A night game out there would have been much more difficult for us. I imagine we will probably head out on Thursday (a day early) to help overcome the trip.

Appalachian State 55, Coastal Carolina 10

Furman -- They may have to travel 2,000 miles, but they'll show MSU who is the "better team"

Watched CCU this weekend against CSU. CCU did not look good in the first half, and CSU isn't all that great. Interested to see how CCU responds when they are down in the first half and more interested to see how ASU responds to CCU's intense catch-up passing game in the 4th quarter.

Furman 17, Montana State 14
Furman knows how to play in the playoffs and win close games even though they are not as great of a team this year. Coach Lamb will have these guys ready to compete and should hold on in a tough environment.

JMU 28, YSU 24
JMU should be pissed and on a mission because of their draw. I believe if JMU actually does win, all teams need to watch out. A lot of experience, good coaching, and emotion may lead this team to the semis.

Illinois State 35, Eastern Illinois 10
Don't know too much about EIU, but ISU has been a great team this year, but playing in a tough conference will only help them win. What's with all the Illinois teams in the playoffs each year?

Montana 20, McNeese State 10
Montana has a great chance to win it all, but they don't have a great offense. Defense wins championships, but you have to score in the playoffs too. Don't think they will be able to score against a good D (thinking of UMASS)

Southern Illinois 24, UT-Martin 6
Great running game and will eat up the clock. They don't give UTM a chance to score.

UMass 24, Lafayette 20
Closer than people expect. Playoffs are tough because all teams are good and deserve to be there. ASU played them last year in the first game and they gave us a handfull for a while. UMass needs to focus on each game and not begin to think of future matchups.

UNH 35, Hampton 14
My sleeper pick to win this bracket. If they get going and focus, they could be one of the best teams this year. Who can keep up with this offense if they get hot?

It seems that most folks, in making their predictions, do their best to analyze teams' strengths and weaknesses. Unless there's an OVC team involved, in which case they cite the opposing team's strengths and/or refer to the OVC's performance over the last few years. That's if there's any attempt at analysis at all, and not simply some use of the word "rolls."

I don't mind people picking against OVC teams. But how about basing those picks on the team in question rather than how their conference mates have fared in other years?

Black and Gold Express

Coastal Carolina at No. 1 Appalachian State
The head to head matchups point to a fairly big ASU win. Pulling stats from a post on the MMB (not by me), they have 5 common opponents this year with ASU going 5-0 and average score of 33-12 and CCU going 3-2 and average score of 33-30. CCU is terrible at rush defense, and proved they had no answer for the ASU ground attack last year, and it's just as potent this year. CCU has senior leadership, and the home field crowd will not be near as big as usual since the first round never is well-attended. But in the end I don't see this one being less than a 3 score difference. ASU 42 CCU 21

Furman at Montana State
You could say Furman got hosed, I don't agree. They may well have been one of the final teams in. They are beat up in key spots and are 0-2 against playoff teams this year. I have heard in years past from Furman fans that the Furman administration is loathe to make high bids for games, so it could just be that MSU put out more than the minimum bid and got the home game because of that. I watched the second half of the UM/MSU game and did not come away overly impressed with MSU, so that leads me to think this will be a close game. If Felton and Gray are playing near full strength, Furman has what it takes to win this one. And I'll fully admit that I'm a SoCon homer when games are close. That's the only reason I go with the Paladins to get their rematch with ASU, though deep down inside I'd like to see fresh blood grace Kidd-Brewer this year. Furman 24, Montana State 20

James Madison at No. 4 Youngstown State
For JMU, I can only go on what I've seen of them, which is the ASU game and the UNH game. Clearly that was two different teams that played in those games, but I hedge it by pointing out I was always critical of UNH's makeup especially on defense. JMU played ASU in the pre-Armanti "era" of this season, but our defense was the same as it has been all year, so a good defense can shut down JMU. They are not overly dynamic on offense. I know nothing of YSU this year, but to get a seed in this year's playoffs you have to be a good team. This is definitely the toughest game for all the seeds this round, but I'l give the edge to the home team. YSU in a grinder. Youngstown State 24, James Madison 18

Illinois State at Eastern IllinoisMaybe some day an OVC team will break through in the playoffs. Maybe it will happen this year. But it won't be against the Gateway. I'm going strictly on conference reputation for this pick. Illinois State 35, Eastern Illinois 21

McNeese State at No. 2 Montana
By everyone's admission, the Southland is down this year. Montana has played great considering they lost their best offensive player in Hilliard. Wash-Griz and Kidd-Brewer are the two stadiums nobody really wants to go to this year (and in large part because of that, my early pick is for an ASU/Montana finals) so the choice for me is easy here. Montana 28, McNeese State 10

UT-Martin at Southern Illinois
See the EIU/ISU pick. Gateway over OVC. This game is the OVC's best shot though, IMO. Southern Illinois 24, Tennessee-Martin 21

Lafayette at No. 3 Massachusetts
Lafayette has proven the past two seasons that they can be a tough opponent. They are big and plodding and methodical and don't make unforced errors. The biggest worry they have is facing someone with a lot of team speed. I see this one going similar to their game against ASU last year. Look for the Leopards to keep this game tight, maybe even lead it, into the late third quarter. Then it will be a matter of if UMass can wear them down or not and pull away. I say they can. UMass 34, Lafayette 23

New Hampshire at Hampton
UNH will be exposed by someone this year for the paper tigers they are, especially on defense. Fortunately for them, they face even more of a paper tiger in Hampton, who will again prove why nobody repesects any MEAC team in the playoffs anymore. UNH 52, Hampton 21

BillLuc1982

Nothing against Lafayette, I am actually cheering them on since they're the underdog.

And the safety reminds me of when YSU was really bad. They lost by some big number to 2. A lot of games in HS and college are like that. And we can't forget the 17-5 YSU-Marshall game in 1993!

people seem to be giving YSU all the love for "homefield advantage"...lets keep in mind that our 2004 run was all away and this year we beat the then top team in the nation at their own homecoming and followed it up the next week by beating a highly ranked richmond at their homecoming. the stats favor JMU in this one...better defense, similar run heavy offense. not saying we definately win, but our odds are better than the 3-1 we're getting here, homefield advantage or no.

You have a McNeese State team from a VERY down southland conference beating a good Montana team, i am curious behind you're reasoning? Not being condescending, just curious to know, maybe we've all overlooked something in Mcneese.

i know Mcneese winning seems a long shot but i have them as the big upset for the playoffs. they have been very good since the coaching change. i dont think that their record reflects how good they are now. i saw them lose to texas st on tv but that was because of a lot of turnovers and penalties. even with all the mistakes they were never out of the game (not that texas st was any good this year). i think that if they stop these mistakes they will put up a strong fight. plus i would like to see a slc team finally win at Montana.

im sure others are wondering why i picked Hampton over UNH. IMO UNH has slipped the second half of the season. i think it will be close i just dont think UNH is that good and they wont beat Hampton on the road.

Furman: 28
Montana State: 14
MSU will be eager to prove that they belong, and Furman will be at 100% after their week off. I don't think Montana State has the rush D to hold Furman.

One of the best Rush D's in the country, at just over 100 yards a game. This is one of our strengths. The question is, does Furman have the pass D to stay in the game and keep it low scoring.

A night game out there would have been much more difficult for us. I imagine we will probably head out on Thursday (a day early) to help overcome the trip.

No lights at MSU, thus the early start time. Starts getting dark at about 4:00 this time of year.

i know Mcneese winning seems a long shot but i have them as the big upset for the playoffs. they have been very good since the coaching change. i dont think that their record reflects how good they are now. i saw them lose to texas st on tv but that was because of a lot of turnovers and penalties. even with all the mistakes they were never out of the game (not that texas st was any good this year). i think that if they stop these mistakes they will put up a strong fight. plus i would like to see a slc team finally win at Montana.

im sure others are wondering why i picked Hampton over UNH. IMO UNH has slipped the second half of the season. i think it will be close i just dont think UNH is that good and they wont beat Hampton on the road.

I can see your reasoning behind the McNeese game, though i disagree and i just don't think Montana will lose at home. I saw them at the Iowa game, and though they got their butts handed to them, they did look good, were just overpowered(kinda like UNI was last year, they have some huge guys on their lines)

I Do think that the UNH and the Hampton game will be close, and i agree the UNH has been slumping, but we'll see in 5 days if that slump continues.

people seem to be giving YSU all the love for "homefield advantage"...lets keep in mind that our 2004 run was all away and this year we beat the then top team in the nation at their own homecoming and followed it up the next week by beating a highly ranked richmond at their homecoming. the stats favor JMU in this one...better defense, similar run heavy offense. not saying we definately win, but our odds are better than the 3-1 we're getting here, homefield advantage or no.
Congrats---Wanna award or something? You are failing to forget: YSU WON THE FREAKING GATEWAY CONFERENCE.... People do realize to win this conference you gotta be good. The last team to win it went to Chattanooga last year: FORGET!

Illinois State at Eastern Illinois

McNeese State at No. 2 Montana
UT-Martin at Southern Illinois
Lafayette at No. 3 Massachusetts

I don't suppose that Martin pick is a homer pick is it?

Ended up going 22-6 picking the Gateway games this year, so I'm going to take a shot at calling the playoff games. Do want to note that IMO this season's Gateway Conference was the strongest in many a moon, and think there's been some serious smoke blown by a couple of conferences.

Here goes (just the winners):

ASU- in a no contest

Furman- proving that it SHOULD have been UNI in the playoffs instead of MSU

YSU- argh! not fond of picking the Penguins as one YSU fan in particular seemed to continually belittle UNI by saying they weren't playoff worthy..hmmm? you know who you are

ISU-Birds will be focused and the OVC does NOT compare to the GFC

UM- in a no contest

SIU- in a total b****-slap of the OVC Salukis are probably playing the best they have all year right now. Talk about a good time to peak!

UMass- in a no contest

UNH-could be closer than some think

Predict 3 GFC teams onto the 2nd round and the OVC teams to be shown for what they are....just above average. Think having 3 GFC teams in the final 8 would give some ammo to my assesment that UNI would have been more worthy of the playoffs rather than either EIU or MSU.

Who knows? It'll be great to get the playoffs rolling! :hurray:

[QUOTE=appfan2008]YSU- jmu @ app this year showed me how bad they are

By the same token, showed me how bad you are for not crushing us by 20.
That wasn't serious, it was just proving the point that these are different teams now and have improved greatly.

Wanna cookie?
as Ray Lewis would say, "Stop talking and play football!"
We're coming in there with a 4-0 homecoming record this year... That means 3 of them were on the road... Watch out, because there is no way that its going to be an easy game for either team. And I'm really kinda hoping it'll be an all A10 final just to make you really wish you had accepted that cookie.

Wouldn't a Furman - JMU rematch in the semis be great? Could happen...either way, we would have to beat a team we lost to earlier in the year to get there. Just curious, where would it be played?

Maybe next year, huh? xlolx xlolx xlolx xlolx
