Coming out and scoring the first points on the board is huge, especially against a tough opponent on the road like GA Southern...

He hasn't been at QB this game yet. He's already got an 80 yard punt return for a TD, and a 40 yard WR reverse for a score. If only we knew how to use him properly.

I was at the Coaches Lunch on Friday, I believe BVG is the person to led us forward. In the past GSU has been a QB and a running back, BVG is building an entire team. It will take time but GSU will be back. Good luck to everyone in the playoffs!

I am not a coach so I am not in a position to say whether or not BVG is the man. He has a lot of work to do to turn this around. What we, as fans need to do is forget about this and move on to next season. This is the worst season in Georgia Southern history but we can't dwell on it.

Yah, I'm not trying to get into the BVG mess so disregard that comment. :D

Just wish ya'll the best in recovering (except against us next year, of course). A good GSU is good for the SOCON.

BEARS FINISH WITH A BANG
FOOTBALL • Nov 18, 2006

STATESBORO, Ga _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears closed out their first year in NCAA Division I with a bang Saturday, beating perennial power Georgia Southern 34-31 in overtime before a crowd of 11,159 at Paulson Stadium.

The Bears' defense came up with a big stop and junior placekicker James Paul of Jacksonville followed with a 25-yard field goal to win it and give the Bears an 8-3 record in their initial season at their new level.

"I'm so proud of these guys,' said UCA coach Clint Conque. "I am so proud of them. What a war that was. The displays of emotion, the big plays…

"And when our defense had to make a play, they made a play. And when James had to come in we got the kick we needed. I'm just so happy for these seniors and our football program and our school and our community.’ Â

Both kickers missed chances to win the game in regulation after UCA tied it at 31-31 with a 27-yard touchdown pass from Nathan Brown to running back Brent Grimes with 7:43 remaining. UCA's Tristan Jackson intercepted a pass at midfield, giving the Bears a shot at the win.

Paul came on and tried a 22-yarder with 4:36 remaining but missed wide right.

The Eagles (3-8) drove to the UCA 14 and faced fourth and two. Jonathan Dudley came on for a 32-yard field goal attempt but kicked a low line drive that came up short with 45.8 seconds left. UCA ran out the clock to force overtime.

The Eagles, who lost their school-record fifth consecutive game to end the season, picked up nine yards on two runs before quarterback Travis Clark was stopped for a loss of 2 by senior defensive end Jeremy Pittman, his third tackle for loss in the game. On fourth and three, Clark threw incomplete to Jayson Foster to end the Eagles' possession.

UCA took over at the 25 and got a 12-yard gain on a keeper by Nathan Brown on second down. Ross Brown got 1 yard, followed by an incomplete pass and a 3-yard gain by Brent Grimes. Paul came on and nailed the 25-yarder to win it.

"We had a great plan,' Conque said, "we made some mistakes but we overcame and we were just resilient. Big-play players stepped up and made big plays when we needed them to. It was just unbelievable.'

The big plays started with the first play of the game as the Bears opened with a 100-yard kickoff return by senior Cameron Kinard, the first of his career. Paul's point after made it 7-0 just 19 seconds into the game, but the momentum did not last long.

Following the return, the Eagles put together a solid 10-play, 72-yard drive, capped by a 1-yard touchdown run by Lamar Lewis. Jonathan Dudley's PAT tied the score at 7-7 with 11:18 remaining in the first.

After a three-play possession for UCA, Georgia Southern's Jayson Foster fielded the punt at his own 22 and returned it 78 yards for a touchdown to give the Eagles the momentum and a 14-0 lead with 8:59 left in the first quarter.

The Bears punted again after just three plays but got it right back when Ahmad Brown intercepted GSU quarterback Travis Clark at the UCA 19. Two quick passes from Nathan Brown to tight end Charles Twilley for 31 yards and to receiver Aaron Fairooz for 43 yards put the Bears at the GSU 2.

Fairooz, UCA's career leader in receiving yards as well as the holder of numerous other school records, injured his shoulder on the play and did not return.

Junior Ross Brown went up the middle and, while fighting for the end zone, lost the ball, with GSU’s Jerry Barker recovering. UCA's defense held and the Bears took over on their own 45 on the last play of the first quarter. UCA stalled and Paul missed right on a 48-yard field goal attempt.

The Eagles stretched their lead to 20-7 on a nifty 39-yard run by Foster where at least eight UCA players had a hand on him. A bad snap nullified the point after attempt.

UCA answered after Kinard had another big return from the end zone to the UCA 48. The Bears scored in 10 plays when Nathan Brown, facing fourth and goal at the four, hit Preston Echols in the left flat and the freshman from Forrest City dove into the end zone. Paul’s kick closed the gap to 20-14.

A big hit on the quarterback by UCA senior Lawrence Atkinson forced a fumble that senior defensive end Jacob Ford scooped up and returned to the GSU 17. Three plays later, Grimes scored from 14 yards out and Paul gave the Bears a 21-20 lead with 4:03 left in the half.

Yet another big play put the Eagles back in front when Clark found Darius Smiley behind the UCA secondary for a 74-yard touchdown pass on GSU’s first play of the ensuing possession. Clark took it in himself for the two-point conversion and a 28-21 lead with 3:41 left.

The Eagles opened the second half with a 37-yard field goal by Dudley for a 31-21 lead at the 12:38 mark of the third quarter. The Bears answered with a 21-yard field goal by Paul, with the Bears getting into GSC territory on a 45-yard pass from Brown to freshman David Robinson.

UCA finished with 369 yards of total offense, with Brown completing 18 of 31 passes for 279 yards and three touchdowns. Kinard had 192 yards on four kickoff returns, just 13 yards short of the school single-game record. He moved into eighth place in career return yards in his final game.

Defensively, senior linebacker Quentin Maxfield had 10 tackles including one for loss, while Jackson finished with seven tackles, one for loss, and an interception.

Wow! What a great way to end the year! I have heard from the fans of the teams UCA played this year that it is a down year for many of the teams. Well, that may be but UCA loses 21 seniors and next year just might be a tough year for us. Anyway, thanks to all of you for a great ride this year! :hurray: You have been great company on this board and I hope next year when UCA plays a full conference schedule we can tailgate at your house or ours! If your team is in the playoffs, good luck! I'll be listening and watching how the rest of this year will end.

BTW, I'm not sure about other UCA fans today, but the ones I encountered were nothing but class, before, during and after the game. Paulson Stadium is/was a great venue for us to see and play in, to see what Division 1 football is all about. As far as I know all Bear fans enjoyed their visit to the Savannah/Statesboro area.

A great way to end an 8-3 season for sure.

I dont think its such a great win for the UCA program, GSU is horrible this year during a radical transition. Its good that their team is doing well in their transition, but im not sure I would mark this one down as a great milestone. Congrats to UCA however.
