I finished watching the playoffs now and have revised my lists. Here are the top 25 for both awards coming in. There are others I considered that you can argue but I feel that the top 20 on each side of the ball are definitely listed here. I have a few players who I know didn't have Payton type numbers in 2014 but I am projecting that they will such as Carson Wentz, KD Humphries, and Paul Stanton. Same thing on defense where I put Harlan Miller, Keionta Davis, and Brent Spikes who I know all didn't have great stats but are very good players who should have better numbers in 2015.

I really like King, Ochi, and Page. All 3 of them should end up on the list. I may even move them in the top 25 and drop someone as we go over the summer.

He's listed as 11 games on the official league site so I went with that but I knew he missed time due to injury. That's why I list him as someone who doesn't have great numbers but is projected to improve on them because if healthy, he could be a 6-8 INT type guy.

Not a mistake. I listed the 25 best players on each side of the ball. Why can't an offensive lineman be listed? Are they not offensive players? OL is the most important area of an offense besides the QB. Haeg belongs. I don't list OL all the time because I believe they should be elite but he is the best returning OL in FCS and thus deserves to be listed. I know he won't win it but he certainly belongs in the top 20-25 returning offensive players of FCS. Every coach who faced him would agree with that.

We have double numbers and I think he was mistakenly listed as participating in a couple of games when he didn't dress out. If he stays healthy, he'll have a great senior year, though our other corners are pretty good too ... we're really deep on the back end.

LOL. The only reason he and others you have aren't rated with stars is because most top level FBS schools don't go into ND, SD, etc that much so the recruiting websites don't rate those players. You could argue NDSU has at least 4 or 5 players who should have been 4 star recruits back in HS.

I've told coaches down south they need to go up there and get the Billy Turners, Carson Wentz, etc from up that way and at least offer them. I think people are seeing the stomping grounds for NDSU. You guys would be top 50 in FBS, IMO, so I think more FBS schools need to go into your territory. They have beaten both badly in years past but no the last time they played both they did not beat them. In fairness, App got a lot better as the seasons went on but Scott Satterfield is going to have to start this year better than he has the last two. They have been pretty good late in the year and awful early in the year each of his first two seasons as coach.

Still though the fact remains App won 8 games in FBS and would have gone to a bowl if they had been eligible. I'll be interested to see what they do this coming year because they are finally no longer a really young team and have a solid OL, returning starter at QB with talent, and they could seriously compete to win the Sun Belt.

In Liberty's defense, they belong in FBS and they want to be there. It baffles my mind that they have not been invited. They would jump at the first invite they get.

My point is that with NDSU's success, attendance, improving facilities, etc that I think they would be a very good invite for the MAC. APP had a tough transition but the last 6 games proved we can play in the Sunbelt. And there is a difference in the leagues but its not like a SoCon team with 85 scollies couldn't compete in the Sunbelt. The reason we lost early on was Scott S. let fcs players from the transition play because of their loyalty. After the Liberty loss, he was forced to play his best players and we won 6 straight.

While I don't disagree with the fact that OL deserve the respect and consideration for the award, the fact that the media hands it out paired with the fact that the amount of attention to numbers that players utilizing the spread offense garner, it just makes it a lack of feasibility to me.

I do think that as has been mentioned in the thread the fact that he was a walk on who has become one of the best OL in the nation is a great story for any kid who wants to play at this level, and tells the story that these kids are still growing/developing and if you put them into the correct program with proper strength/conditioning training a tweener can make an absolute difference at this level.

LOL. Come on Citdog, I like you and respect you but you know good and well that is not why GSU and App left. They both had been wanting up. App raised a lot of money and enhanced their facilities. I think the Sun Belt is only about as good as the old SoCon (back in the 90s when Marshall was still in there with App, GSU, and when Furman was a power) but it's better than the current SoCon. You know they did not run. They would have gone whether they had won the league or not. Hard to talk smack to teams who have multiple national titles. I believe the only team left in the SoCon with a FCS or I-AA national title is Furman, correct?

On a serious note, has Citadel talked to GSU or App about playing anymore? I am sure they would like to get a rematch with the Citadel but I must say I also miss seeing some of those SoCon games. Would like to see them play Furman, Citadel, Chattanooga, etc. here and there still.

I'm sorry but that was a huge mistake for Scott. As you saw, he should have played the very best players up front. For the first 3-4 years in FCS the incoming recruits are going to be better than the seniors and juniors they join and thus why you guys have been so young. Your team won't really have many FBS quality seniors on it until 2016 or 2017, which could make for an interesting team for you guys.

Citdog,

For the record, I don't think Scott was the best choice for App. App and GSU will win in the Sun Belt because the league is that bad. Scott will win because he will get good players due to what App has to offer and the Sun Belt being so bad I honestly think he should be expected to finish in the top 3 every year. To me, the MVFC is equal or better than the Sun Belt. I'll be curious to see what Satterfield does this year because they should win 10 games with that schedule. Anything less and he underachieved. They will lose to Clemson and should lose to Georgia Southern.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. You feel the SoCon is best for the Citadel and some schools feel FBS is best for them. Liberty would kill to get in the Sun Belt or Conference USA but sounds like you would be totally against it if Citadel moved up?

And by the way, don't live in the past. Citadel was 5th in the SoCon in 2014. I expect top 3 in the league so maybe if you stop clinging to the couple of wins against App and GSU in their last two years and more on the present you guys would actually make the playoffs and do something relevant. You would think you won the league or some type of important trophy because of those wins. Focus on the present and not two wins you had in the past! Listen to NDSU. They don't hinge on the first title or anything. They are focused solely on the task at hand. Citadel's task at hand is to improve from last year and unless GSU or App is on your schedule they aren't any of your worry and I don't think you guys are on their minds at all until they play you again. Hopefully your players and coaches aren't still celebrating those wins like you are or else they would never win a future SoCon title.

All that matters to coaches are conference and national championship trophies. Schools that care greatly about a single game trophy from the regular season usually don't realize what true success is like. Ask NDSU if they care about a little trophy in a game with UND or something when they can lift the only one that truly matters in the history books. If you guys achieve national success you will see what I mean. Ask any coach who won a national title and they will tell you no other type of win can trump that win.

I agree some teams prefer to stay FCS while some like Citadel or Furman always will be due to the type of school they are. Nothing wrong with it. There is nothing wrong with wanting to play at the highest level or staying at a lower level and being a bigger fish.

Technically I'm sure someone wouldn't show up in the history books for that because I'm sure someone had like a 12 or 13ypc season with just 10-15 carries but as for someone who was a starter and played all year I don't know. Good question. I know it's over 8 though because I have seen a few guys average 8 and I'm pretty sure I have seen 9.

I think Vernon Adams is the clear front runner...whoops

I have two points here.

1. Vernon played this all wrong. Since he was able to do this he should have waited until after spring practice. Shaq Riddick was smart. He didn't announce his plans to leave until after spring ball at Gardner-Webb. He spent time in the weight room and got a spring practice under his belt. He then only had about 1 month of working out on his own. Vernon is now completely on his own from January through April or May. He's essentially swinging for a homerun though because if he dominates the Pac-12 and has a 1st team All-Pac 12 type season he will end giving himself a huge boost. It's just sad that players make these choices with the NFL in mind.

2. NCAA needs to change rules. Players should have to graduate by December in order to transfer, meaning they attend spring ball. Coaches should also be able to limit a player from going to a future competitor while that player is in school. Vernon should have been allowed to go to Oregon State or UCLA but not Oregon.

Does anyone know if agents or media had been in his head since 2013 telling him he should graduate early so he can move up to FBS?

I almost put Tanguay but with so many good names returning around the country I couldn't quite fit him in. I do think someone from NDSU will end up on the postseason lists but not sure who. I had like 5 of them on my 2014 postseason list but they were all seniors.

Who do the NDSU coaches believe is their best defensive player? I figured it might end up being someone who was a backup last year.

I wasn't offended at all....the Bison D is always good because of the collection of talent versus individual...and that will REALLY need to be the case next season.

Definitely will have to be. Heard some redshirts from last year and backups are going to be counted on to step up. No reason not to believe they will because NDSU has been recruiting very well the last 5 years.

Nice list. I think with Woodard finally getting to be in the 4-3 instead of the 3-4 his numbers will skyrocket. Now they won't be able to double team him as much as before. But Hall from Sammy is one to watch.

I believe DeLuca will be the favorite for postseason honors from the ndsu defensive contigent next year. He's shown the ability to play at a very high level in somewhat limited time last year.

Tanguay and CJ Smith are the other most likely selections. I think both smith and the coaching staff thought he was a miss on the all america teams this fall.

I'm going to watch more on Smith. He is one of a few corners on my list to watch more of. I dig deep in the offseason and try to project who will do well that maybe didn't get the accolades this past year. This corner class is very good so you know.

Not offended just a bit surprised. I think Tanguay and Smith are probably deserving of a mention at least. Looking forward to seeing which young guys step up and who maybe the next 4 year starters.

ESPN's Kevin Weidl believes North Dakota State junior QB Carson Wentz is "a player to watch for in 2016."
"Hard not to notice NDSU QB Carson Wentz [when studying film]," Weidl wrote. "Big strong kid with a presence. Effortless thrower." The 6-foot-6, 231-pound Wentz aces the eye test, and he's an early favorite to win FCS Player of the Year honors in 2015. During last season's 15-1 campaign, Wentz set school single-season records for passing attempts, completions, yards, and total offense per game. He threw for 3,111 yards with a 25/10 TD/INT ratio, and also broke NDSU's post-veer-option (1996) quarterback record with 642 rushing yards.
