Samford football coach dismissed
Samford University head football coach Bill Gray will not return to lead the Bulldogs next season.

“I was dismissed as head coach,” Gray said. “I don’t have much comment other than that. I’ll get with my family and see where we go from there.”

Gray was 27-33 in 5½ seasons as head coach including a 3-8 finish this year.

The Jackson, Miss., native came to Samford in 1994 as an assistant to Pete Hurt. He took over as head coach in 2001 after Hurt was dismissed following a 1-4 start and led the Bulldogs to four wins and one loss.

In Samford’s first season in the Ohio Valley Conference, Gray was named the league coach of the year after going 7-4 with a third-place finish in the conference.
