This topic comes up quite a bit during football discussions with my friends: The Citadel has had some elite coaches over the past 50 years:

Some of the more interesting:

Al Davis- Owner of the Oakland Raiders (was an assist. to Coach John Sauer in the late 50's early sixties)

Bobby Ross- head coach in early to mid 70's
Head coach for San Diego Chargers in the Super Bowl, Ross also coached Ga. Tech to the national championship in 1990. Currently Ross is head coach at Army.

Frank Beamer- asst. at The Citadel from early 70's thru 78. Current head coach at Virginia Tech.

Ralph Friedgen- asst at The Citadel from early 70's thru maybe 80. Followed Ross to Ga. Tech and San Diego Chargers, currently head coach at University of Maryland.

Mike O'Cain- asst at The Citadel, mid 70's. Was head coach at NC State, in the 90's and currently asst. at Va Tech.

These are probably the most well known.

Mark Whipple, head coach of the '98 UMass national championship team, is currently the quarterbacks coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Ron Prince played for ASU (now head coach at K State). He and former ASU assistant coach Tim Horton defeated former ASU head coach Mack Brown last week.

Sparky Woods was at ASU for a while as well as head coach. Fisher DeBerry was a coordinator.

FU has only had five coaches since the early 60's, maybe fifties.

Bob King, Art Baker, Dick Sheridan, Jimmy Satterfield, Bobby Johnson , Bobby Lamb.

Baker is a South Carolina Legend due to involvement with high school coaches and SC Football in general. He also coached at the Citadel, after Furman, and went on to East Carolina.

Jimmie Reid won three Yankee/A10 Championships in six years as UMass Head Coach.

Dick McPherson won four Yankee crowns. Went on to be Head Coach at Syracuse and lead them to the Orange Bowl and their only modern 11-0 season. Later Head Coach of the New England Patriots.

HCs at W&M have included Jim Root '72-'79, Lou Holtz '69-'71, and Marv Levy '64-'68. Assistants while I was in school included Bobby Ross and Larry Peccatiello (DC for both the Redskins and Lions). Ralph Friedgen was Laycock's first OC.

Alex Wood - Left to be the QB coach for the Vikings, then went to be offensive coordinator for the Cardinals. Any speculation that he was sleeping with Denny Greene ended when he went to Arkansas to be the RBs coach. He was an A** and a horrible coach (I think he was sleeping with Denny Greene)

Howie O'Daniels 1933-1941 1946-1947 56-33-6 pct .621 His 1933 team was undefeated and unscored upon.

Roy Hughes 1950-1961 73-37-1 pct .662 His 1953 team was undefeated and led the nation in scoring with 395 points in 9 games.

Joe Harper 1968-1981 96-43-4 pct .685 His 1980 team was the D-II National Champion and beat the I-AA National Champion Boise State.

Rich Ellerson 2001-Present 34-23 pct .596 through 2005. His team beat Montana in the playoffs in Missoula 2005.

Good catch on Hauck. I knew Axman was the QB coach up at Montana. I can never figure out Axman - left NAU a winner, (left for wife's career), but never has gotten a head coaching job since. Has assisted at UW, UCLA and now Montana.

Don Read who also coached Portland St. retired from UM & was later our AD.
Larry Donovan was fired from UM.

Jack Elway was an assistant here when John was a just a little kid. In fact John played Little Grizzly football, probably learned everything he ever knew about football there. :smiley_wi

Jim Brakefield - Installed the triple option in 1969 (for some reason it was called the "Y" at Wofford and not the Wishbone. Many of us still haven't forgiven the Appalachian Hillbillies for stealing him away after the 1969 season.

Fisher Deberry - Wofford graduate and assistant coach under Brakefield who also left for the Mountains, eventually ending up in the Colorado mountains at Air Force.

Buddy Sasser - Head coach at Wofford who left for the Tennessee Mountains at ETSU, taking his assistant Mike Ayers with him. Eventually was commisioner of the Big South conference.

Mike Ayers - Black Belt and Eddie Robinson award winner. Was head coach at ETSU, but left the mighty Bucs to go to NAIA Wofford.

Wagner head coach Jim Lee Howell hired by the New York Giants in 1954. Howell coached the Giants from 1954 - 1960, going to three NFL championship games. The Giants won the championship in 1956 when they beat the Bears 47-7.

Jim Lee Howell's assistants with the Giants included Vince Lombardi, Tom Landry and Allie Sherman. Not bad.
