The oldest I-AA rivalry in the state of Texas gets underway this coming Saturday in Huntsville, TX. This rivalry has increased off the field, especially between fans of the schools, where the two schools have the most active message boards in the state of Texas. On the field, the rivalry has increased as well, especially because for the third year in a row, the SLC title is on the line, this time the Bearkats are the ones who are fighting for a share of the title, though with a McNeese loss coupled with a Bearkat win, could be looking at not only an SLC title, but the conference's auto-bid.

Last year, the Bobcats were forced to overtime against the Kats in San Marcos. A loss would've knocked the 'Cats out of the playoffs and cost them a share of the SLC title. The 'Cats prevailed in OT and overcame turnovers to not only win a share of the SLC title, but take a trip to the I-AA semifinals following a similar path as their cross-state rival from Huntsville. The Cats would lose in the I-AA semifinals to eventual runner-up UNI.

In 2004, the Kats behind QB Dustin Long took the game from the 'Cats, who were still a longshot, but still in the mix for the SLC title. The Kats would get a share of the SLC title and go to the playoffs where they'd fall in the I-AA semifinals to Montana.

Many new faces as the rivalry continues. For the Kats, DD Terry has emerged and is coming off the second-highest rushing performance in school history against Southeastern Louisiana. Terry, a Payton Award nominee has emerged as the top RB in the conference this year and brings a dynamic to a university that has lived and died by the pass in years' past.

On the Bobcat side of things, 29 seniors have left from last year's I-AA semifinalists, but there's new blood all around who are itching for their chance in the spotlight. Will Bradley George play against SHSU or Chase Wasson? George suffered an injury in practice last week and did not play against Texas Southern, but Wasson could be the player that could change the tide for the Cats. He's coming off a school record performance where he scored 24 points. Three rushing touchdowns and one recieving score for the QB, who is fast on his legs and great with his hands (as a wide reciever that is!).

A fierce rivalry on the field! A fun one off! The SLC title on the line once more, this time for SHSU!

Bearkats by 10. Please prove me wrong Bobcats........

Bearkats use Terry to set up pass and Bobcats can't keep up getting out scored in the end.

I'll be there. Been looking forward to it all year.......

I think the big question on the Kats mind is which QB to prepare for, Wasson or George?

Main item for the Cats Defense: 1. Stop Terry (or slow him down at least)

Either way..throw out the records on this game....it could go either way for the Kats or Cats.

My prediction

Cats 21
Kats 20

good write up TT.

i was hoping to make it out to shsu for the game this year but ill have to work instead. stupid crappy part time college jobs.

either way itll be a great game. i think if the txst-shsu game keeps having playoff implications like it has, the rivalry will continue to grow out of the message boards and onto the field.

Bobcats 37
Bearkats 34 OT

I think this game is going to be full of TD's for some reason, surprising
everyone that is there. Bobcats pull it out in OT.

I just want to see a great game. The QB situation is worrying me a little right now.

GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE! GO CATS xsmileyclapx

If the Kats run the ball as much as we do, I don't see us passing 30 points, especially with our FG kicking situation (which took six points off the board against SELA).

Bobcats with Wasson at QB (if that's the case) will definitely not pass 35 either. Heck, barely passed 40 against TxSo, regardless of what backups were in...

From the Houston Chronicle...

Sam Houston has a keeper in Terry
Whitten moves the defensive sub to starting tailback, and rest is history
By MOISEKAPENDA BOWER

Last season, his first at Sam Houston State, Bearkats coach Todd Whitten kept a close eye on reserve junior linebacker D.D. Terry, whose combination of aggression and speed made him an asset on defense and special teams, and a candidate for a shift to offense.

"We knew he was probably our best athlete, and for whatever reason, I'd look up and he wouldn't be starting on defense," Whitten said.

"He'd play a little bit here and there, but he wasn't a full-time player, so I jokingly told our defense going into spring ball that if he were not a starter, I was going to bring him over to offense and let him do something."

What Terry has accomplished in his first season at tailback qualifies as something special. Last weekend at Southeastern Louisiana, Terry rushed for 278 yards and three touchdowns on 31 carries in the Bearkats' 28-23 victory. It was his second 200-yard game this season — Terry rushed for 253 yards against McNeese State on Oct. 28 — and the performance ranks second in school history to McNeil Moore's 286-yard effort in 1951.

After switching to tailback in August, missing the first game of the season and totaling only 19 carries over the next two games, Terry has a school-record 1,187 rushing yards.

Terry was named Southland Offensive Player of the Week for the third time Monday, and earned Division I-AA co-Offensive Player of the Week honors from The Sports Network. He is a Walter Payton Award finalist for I-AA Offensive Player of the Year.

"He has just gotten better and better each week," Whitten said.

"He loves to play, he's as good a young man as we have in our program, and is just a real joy to coach."

I didn't realize that six of the last nine have been decided by a TD or less. That's what we call a rivalry!

From Lufkin/Nacogdoches writer Kevin Gore...

Texas State (4-6, 2-3) at Sam Houston (6-4, 4-1), Saturday: Sam Houston just missed upsetting Texas State last season, losing 26-23 to the Bobcats, who locked up a share of the league title with the victory.

Now, the tables are turned.

Texas State's spoiler hopes could rest with junior Chase Wasson at quarterback, not wide receiver.

With starter Bradley George nursing an elbow injury, Wasson — who moved to receiver when George was named the starting quarterback earlier this season — may be under center again.

"Bradley is more of a thrower," Texas State coach David Bailiff said. "Chase is more of a runner."

Sam Houston likely will feed the ball to senior running back D.D. Terry, the conference's leading rusher with 1,187 yards.

Six of the last nine games in this series have been decided by a touchdown or less.

Dont I wish. Probably draw about 10-12k. If both schools were vying for a conference championship, I would bet this game would be a sell out. Bowers officially seats 14k, but we have had 16k in there with standing room only. If they opened up the grassy areas for seating, they could easily put 25K in that place.

Texas State (4-6, 2-3) at Sam Houston State (6-4, 4-1), 2:00

In a 31-18 loss to McNeese State on Oct. 28, Sam Houston State head coach Todd Whitten made the decision to go back to a healthy Wade Pate as the starting quarterback after Brett Hicks had led the team to a 2-0 mark in the Southland Conference. Pate managed only an 0-for-5 effort with an interception as the Bearkats fell behind 17-0 in the early going, and the insertion of Hicks back into the lineup didn’t do much in a dismal effort from the passing game that led to a loss on a night where running back D.D. Terry ran for 253 yards and two touchdowns. Hicks might not have led the Bearkats to a victory in that game, but that decision looms large with the Bearkats needing a win against Texas State and a McNeese State loss to claim the automatic spot from the Southland Conference. The passing game hasn’t been consistent with 11 touchdown passes and 13 interceptions, but the Bearkats have been riding Terry (1187 yards, 14 TD) to success in the conference. Last week, the senior running back tallied 278 yards and three touchdowns for a 28-23 victory at Southeastern Louisiana in a must-win game. He has five 100-yard efforts in the last six games, and averages 6.3 yards per carry. Those numbers should stack up nicely against the Texas State defense, which is giving up more than 150 yards per game on the ground and doing even worse against the pass. The Bobcats can move the ball as well, and can probably produce against the Sam Houston State defense. The outcome of the game will probably come down to the turnover battle, since both teams create and commit a lot of turnovers with equal numbers of 21 turnovers forced and 24 given up. Sam Houston State gave Texas State all it could handle with the conference title on the line last year, and the Bobcats would love to return the favor and then some by knocking the Bearkats out of contention here. They can do it by forcing Hicks into miscues and winning the turnover battle, but I’ll take the best player on the field and the team that has more at stake. Terry has dominated over the second half of the season, and the Bearkats will put the game in his hands to get the win and then hope for a McNeese State loss later in the day.

Prediction: Sam Houston State 28, Texas State 23

Houstonian article about the game.

Chance at glory
Bearkats take on Texas State for SLC championship

For the third year in a row, a Southland Conference title is on the line when Sam Houston State and Texas State-San Marcos meet in football this Saturday at 2 p.m. at Bowers Stadium

In 2004, the Bearkats defeated the Bobcats 27-9 in Huntsville to clinch an SLC co-championship with Northwestern State. Last year in San Marcos, the Bobcats had to go to ovetime to defeat SHSU 26-23 to earn a co-championship with Nicholls State. This Saturday, Sam Houston can earn its second Southland title in three years with a victory over the Bobcats.

Now, in 2006, if Sam Houston defeats the Bobcats Saturday, the Bearkats will be Southland champions for the second time in three years.

Sam Houston even has an outside shot at the NCAA Division I-AA national playoffs. If the Bearkats defeat Texas State-San Marcos and McNeese State downs Nicholls State Saturday, both are co-champions. By virtue of their 31-18 victory over the Bearkats, the Cowboys would earn the Southland Conference automatic NCAA playoff berth.

But, a Sam Houston victory combined with a McNeese loss gives the Bearkats the title by themselves and the league's automatic playoff bid.

i never said it wasn't Texas State University-San Marcos. i think i know the official name of my own university. after all, it will be on my diploma.

just being picky (as journalists should!) in stating that we are not Texas State-San Marcos, TSSM, or whatever else...I don't care what you guys call us. fact of the matter is that you guys are the only ones that call us that. i'm fine with it. whatever you gotta do to make yourself feel better.

anyway, enough about this. how much are tickets and where do the visiting fans sit? that's all i'm worried about.

Can't be any worse than the PVA&M attendance of 1796 for a game at home against Alcorn St or 3281 for a home game against Alabama St...xcoffeex

Thank you for giving us Panthers 411 on 2 of our home games. :) I see you "conveniently" ~snickering~ didn't give us the full attendance for ALL PV home games played. Wonder why? :bang:

And, thanks yet again for bringing up PVAMU in a thread that's about TxStU-SM and SHSU. You have SWAC in you but you refuse to let the "tiger" out (pun intended). lol

Lastly, we played before 53+K this past fall. Has SHSU ever in their entire existence played another I-AA in front of an announced crowd like that? No, going to a I-A and being their whipping boy doesn't count because most I-Aers have the drawing power that I-AAers do not. :)

19k student enrollment...more like 16,300...though SHSU will approach 20k fast, regardless of whatever happens with that UH satellite campus in NW Houston which will negatively impact PVA&M if built.

Student fee only goes towards paying for scholarships, nothing more. SHSU is in the midst of a capital campaign right now, some of the $$$ of which will go towards athletics.

SHSU is a growing institution and is doing what it takes to succeed, even if they are outspent by TXST in the range of 30-40%.

The Bearkats season average is not too far off of the highest PVA&M attended game and that game was highly attended thanks to those visiting Jaguar fans more than likely. Same goes for the Pine Bluff game.

SHSU should get good attendance for TXST game, especially since 'Cats will travel well and SHSU should have a good crowd with SLC title on the line.

Once you began talking smack about SHSU, you brought PVA&M back into it. Of course, you have no reason to smack talk an institution your school refuses to play. PVA&M is anti-SLC in football, probably due to the tail-whoopings your institution has faced. Makes financial sense. You'd get more $$$ from playing SHSU in Huntsville than hosting Edward Waters at the Prairie View YMCA.

From the San Marcos Daily Record...

------------
Bobcats want to end on a winning note
By Randy Stevens
Sports Editor

With no conference title or postseason berth on the line, one might think there’s not much for the Texas State Bobcats to play for this weekend at rival Sam Houston State.

Of course, they could relish the spoiler role, as a Bobcat win at Huntsville would definitely spoil the Bearkats’ Southland Conference title aspirations. But that’s not consistent with head coach David Bailiff’s philosophy. In order to get better, Bailiff feels a team has to worry more about itself that anything else.

“We’re not looking at ourselves as spoilers. We just want to go up there, compete and do our best,” Bailiff said. “We want to win this game because it’s good for this program and it would be really nice to carry a two-game winning streak into the offseason.”

Texas State fell out of contention for the SLC title with its 21-19 loss to Nicholls State Nov. 2, but was able to bounce back with a 41-21, non-conference win over Texas Southern last weekend. The Bearkats, however, are assured a share of the conference title with a win over Texas State and could win it outright if they beat the Bobcats and Nicholls State scores an upset at McNeese State. If both Sam Houston and McNeese lose, it would force a three-way tie for the title with Stephen F. Austin. McNeese holds the tiebreaker over both schools and would claim the automatic playoff berth in both tie situations.

I don't have the time or patience to address each one of your Panther concerns Texas Terrorist. lol

It was announced @ the game that 53K something was in attendance. Now, what's reported to the ncaa and SWAC officials? That's on whomever does the bean counting. :) I would HOPE lol that you all can draw @ least 10K for your home football games. Your enrollment is fast approaching 20K and has been in that >13K range since the 80s if memory serves correct. When I graduated PVAMU in '88, our enrollment was a WHOPPING 3,876. And, we were the LARGEST 4 yr enrollment the school ever had! Traditionally/historically, enrollment was around the 2K mark @ PVAMU. So, tell me... how does a lil' school damn near kick a bigger school in the ass regarding attendance during athletic events?

I can't argue w/ you on the competitivity tip. SHSU would maul our football team and basketball teams too! We don't recruit the caliber of athlete that you guys do and we certainly don't get ncaa delinquets (txfers) @ the rate you guys do as well. lmao Winning doesn't mean that much to us that we'd sacrifice our integrity. :smiley_wi

Unfortunately, work commitments do not allow easy travels especially since I have programs to attend to on Sundays and even Saturday evenings at various points. Pre-game show...In the Zone with Todd Whitten

TW talks about how it's warmer this week in Huntsville and that it was great to get the sixth win to clinch a winning season.

TW talks about being proud of seniors leading the team and having success on the road in key games. Says team has responded in a positive way.

TW says Kats missed a few tackles and SELA needs credit for QB's gutsy performance. Says SELA made some plays. SELA's Fitzpatrick has a bright future according to TW.

TW says DD Terry keeps getting better and better. Says he's the reason the Kats are where they are and he is a fun to coach kid. TW says bus rides home are fun on the way home after a win.

TexasTerror
November 18th, 2006, 01:37 PM
TW says the Kats have a chance to do something positive. Talks of eight turnovers between UCA and McN games at home. Very thankful to be where they are and a chance for a title, possible playoff berth.

TW says Shane Richburg and Patrick Robinson are out in the LB corps. Carlton Cobey and Byron Richmond will play some LB today, moving in from the safety. Says they'll make some plays. Cobey was out with a hamstring issue for two, three weeks earlier. TW says he thinks Richmond will be fine and he may be one of the better LBs that Sam has. TW believes Richmond is a leader and that he'll make a lot of plays today.

TexasTerror
November 18th, 2006, 01:47 PM
TW says it's the best senior group he's been apart of, saying they prepared and worked hard, leading by example. Says Kats had fun practicing football and winning makes things easier, but he can't say enough about'em. TW says you'd like to have between 15-20 seniors each year, making it balanced. It's a great group and TW will miss'em dearly.

TW says most people had SHSU picked at the bottom. Says it's a credit to the players and that the players practiced hard, competed well on Saturday and that's it's a good feeling to see SHSU play well. TW felt that beating Nicholls was where he saw the Kats as a team able to compete and overcoming the bump in the road of winning away from Huntsville against Missouri St.

TW says Kats have been focused and that if you practice well, you play well. TW says the players are informed about the McNeese/Nicholls situation and that McN will probably be the favorite, but it's common knowledge that anyone can beat anyone, so it's not a stretch for a Nicholls win.

TW says anyone can beat anyone. He remembers watching McN turnovers against TxSt and that TxSt beat the conference leader, it's been that kind of year. TW says it doesn't make any difference on if the Cats play George or Wasson. Says Wasson can beat you with his feet, George can beat you with his arm (pocket passer). Says you need a plan either way and the Kats have to deal with whatever is on the field. TW says when Wasson is QB, they really got two starters out - George at QB and Wasson at WR. Says Wasson is a big play guy.

TW says Cats will be in 4-2-5 and that they are athletic, aggressive and can tackle. Says TxSt lacks underclassmen on the defensive side. TW recalls TxSt/SHSU '05 and that it was quite a scare.

Keys for a SHSU win is defensively, Kats have to adjust quickly and do a good job based on QB. Offensively,if the Kats take care of the ball, they're tough to beat and giving'em nothing easy.

That's a wrap...let's go get'em Kats!

Defeating UCA would've done no good for an at-large berth. UCA counts as Div II for scheduling and RPI across the board. Doesn't make a difference outside of the Kats could've been 7-3 heading into this one, which would've looked nice! :)

Unable to stop 'Cats on third and very long (talking 9+ yards) on atleast two, if not three occassions...

Inability to kick meant Kats had to go for it on 4th and short from just outside the red zone...

Kats are giving too many yards up to your awful punt return unit...

Brandon Perry got hurt and Michael Malone isn't even playing...two starting wideouts...

Wasson is possessed to redeem himself at SHSU.

The game would have been tied at half two years ago if he had not fumbled at the goal line. Changed the complexion of the game.

Some Sam posters actually said he should not be playing at the college level. Of course, those type of posters will not show up to take it like a man as they choke on it as he crams it down their throat.

Terry will be SLC MVP Offensive POY this year, it could be Zwinggi next year.

Congrats Bobcats on your win...

SHSU could not capitalize on opprotunities and the 'Cats made those two great goal line stands. You'd think the Cats would've broken on atleast one of those two times...

The special team woes of the Kats showed today. Due to our inability to kick FGs this year (and even PATs unfortunately), we had to go for it on fourth downs, when in past years (with All-American Lance Garner), the Kats could've taken a bit of a larger lead. The punt returns by the 'Cats in this game, considering your average, also hurt us.

Bobcats secondary stood out strong. Take away the DD Terry TD catch and the Cats really dominated the passing game of the Kats. Hicks could never get anything going in the passing game. Not sure if part of that had to do with Malone being out and Perry being shaken up throughout the game. He bled from the mouth?

Nice punt return there at the end by Harris, who probably cemented himself as the #1 punter returner in the nation this year, but of course, after being on the otherside of this last week (against SELA), Kats kicked an onside kick.

Props to Stan the Man on his game. He's a great back and will take over the reins next year of All-SLC RB more than likely unless we get surprised somewhere in the SLC as another RB emerges. He's a stud...

Not sure either side could be happy with the officiating...again, great game 'Cats. Look forward to both of our squads needing a win in the season finale for the title next year once more in San Marcos! Can we make it four years in a row?!? ;)

At least Sam Houston fans don't have to agonize over likely missing a playoff spot because of the loss. It's always possible that McNeese might've played differently against Nicholls State with the pressure of having to win to get into the tournament on, but it looks like they were going to win. They matched up with Nicholls State a lot better than I thought they would. Score was a little deceptive...inflated by turnovers (though I understand that's a Nicholls State characteristic this year)...but McNeese did look like it had a little bit of an edge regardless.

SHSU fans will be agonizing over the decision to start Pate over Hicks against McNeese. SHSU 'won' the game with Hicks in but were playing awful with Pate in the game, who was obviously not ready to contribute. Kat fans couldn't believe that one when it happened.

With Hicks, Kats possibly beat McNeese and it's a different situation heading into Bowers for the game against the 'Cats. Still can't believe SHSU lost as many as they did at home this year...

A few thoughts on the game:

1. This is the first time I can say that I am not angry at the coaching staff. They had the boys ready to play, the first quarter is proof of that. The Kats showed up for the first quarter, I don't know who showed up for the next three.

2. The big hit on Perry did two things. One, it woke the bobcat defense up. Two, it pretty much took Perry out of the game. He was dropping passes left and right after that.

3. Three of our key players were out in the second half. DD Terry, Brandon Perry (played but was not there mentally) and Michael Malone. That hurt big time.

4. I don't think the QB question for the bobcats did much to confuse the Kats. The defense just didn't play the last three quarters, they were run all over.

Congrats to the bobcats and here's hoping that the Cowboys represent well in the playoffs.
