Virginia Tech Releases Future Non-Conference Football Schedules
Opponents, dates & locations through 2011 announced

BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech Athletics Department released Thursday its non-conference football schedules through 2011, highlighted by the announcement of an eight-game series with East Carolina University.


In each of the six years, four non-conference games will be played. Besides East Carolina every season, the following teams will be on Tech's schedule: Appalachian State (2011, Blacksburg), Bowling Green (2008, Blacksburg), Central Michigan (2010, Blacksburg), Cincinnati (2006, Blacksburg; 2009, Cincinnati, Ohio), Furman (2008, Blacksburg), Kent State (2006, Blacksburg), LSU (2007, Baton Rouge, La.), Marshall (2009, Blacksburg; 2011, Huntington, W.Va.), Ohio University (2006, Athens, Ohio; 2007, Blacksburg), Syracuse (2010, Syracuse, N.Y.; 2011, Blacksburg), Western Michigan (2010, Blacksburg), William & Mary (2007, Blacksburg) and Wisconsin (2008, Madison, Wis.; 2009, Blacksburg).


The Hokies and Pirates will play each year from 2006-2013, including four games at Blacksburg, three at ECU and a neutral contest at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, N.C., in 2007. The Pirates and Hokies will renew a regional rivalry which peaked with seven meetings during a nine-year span from 1990 to 1998. Virginia Tech leads the overall series, 8-4, last playing in 2000, a 45-28 win for the Hokies at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.


Last November, Virginia Tech, in conjunction with the Atlantic Coast Conference office, released its conference opponents and sites through 2015. Exact dates on those games will be available at future dates.

2011! Ouch, isn't that the year we make contact. No, that was 2010.

Anyway, that's a bit far off to schedule imo. who knows what the college football landscape will even look like.

Can you really say ECU is a rival of Tech...I don't think so.

They should be, both schools are are less than 2.5 hours on a bus away. Sure as hell is a better rivalry than VaTech against Boston College or FSU, or some other far fetched ACC team.

Those are conference games, so they shouldn't be rivalries, I'm just saying that it isn't much of rivalry has no historical context at all, but regional, but that's still a stretch. Hell, JMU is more of a rival to ECU than Tech (a former CAA member) but then again ECU is scared to play us cause they know they would lose...

Actually, VT in Blacksburg, VA and ECU in Greenville, NC are five hours away by driving. I think VT did not want to schedule JMU after what happened to Kevin Jones in 2003 when JMU went down to Blacksburg. I too have heard that JMU has tried to schedule ECU and that ECU has not been willing to play the Dukes.

Yay for VT! A I-A team willing to accept only 2 non-conference home games in a season. I just can't see Purdue ever accepting 2 of the 4 non-conference games being on the road, I feel they will always play 3 of the 4 at home even if it means scheduling subpar opponents (Indiana State, Ball State). While games of "regional" interest, they stopped being interesting when none of them have ever been close.

Anyways... Nice job VT getting the home-and-home series with Syracuse, Wisconsin, Cincinnatti, and giving Miami (OH) a chance as well.

Who will be the first I-AA to get a I-A to travel or at a neutral site?
