David Letterman's alma mater is coming off a fine 10-3 campaign which ended in a 23-20 loss to Arkansas State in the GoDaddy Bowl. Colgate suffered through an injury-riddled 4-8 season and debuts a new coach in Dan Hunt. One plus for Colgate is that a lot of underclassmen saw action. Discuss.

Ball State is a quality team, should be a favorite in the MAC, the one positive is that with them playing Iowa the following week they may look past this game a bit.

Very tough opener and I will be happy if we just avoid injuries. yes a win would be fantastic, but not expected.

They'd kick the crap out of anybody in the SoCon, so I guess that makes them invincible!

Ball State should be in the fbs 'playoff'.

85 scholarship club facing a 30 scholarship club makes the 85 scholarship club a quality outfit as far as I am concerned.

Go Gate...

As I'm sure you know - I don't think there's any way Lembo will let his team look past this one!! If anyone respects Colgate, it's Pete.

With Georgetown's former head coach running the D, can't imagine an FBS school more familiar with Colgate. I think Colgate will be pretty solid this year at most positions. With scholarship classes coming in, kids are getting bigger/stronger/faster. Seems like QB is the biggest question mark right now. Colgate's offense has been solid for a long time, will be interesting to see if they can come up with a defense that works as well.

Pistol Pete will be BSU's ears all week about his experience with the Red Raiders. Still, you can only talk to kids so much and they still read the internet and listen to the all the smoke that gets blown up their asses, so you never know if they end up 'looking past' the Raiders. Would be great for CU to knock them off, and then have BSU beat Iowa!

Coach Biddle's always struggled in openers. I don't expect Colgate to win, but I hope they play well.

I was aware yes. We are also 0-1 vs Wyoming. How that is germane to the subject of the REALLY tough fbs games the patsy league plays is beyond me. fordham celebrated when they BARELY defeated TEMPLE. Temple is one of the worst programs in the country.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Temple came out swinging against Wyoming, jumping to a 21-0 lead in the first half of the Gildan New Mexico Bowl on Saturday. But when Wyoming freshman Brett Smith (http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/516959/brett-smith) threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Josh Doctson (http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/516301/josh-doctson) with 37 seconds remaining in the first half, Temple quarterback Chris Coyer (http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/482161/chris-coyer) feared that Wyoming found a spark.

"We knew they had swung the momentum their way. It was a big touchdown for them," Coyer said.
Then, moments later, Coyer responded with 61-yarder to Rod Streater (http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/500979/rod-streater) to give the Owls a 28-7 lead.
It was never close again. Bernard Pierce (http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/482169/bernard-pierce) ran for two early touchdowns and Coyer threw for 169 yards and the touchdown to help Temple overwhelm Wyoming 37-15 in the New Mexico Bowl -- the first bowl game of the season.

The last time a new Colgate FB coach opened with an FBS opponent, it was Rutgers 68, Colgate 6 at Giants Stadium in 1993.

If anyone cares, the coach was Edward Sweeney, who was hog-tied for three years as Neil Grabois tried to kill the Colgate program.

While I don't think that will happen here, Ball State has a nice club and good talent coming back.

That's...not a pleasant omen. Never though Go...gate would be the dark cloud on a Colgate thread ;)

This is probably the most unsure I've been about a Colgate team since I started watching in 2003 (and of course had nothing to go off). I'm going to be quietly confident on the season as a whole. Lots of injuries in 2013 meant lots of guys got playing time, including Melville (or Finelli) at QB, which should shorten the overall learning curve. Really, I think the offense as a whole will be just fine. Ball State has given up an average of 30 ppg over the last 3 years, though that has decreased substantially over that time. If we get out of there with more points than at Air Force last year, I'll feel pretty good going forward.

I am especially curious to see this new defense at work. There are playmakers on the roster, but depth has been lacking. I want to see good form tackling, as I suspect they will be doing a lot of it...

Football is back :) Let's Go 'Gate!

Well, Ball State jumped out to a 13-0 lead and won, 30-10. Colgate showed some promise but also that there is work to be done.

Next for the Red Raiders: at Delaware, defeated 62-0 today by Pittsburgh.

I watched most of the game. Colgate's defense definitely looked better, definitely bigger up front. Offensively, their QB seemed to lack arm strength and team speed/playmakers really weren't there. Ball State is a good team but you could tell they're missing their All-Time QB....

Definitely not trying to be a dark cloud, and Colgate fared much better against Ball State than that dreadful 1993 evening against Rutgers when Doug Graber ran up the score.

Next week against Delaware could be interesting.
