View Full Version : Seeded team most likely to lose in the round of 16

Hi all,

Looking at the 8 byes, I was wondering which ones have the toughest hurdle to the quarterfinals. The way I see it, Maine might have the toughest road...having just gotten beat around by New Hampshire. We likely will have the Wildcats at home, but I think its a coin flip at best and it will be a battle in Orono. I think SELA and McNeese has the other toughies (relatively speaking). I don't see any of the other 5 seeded teams having any trouble at all advancing.

Thoughts?

Maybe,

EWU has the 2 strongest teams in their play in. NAU or SDSU could give them a problem. SHSU and Fordham are both missing their QB's or I'd say they had a good chance.

Towson obviously....

But also I bet SDSU/NAU winner gives Eastern Washington a game. Don't know if they'll be able to win in the end but those are two good teams.

Bell played in the second half of the UCA game, threw 63 times for 300 yards and 4 tds. He will play Saturday without a doubt.

So your wrong on both, as usual.

Montana against Coastal or SDSU/NAU against EWU simply because I think Coastal has the guns to beat Montana in a shootout and SDSU/NAU are two of the best teams playing this Saturday so EWU is included more due to their draw than any weaknesses they have.

Yeah, but to bad you forgot some really important stats.
Did you win--nope.
What was his completion percentage--less than 50%.
How many ints did he have--4
What was the average pass play yardage-- 5.3 yards
So tell us why any team should be worried about Bell playing.

Didn't need to win. In the end it lit a fire under the team's ass, showed Bell's heart and character and we made the playoffs anyway.
At least 10 dropped balls. (seriously xpissedx)
3 interceptions were clearly receiver's faults. xshakefistx

This team may come short, but it wont be because of Bell or lack of talent. It will be from mistakes. That can be fixed. No SLC officials and a healthy Flanders will certainly help too. Everyone's 0-0 at this point. The Kats have a fresh start and a decent path to Fargo.xawesomex

I really do not know how McNeese won 10 games this year much less got seeded. Our defensive secondary is weak and if our QB is just off a little bit, we will get clocked.

I agree that BCU or Coastal are definitely at a disadvantage playing in the west (time zone differences) in the cold, snowy conditions of Montana.

I think the second rounders most in jeopardy are Towson, and Maine. I believe Maine will gain revenge against UNH, but it's gotta sting knowing they pretty handled you the first time. I think Fordham is better than we think and will get into the 'Elite Eight'.

I wouldn't be so sure about a team like Coastal having no chance in Missoula in December. This is what happened the last team a team from South Carolina came into WaGriz for a playoff game (against a better UM team as well): http://espn.go.com/ncf/boxscore?gameId=273280149

Extreme cold and/or snow would play a factor but if it's normal weather for Missoula in early December it'll be highs in the low 30s. Most forecasts are wrong 48 hours out so I don't trust a 10+ day forecast outlook anyway.

Coastal appears to have the talent and coaching to give us a good game, but unless they roll out the TO I don't think they're gonna pull a Wofford on us. Could turn into a pretty entertaining shootout-type game, though.

Idk, it's not like Coastal is an air raid offense. They were 6th in the FCS at 266 rush yards per game which was only 3 less ypg than Wofford and 7 less than The Citadel this year. Montana was 39th at 186 ypg on the ground. Conversely, CCU averaged only 228 yards through the air while Montana averaged 258. If anything Montana is more dependent on the pass than Coastal is. I'd agree that Montana should still be favored in a potential matchup with Coastal but I think Coastal has the chops, on offense at least, to give the Griz all they can handle and more.

To answer the question:

Montana - Just for the sheer fact that they have shown they can be hot/cold depending on which Griz team shows up
Maine - UNH will give them a game
Towson - Ride the hot hand Fordham with their QB back
EWU - I could see SDSU taking it to them
SELA - SHSU healthy enough? Revenge factor?

NDSU and EIU shouldn't be close and I don't see either team beating McNeese (good draw for them).

You're probably right. I haven't seen B-C or CC play this year.

I'm making the assumption based on B-C game against Delaware State, were they beat them 21-7 and they come from a traditionally weak conference. IMO, the Griz will beat either one.

Now, I'm not sure how things are done in the PL, but here in Fargo, fans can definitely help the team out..

I'm not saying, but I'm just saying that crowd noise can most certainly mess an opponent up (and it definitely has before). I'd like to think we, as fans, have accounted for enough false starts that we saved the team from a couple touchdowns the past few years...

Everything about Huntsville is recycled....it was named after Huntsville, Alabama...and as far as a college there, you guys got a great deal on the old Austin College property after they decided to move to a more favorable location...and who could blame them???

As for historic SIGNFICANCE, Huntsvegas pales in comparison to Nacogdoches, the home of Stephen F. Austin. The Freedonia History alone dwarfs anything tied to Huntsville..

I'll give you this though....Huntsville is a PERFECT place for the things that it's good at: Disposing of human waste. It's optimally situated as a bowel and bladder emptying spot if you're traveling to Houston from Dallas or Shreveport, and its where Texas sends convicts to die...

Based on recent history, McNeese has a pretty solid shot at bowing out in their first game. Unfortunately, I almost default to that line of thinking at this point because of that......and our defense is Jeckyl and Hyde.

You could be correct but the Triple Option was the downfall for the Griz (and their inept O) in that game. Wofford tried to throw early and threw 2 pics giving Montana the ball in + territory both times and they could do nothing. IMO Montana will fare better against a traditional running team.

Many Thanks............................................ .................................................. ........This appears to be some sort of Mid-West and Southern Disease....Keep your watching the Man-Boooob-tube.....Football, Nascar,Jewelry tv, Duck Dynasty....Fish Ticklin..card playing, bingo, chitlin...crappie, brisket....car auctioning, Cable Guy,... asses where they belong and keep on keeping the great outdoors un-cluttered..(Was not hard to wonder why it is that I didn't see many people on bicycles) But not so fast........Here in California, the same thing is happening. Back in my school days we had maybe one or two token fat people in class. Now... take a look around.

The other day 3 school kid boys, probably about 11, or 12 years old..(all fat)were probably walking home from school, had stepped off the curb to cross the street. So I stopped for them. They proceeded to walk across the street in front of me as they were playing on their little hand-held computer Gameboys...ALL of them were totally oblivious that I had taken the proper courtesy of stopping for them to cross the street. These three were so into their games that they just kind of dribbled across the road....about as slow as they could go...paying no attention to the truck that had just stopped to let them pass. Back when I was a kid, and now as an adult, you give respect to an automobile stopping for you to cross. A lot of things, including weight has changed this country, and not for the good.

Used to be a time when I couldn't understand why more people didn't embrace the fun of a bicycle, and was a bit put off by such.
Now I cynically embrace the fact that so many trails are seldomly used any more, and it's a lot easier now days to find secluded a riding area.

Go figure...

Thanks Again

Well thats not it....all the illegal imigrants have taken those jobs! Most people are too lazy to do them anyways and would prefer to get that gubermant paycheck over working for just a tiny bit more money!

Most people are moving here because we have no state income tax, low cost of living, affordable real estate, and one of the nations best economies. Quite a few huge corporations have been moving their headquarters here in the last few years as well. Cat Diesel, Exxon, and Ratheon are just a couple recent ones. Hmmm....you might want to do some research there smart guy!! Even with our "Massive Property Tax" (which by the way is the 14th highest in the nation) Texas is ranked #6 in the country for states with the LOWEST tax burden on residents. Oh and by the way we were the #3 ranked in total taxes collected. Maybe thats why our states budget is so far in the green??

6. Texas
> Taxes paid by residents as pct. of income: 7.9%
> Total state and local taxes collected: $86.50 billion (3rd highest)
> Pct. of total taxes paid by residents: 63.8% (15th lowest)
> Pct. of total taxes paid by non-residents: 36.2% (15th highest)
Texas' state and local tax burden of 7.9% was unchanged in 2010 compared to 2009, and has been below 8% since 1996. The low tax burden was helped by the fact that individuals are not required to pay any income tax. Texas had a 6.25% sales tax, 13th highest of all states, and property tax collections of $1,461 per capita were 14th highest. Because it is the second most populous state, Texas still collected over $86 billion in state and local taxes, more than all states except California and New York.

#1 EWU - Both Jacks teams provide better defenses. SDSU can really burn a team if Rabbits gets ahead in score, although may not have a great ability to get back into a game if down.

#2 Towson - Fordham has a well oiled offensive team. Rams could win a shoot-out.

#3 Maine - Always tough to get 2 wins in a row against a rival. But each team has seen the other, and knows each other, so will take some trickery, and turnovers to earn the W.

Hmm.... But somehow were in the bottom 5 or 6 as fare as welfare recipients?? If we're regressive and the poor are suffering soooo much then why do we have so many less people asking for handouts! The fact that you think the poor suffer more than the rich is ludicrous! You buy a bigger property you pay more tax! Smaller property pays less tax! What I pay for my $205,000 house per year is substantially less than what my parents pay on their $750,000 house. We all pay the same on sales tax. People that rent dont pay any property or income tax! How does that hurt the poor?

The biggest difference between SHSU and UM is that Sammy hired a great coach that turned them into a championship contender. Don't hold your breath waiting for them to fail.

UM's coaching situation is pretty ****ed with Father Time putting all the question marks on any future.

Don't be an ignorant ****. I'd say Delaney has done a pretty admirable job of coming off the golf course after a very good coach, who wanted to retire at Montana, took the fall for a chicken **** university president.

Good for him. He will be 75 years old when the next freshman class graduates. Doesn't instill a lot of future stability on the team.

You're correct, the Montana program will still be in a state of flux for several years. But isn't that a testament to the program, that we can still be a contender despite that working against us?

Agreed...but for a different reason!

Just remember Wagner over Colgate last year.

SHU is in a similar position, and being the road team is not that big a deal since Rose Hill is only a couple of hours from Fairfield by car.

Though I believe Fordham is a better club and will prevail, one never knows. The late George Halas said that ANY team good enough to reach a playoff game is good enough to win that game. I hope both teams play to their potential and that it is a great football game.

Towson obviously....

But also I bet SDSU/NAU winner gives Eastern Washington a game. Don't know if they'll be able to win in the end but those are two good teams.
Both would definitely give us a game, but our offense is just so potent and fast striking, that I don't think either could keep up with us because of how they move the ball. They might chew up clock and score against us running the ball, but our defense will get a few stops or force a turnover or two, which puts their offense in a bind to keep up with ours. If they don't turn the ball over and we do, it will come down to the wire like PSU. If they do turn the ball over and we don't, it'll be a blowout.

To get this derailed and train wrecked thread back on track, I am worried that McNeese might be the seeded team to lose. Especially, if we end up playing Samford. We lost our best cover corner against Lamar with a knee injury and the redshirt freshman that took his place was pretty muched blackened around the edges before they took him out. And his replacement, who did a little better job, was a true freshman.

I hear they are shuffling some players around in the secondary but we are a little banged up there in addition to losing the CB. I'm worried about our pass defense.

If I'm McNeese, I would be very concerned with a potential Samford match up, but from everything I've read on their message board, they're pretty banged up right now. Sounds like they're down a couple of D-linemen and their RB, Fabian Truss, has been hurt. QB is a sixth year senior and their WRs are very good.

I believe McNeese will roll either Samford or Jack St handily and I also think they match up well with EWU. That would be a fun game to watch. History says McNeese struggles up north but this is an entirely new McNeese team and coach that and when it comes to football history past 4 years is garbage. Only thing it's good for us recruiting! McNeese has the athletes in the secondary to run with EWU and offensive they would score at will.

As far as our side I don't really see us having trouble with SUU. We are getting healthy and in most peoples eyes as well as my own our extremely fortunate to be in the playoffs and our boys will be looking to prove themselves deserving. Anytime you get a matchup with a conference foe its usually going to be much more of a dogfight as the teams know each other so well. I always hated rematches when we won the first game. Whoever wins I see Maine on the schedule next. I don't see them losing to New Hampshire twice in a row. Not really familiar with what Maine does but IMO that conference is pretty weak in general and SELA shouldn't have any issues with them and if we play the football we are capable of we shouldn't either!

I predict an SLC opponent in the Fargo Dome and McNeese going to Eastern Ill. No matter what happens with the Kats I would be elated to get 2 teams in the semis! Honestly would love to see how SELA matches up against the bison but of course would be much happier if the Kats got to try for a 3rd time!

Depends on Samford's injury situation ... we played them back in September, and the SU team we saw matches up very well with McNeese ... but if Truss can't play and they're missing a couple of those huge D-linemen, they may not get past JSU. But talent-wise, they were as good as any FCS team we played this year ... not a team to take lightly by an stretch.

As for us, we're taking em one at a time ... best way to ruin a good season is to look ahead ... everybody is dangerous in the playoffs.

EWU seems to have the toughest matchup. Maine might have problems since they could be looking at a rematch of the UNH game they just lost.

Of the 110 brackets that have been submitted to the playoff challenge that I'm hosting, Towson was predicted to win its first game 70.27% of the time, which is the lowest value of any seeded team, with all of the projected losses occurring against Fordham. The next lowest value is Southeastern Louisiana with a 71.17% projected winning percentage in its first game.

Evidently, there are a lot of people with no clue about SLU.

To be fair. A lot of those people probably have SHSU winning a rematch so it's less about SLU and more about Sammy as a seasoned playoff team.

Didn't need to win. In the end it lit a fire under the team's ass, showed Bell's heart and character and we made the playoffs anyway. At least 10 dropped balls. (seriously xpissedx)3 interceptions were clearly receiver's faults. xshakefistxThis team may come short, but it wont be because of Bell or lack of talent. It will be from mistakes. That can be fixed. No SLC officials and a healthy Flanders will certainly help too. Everyone's 0-0 at this point. The Kats have a fresh start and a decent path to Fargo.xawesomexSo what you are saying is your WRs suck so it really does not matter if Bell plays or not.

It matters.
Senior with deep playoff experience vs RS freshmen with no College game experience. Bell is a winner no question about that, I just hope he's close to 100%. Our playoff hopes rely very much on a healthy Bell.

That appears to be correct. Of the (now 116) brackets, 93 projected a matchup between SHSU and SLU, with SLU projected to win 65.59% of the time in that scenario

If bell wouldn't have gone down that game could have very easily gone the other way. We had two drives inside the 20 stall (one being the drive bell got hurt on) that if we scored on both we likely win the game. I'm not saying I would expect us to win that matchup if we get past SUU but I sure as heck wouldn't be shocked.

I doubt it seriously. You were down 2 TDs already when he got hurt...obviously you would have had a better chance with Bell than with backups but we went conservative when he went down. Plus our front seven was dominating your O-line...we had 6 sacks in 2nd half. Had we needed to push the pedal to match scores, we could have...plus we left points on the field as it was.

I just watched the replay and I agree. The first half was one game, and the second half was domination by SELA. Bell wouldn't have made a difference.

Agreed SLU is making a run very similar to our 2011 run.

I hope we can pull out against them though.

If Nebrich is healthy, Towson is in for a rough day. His presence opens up space for FU's excellent RB, Koonce. Two headed monster for the FU offense.

Montana against Coastal or SDSU/NAU against EWU simply because I think Coastal has the guns to beat Montana in a shootout and SDSU/NAU are two of the best teams playing this Saturday so EWU is included more due to their draw than any weaknesses they have.Montana has had slow starts but unless Coastal can handle the cold they won't have much of a chance weather supposed to be in single digits this week
