View Full Version : Wofford @ App St.

The Mountaineers put there 21 game home winning streak on the line this coming weekend against the Wofford Terriers. Will this be the fifth game in a row that App scores better than 40 pts???
Hopefully we can use this game to fine tune both sides of the ball before we head down to the 'Boro. (12 noon on Turner South).

Interesting to see. Wofford has a ball control offense that can keep the pigskin out of Edwards' hands.

ASU almost needs to play a close game. Winning every game by 30 has a way of coming back to bite you in close games late in the season. Georgia Southern found this out the hard way in '04.

2 points- Wofford has the type of offense that controls the ball, however in the last two games the opponents have controlled the time of possession.

Woffords defense is not very good.

App St. will have to hold back to make this one close. App. St. by 30+

Wofford has given us trouble in the past, but the last 2 years the games have been utter blowout wins for ASU. We have yet to play a game all season where the starters were in for all four quarters, and I agree that it would be good to have a game at least somewhat in doubt after the third, to get some experience.

All that said, Wofford is banged up, and Edwards continues to improve each week, quietling those concerned with playing a true frosh (myself included) a little more each week.

Another home game, another day of having The Rock at 120% capacity or more, and the streak will move up to 22, and once again the starters are probably cheerleaders on the sidelines midway through the third quarter.

We never blow anyone out when I am in Boone to watch a game. : smh :

I had a few lingering questions about this game... until I heard the "Nature Boy" will be in attendance. How can we lose???

Seriously, the only benefit of a close game at this point is to see if Armanti can orchestrate a drive when the game is on the line... one of the only skills that he yet to demonstrate. Unfortunately, we may have to wait another week to see him attempt it.

App by at least 3 TDs.

I made that because of what I remember from '04. Georgia Southern was #2 in the country and just steamrolling everyone. I think they hung 63 on SDSU the week before they played Furman.

Furman was the first time that team had to play all four quarters, and won the game late. I have no doubt that GSU was a more talented football team, but they ran out of gas.

I remember from my football days actually being more tired after halftime than before because your body has to reload again after taking a break. I think ASU will win easily, but there will come a time when they will have to play four quarters.

Granted, you can't keep the starters in during a blowout. Outside of the NCSU game, has ASU played their starters an entire football game yet?

nb, this is not meant to be a smack thread or anything of the like. It is only meant to be a point that could be discussed.

It scares the crap outta me. I've only been down there once before for an App game, and the final score was something nasty ('04).

This is GSU's home game against a member of the big three, a group which they themselves feel they still belong in. They'll be defending "their house" against us Mountaineers. We're going to get their absolute best shot. As all of us know, we havn't won there in ten freakin' years.

I'll be more then pleased if I make the drive back up after a one point App victory, in 23 overtimes.

How many fake punts will Ayers try?

I'm interested in that too, however, I just think the real story will be how our O-line/TE's dominate the line of scrimmage and the LB's on the edge and how our D-line blows up their O-line. I remember last year how their LB's and DB's turned and ran away from our downfield linemen on the screen passes. I don't mean "step and slip" I mean give up 5-10 yards before trying to come to the ball. That is quite a bit of yardage to give up before trying to get to the ball.

If we do that, and I think we can, all the othe stuff is the frosting on the cake and headlines in the paper.

Wofford doesn't have the skill players we got, but they fight their butts off. Not only that they are likely the smartest team in the SoCon. I remember when I was getting recruited out of high school and they told me to re-take the SAT, and I thought I had a high score before that.

The way our offense operates with calling plays at the line, there will be some miscues early on with Edwards since he is a young guy and somewhat new to the system. Some of the calls will have to change and some things are bound to foul up. Woffords defense will catch on to some of the calls and checks later in the game for sure.

The key is Satterfield keeping the Terrier defense on its heels and guessing with good play calling, and mixing it up.

No doubt Ayers is gonna pull a few tricks outta the bag this week. Expect a fake punt, a reverse or two, a QB throwback, a flea flicker or maybe a hidden football. Above all, though he is gonna establish that flex bone he runs, and beat that thing into the ground. If our DL and LB's with a little love from Lynch and Wiggins shut it down, we got the game in the bag.

October 13th, 2006, 09:02 AM
I really don't see you guys having any problem with the terriers. If anything, I think you'll struggle to keep the score down, even with second and third stringers in the game. It's not an indictment of Wofford, just a belief that skill 9 times out of 10 overcomes determination. Appy has a far superior skill level. But I would have said the same thing about us vs. CCU last week (I didn't, cause I don't like the taste of crow-you know, just in case). So I won't be totally shocked if the terriers show up inspired to play and keep it close, but even then, I just don't see how they can beat you at home.

Dungeonjoe:

What's your take on the Wofford pass defense? How does our resident Terrier expert see this game playing out?

Frankly, we are thin. We did better with Lawson from the citadel last week than I thought we would. Experieced safety Brian Ford had a concussion last week, I don't know his status yet; freshman Buck Brown came in for Ford and did very well, but the pressure will be there for certain. Tavani is there playing the other safety. Zac Grey is on the corner and Brandon Berry and a kid named Dawkins are also in the mix. Two d-line starters from last week are out with surgery.

Injuries have plagued Wofford this year. It will be interesting to see if the pass defense last week can keep up with the excellent passing game for App.

On offense, I think we have had moments of glory, but some bad play calling and injuries as well. We are passing more, which I think adds to the threat. We will have to move the ball and eat clock in order to have a chance.

If our defense embarrasses them on their trick play once or twice, you'll see that crap stop pronto.
G-W already pulled a quick kick on us successfully this year, didn't they?

A foiled reverse can really end badly if our two DE's happen to be staying home.

I am just happy it was not the blowout predicted earlier this week in this thread.

Wofford did adjust at halftime; but two touchdowns down is easier to adjust. I think against a top 10 team the first half turnovers would have been more of a problem for the Mountaineers, but as it was they have the size, strength and the skill to pull it off without much difficulty today.

Good game. Make us proud in the SoCon as the new #1.

We never blow anyone out when I am in Boone to watch a game. : smh :

See what did I tell you!

Our receivers need to practice in the cold air! The cold hard ball was bouncing off their hands like a 25 cent superball.

Me, too, and I totally agree. Looked to be in great physical condition. Very solid physically. Somebody's been doing their time in the weight room.
Wherever Wofford takes their A game, somebody's going to pay the price.
