Some nasty accusations.

FWIW, some in the comments section seem to think the program in question is JMU. Then again, the whole piece is anonymous, so who knows?

The win over a BCS team followed by a just above .500 finish would match JMU's 2010 season.

I thought it was well written also.....there are thousands of kids like him....life goes on but that coach is an ahole.....college sports is a business

some of the things he talks about kind of hits home with how a large chunk of the UNI fanbase has turned on their team this season, as well.
but the same thing happens with just about any fanbase when "their team" falls short of the fans high expectations for a particular season.
"fans" can be such a-holes at times.

As I read, I also thought this may have been at JMU based on the description of how some of the season went.

This kid has valid complaints and if the accusations are true the coach should lose his job, but the slavery/college athlete analogy is wildly inappropriate and I wish people would stop using it.

Agreed. Stupid fans suck. Stupid coaches suck. But people in slavery have no choice. Players can always walk away. There is no comparison to real slavery.

This kid is a whiny c**t. He played 1 year and things didn't go his way. The slavery comparison is too ludicrous to even respond. If you can't take criticism, football is not the game for you. I really hope the part about the racist coach is untrue though. I've been through losing seasons and never lost my love of the game or turned against the fans, even if they were harsh about our on field performance. Sometimes we deserved it.

Also, this isn't fair to assume that Mickey Mathews said those things without one shred of evidence. Things like that could ruin a mans life.

The author of that letter is a pussy.

First, be a man and put your name on it if it is true. Second, if you are telling the truth give us specific names and dates. Third, if you think scholastic sports are tough you ain't seen nothing yet... come on out in the real world of business and see how that works out for you. Third, grow the f--k up!!!

That letter is nothing more than sour grapes from somebody who didn't get what he wanted and is looking everywhere to lay blame except where he should be looking- in the mirror.

My God we are raising a generation of pussies!!!!

Disagree. Obviously he doesn't have respect for that coach. Yet the author wasn't blaming him. He just stated that sometimes individually, or collectively, players aren't always 'good enough'. Still they are always breaking their butt to be their best, play their best, and try to win.

He was expressing disappointment that this simple fact seems to elude some bad fans who feel it is their jobs to crucify players for being less than perfect.

Someone close to the JMU program in 2010 could probably figure out who it is.

He is black

He was a walk on

He only lasted one year

Likely started as a receiver and was asked to change

Had a mom who ran track in the Big Ten, maybe he is from that area of the country

Now in Europe

The racist quote from the coach also references winning a championship. This pretty much has to be JMU.

I went to the JMU/ODU game last year and sat in the Young Alumni section. In the fourth quarter, I heard a good number of fans within ear-shot of the players just go off on them. Calling them failures, a disgrace to the university, etc and then some comments toward Mickey of the same vein. Shocked me as I've never seen it to that level at App State. I've yelled out "damnit ______" and such and heard others yell at players, but most of the time everyone else around that person shouts him down.

Anonymous letters should only be done on forums. You have no idea that this guy ever played football, or is a minority, or even went to college.

Are walk-on players "cut" at many FCS schools now? Kind of surprised at that, thought programs would need the numbers, practice players etc. My brother, who admittedly was hardly any great shakes, walked-on and played at Holy Cross in the 1980's, barely got into any games and only travelled as a Senior.

I never liked Mickey Matthews. He was the DC at Marshall when we played for those National Championships. When we knocked JMU out of the playoffs in 2006 he said that the YSU QB couldn't make the trows he made a 2nd time if he was "throwing against air'. He is a bitter little man that cannot accept reality. I don't even understand how he recruits kids. I would never play for him. I think he's missing a chromosome.

However, I never heard that he was a racist. Has he been accused of racism in the past? What am I missing here? Besides the fact Mickey Matthews is a bafoon, are there allegations against that tie this together?

I am not sure what would motive a person to make up a story about this, but at the same time how could he be so naïve as to think that college football isn't a business? At the FCS level I would think that it is less of a a business for the school and more of a business for the coaches. The money is FCS programs is much less than that of the BCS conferences.

There's too little information here to make me think this is real. I think this was made up by some fan to rag on FCS football and programs. A person who really wanted to say something would've had the guts to say it publicly. I am also a fairly reserved person who doesn't try to make massive waves out on the internet especially on Facebook when everyone knows who you are.

Mickey doesn't have to be the one who said the racist quote, note the writer only references "coach" not specifically one coach or the head coach, could very well have been his positional coach or any other coach he may have interacted with (coordinator, the coach who has to monitor study hall, etc.)

Basically what we have here is two people bringing their prejudices and political bull**** to a football discussion. They're both lower than whale****. They can't just leave it alone and keep the discussion on football. Useless trolls...
