Southland Conference plays begins this week with the matchup for the Sam Houston State Bearkats, a Northwestern State squad that has defeated them three of the last four times, including a 10-6 win over the Kats in Huntsville last year.

As Kat fans will tell you, the Demons will be no walk in the park. The Kats have not won in Louisiana against the Demons since 2000 (27-13 win for SHSU) and will face a 2-2 Demon team that has won two straight (Delaware St of the MEAC and Div II Arkansas-Monticello, both at home) entering the contest. The Demons most recent win, a 20-3 victory at home against Arkansas-Monticello, was against a similar opponent as SHSU, who defeated the Boll Weevils earlier in the season, losing 41-3.

For the Kats, this is the end of a four-week,four-game road swing that has seen them go 1-2 thus far with losses to I-A schools Texas and Southern Methodist and a win against Missouri St of the Gateway Conference. The Kats, like their foe this week, 2-2 on the season, will look to split the four-game road swing and take the momentum home where they'll have a welcoming crowd for their homecoming game against the defending Southland Conference champion Colonels of Nicholls State.

The road to the Southland Conference championship begins this week for both teams. As always, the Southland Conference is an all-out war with any team being able to win any given week of the season. Surprises will occur and teams picked towards the bottom have won the SLC the last few years. What will happen for the Kats and Demons? This is a huge game for both teams looking for an identity and taking a huge step in their respective quests for an SLC title...

Look for more information and updates posted to this thread as the week continues...

NW State gearing up for Southland play
Advocate news services
Published: Oct 2, 2006

NATCHITOCHES — All preseason long and throughout last month, Northwestern State football coach Scott Stoker asked fans to reserve judgment on the young Demons until the Southland Conference season kicked off Oct. 7 at home against Sam Houston State.

Combining the conditions, he knew it would be tough to get a good read on the 2006 Demons. Nobody could be sure how a team with most of its players getting their first-ever college football experience might handle an early season slate starting with two Big 12 Conference teams, then a pair of home games against a solid intersectional Division I-AA foe and an outmanned Division II opponent.

Northwestern (2-2) has won the games fans expected and didn’t pull off upsets of Kansas or Baylor as fans hoped. But there were plenty of encouraging signs after the games at Kansas and Baylor, despite apparently lopsided margins, yet following wins over Delaware State and Arkansas-Monticello, the Demons didn’t have plenty of cause to savor their performances.

Heading into Saturday’s conference debut at home, Stoker says the Demons have a lot to prove, but that’s no different than the rest of the SLC teams — all whom have lined up against a wide range of opponents with a large dose of BCS foes heading the list.

Inconsistent offense...I'm telling you, this game is going to be all about the offensives and their ability to put points on the board against solid defenses on both sides...

Which defense is going to be broken first?

NSU still seeks complete game
October 2, 2006

Northwestern State completed its preconference schedule on Saturday with a 20-3 victory over Arkansas-Monticello at Turpin Stadium.

The Demons (2-2) still remain something of a mystery as they head into their conference opener on Saturday against Sam Houston State.

"I don't know how much I know about them to be honest with you," Demons coach Scott Stoker said. "There are areas where I think I have a pretty good idea. As an overall team, it's just hard to tell because of the schedule."

The Demons were overmatched in losses to Big 12 opponents Kansas and Baylor. The Demons then overmatched Division I-AA Delaware State and Division II Arkansas-Monticello in victories.

There are concerns about an inconsistent offense.

Stoker tells his boys to 'wake up'...
================
Demons need to wake up

In a break from his routine of his first four years, Northwestern State coach Scott Stoker is gathering his team for a quick talk after games this season.

After their lackluster performance in a 20-3 win over Arkansas-Monticello Saturday, the postgame ritual was one the Demons would probably just as soon have avoided.
"You better wake up," Stoker admonished his team. "You need to do some soul searching." Indeed, the time when NSU can get a pass for winning and playing poorly has passed.

The Demons start Southland Conference play against Sam Houston Saturday.

I was one who thought this Northwestern team had rebuilding written all over it. It still might be a year away, but in a conference that's as balanced and lacking in strong teams as it's ever been, you may only have to be average to compete.

"It doesn't get any bigger than this," Stoker said of this week. "This is what you play all September for. Hopefully, we got all the bad ones out of the way." And NSU has had plenty of those. A 2-2 record after opening with Division I-A Kansas and Baylor, mid-level I-AA Delaware State and Division II Arkansas-Monticello is all that could be expected.

Right in the mix of things
Cody Stark

For the first time since the 2004 Southland Conference championship season, Sam Houston State is in perfect position heading into league play.

The Bearkats are 2-2, which is only one win better than they were at this point a year ago. You might be saying to yourself one game shouldn’t be that much of a difference, but it is.

Last season, SHSU rolled over an NAIA school to open with a win at home, then lost to a pair of pretty good Division I-A programs, Houston and Texas Tech, on the road. That series of games didn’t give then first-year head coach Todd Whitten and his staff an idea of what it was like coaching in Division I-AA.

The one chance they had came the week before SLC play began when Missouri State was supposed to come to town. But like a lot of things, Hurricane Rita didn’t allow that to happen.

Article on the Purple Swarm defense and how NW State is going to tackle the Kats offense this coming weekend. Stoker is very complimentary of DD Terry

From NSUDemons.com...

Purple Swarm defense regaining form as SLC season opens at home Saturday night
10/5/2006

FOOTBALL: Demons have allowed just 6 points in last two games, 1st time since 1977 to hold two straight foes to a combined 6 points or less

NATCHITOCHES -- After allowing only two field goals and an average of just 172.5 yards per game in the last two outings, Northwestern State’s Purple Swarm defense is drawing comparisons to the tenacity it displayed in 2002-04, when NSU ranked among the nation’s leaders each season.

The Purple Swarm defense and the entire NSU team face a big test at home Saturday night when Sam Houston State visits Turpin Stadium in the Southland Conference opener for both teams. Kickoff is 7 o’clock in a regionally-televised (FSN Southwest) matchup between schools that shared the 2004 SLC title.

The Bearkats (2-2) use a spread offense that will rely on talented running back D.D. Terry and a rapid-fire passing game, said Demons coach Scott Stoker on Wednesday. Terry ran for 85 yards last week at Texas, piling up more yards rushing by himself against the Longhorns than did the entire offensive units from Ohio State, Iowa State, Rice or North Texas.

“They’re extremely challenging to defend,” said Stoker. “Terry is a heck of a back and they do a great job with a different scheme that you don’t often see. They won’t take a snap behind center in any circumstance and it presents some different problems for the defense.

Matt D picks the game and tells us why...

Sam Houston State (2-2, 0-0) at Northwestern State (2-2, 0-0), 8:00

The struggles of the Southland Conference are well-chronicled, but these two teams have at least met expectations considering their schedules through the first month. Both teams own two losses to I-A opponents, and they are the only Southland teams to knock off a full-scholarship I-AA opponent. Northwestern State, as usual, is having success with its defense. The Demons held Kansas to 326 yards of total offense in a 49-18 loss in the opener, and they gave up only three points in consecutive wins against Delaware State and Arkansas-Monticello coming into this matchup. They are in the top 10 nationally against the run. The offensive stats aren’t that bad either, though the Demons are averaging just 17.8 ppg despite good yardage numbers. Running back Bryon Lawrence has notched consecutive 100-yard efforts, and will likely be relied on to carry a lot of the load here. But that won’t be all that easy against an improved Sam Houston State defense. Losses to SMU and Texas hurt the numbers, but the Bearkats played well against Missouri State, especially against the run. They will have a good chance here if they shut down the Demon running attack and get a quality effort from Brett Hicks. By the end of the season, this game could mean a lot, as these teams are looking as good as anyone in the league. Sam Houston State can win it with a good effort from Hicks, but that will be difficult against the Demons. Northwestern State is usually very tough at home, and the home advantage is often a big factor in the Southland. The Demons will use that edge and a solid defense and running game to win a close, low-scoring game. Prediction: Northwestern State 14, Sam Houston State 13

Special teams a key to success

Kats need to cut down mistakes against Demons
Cody Stark
Assistant Sports Editor

If Sam Houston State hopes to start Southland Conference play with a win this weekend at Northwestern State, everything is going to have to be clicking on special teams.

The Bearkats have struggled at times this season in that department with two blocked punts (one for a score), a punt return for a touchdown and only 1-of-5 successful field goal attempts.

Last season, Northwestern State came away with a 10-6 victory at Bowers Stadium, and with the Demons boasting one of the toughest defenses in the league in 2006, the Bearkats can’t afford to leave any points on the field or give up any unnecessary scores.

“(Special teams) has kind of been up and down for us,” SHSU head coach Todd Whitten said Thursday. “I think last week some of the mistakes were because of Texas’ good play. But we have been working hard on special teams, and everybody is getting better.”

Pate is available...

BOMAR WATCH
Sam Houston is still awaiting word from the NCAA on the status of transfer quarterback Rhett Bomar. Bomar transferred from Oklahoma after he was involved in a scandal over summer jobs at a local car dealership, but has not been cleared to play.

"We're still just waiting," said SHSU coach Todd Whitten. "We have not got the word that he can play."

The Bearkats should get Wade Pate back at quarterback. Pate started the season opener against Arkansas-Monticello but has not played since with a shoulder injury.

Whitten said Brett Hicks (52-for-86, 422 yards, two interceptions) will start again Saturday, but that Pate could be available.

Today's game day story from the Huntsville Item...

Same team, new attitude

Bearkats more confident heading into conference opener against Demons
Cody Stark
Assistant Sports Editor

At this point a year ago, Sam Houston State entered Southland Conference play with a little uneasiness.

The players were still trying to get used to a new coaching staff and the intensity just wasn’t there. The Bearkats came out looking as if they were just going through the motions in a 10-6 loss to Northwestern State at Bowers Stadium.

SHSU never really recovered from that disappointing loss, and the defending SLC champs went on to finish fifth in the league.

That was then, and this is now. The Bearkats are 2-2 with their only two losses coming against SMU and Texas, two pretty good Division I-A programs with a combined record of 7-3.

The players are walking taller now, and the coaches are more comfortable with their play calling and personnel decisions.

Game day read from the Shreveport Times...

Similar Demons, Bearkats to open Southland play
October 6, 2006
By Brian Vernellis
[email protected]

Northwestern State and Sam Houston State share a lot of similarities heading into tonight's Southland Conference opener at Turpin Stadium.

The Demons and Bearkats are 2-2, played a pair of Division I-A opponents and have wins over Division II Arkansas-Monticello.

Sam Houston State has a slight disadvantage however. Tonight's game marks their fourth straight road game.

"I always think the league opener is a huge game," Sam Houston State head coach Todd Whitten said. "We've been working hard trying to be tougher as a team and not let distractions bother us.

"We've tried to turn all these road trips and Division I things into a positive. If we can go and get some things done on the road against SMU, Missouri State and Texas, then traveling around the league will be a little easier. I've really challenged our guys."

Fox Sports Southwest will televise the game. Kickoff is slated for 7:07 p.m.

Northwestern State head coach Scott Stoker has challenged his team as well. He's challenged them to start scoring some touchdowns.

Gameday write-up from Alexandria...

Demons desperate to find end zone
By Jeff Matthews
[email protected]
(318) 487-6353

NATCHITOCHES -- Northwestern State has a point to make when it opens Southland Conference play against Sam Houston at 7 p.m. tonight.

Or, rather, points.

If the Demons (2-2) want to get past the Bearkats (2-2) at home tonight and go on to compete for the conference title, they will likely have to improve on a red zone offense that's had coach Scott Stoker seeing red.
In 22 trips inside the opponent's 20-yard line, Northwestern has scored just six touchdowns.

"It's very frustrating," Stoker said. "When you get those opportunities, you've got to take advantage of it."

In an ugly, 20-3 win over Division II Arkansas-Monticello last week, NSU had just two touchdowns and two field goals in nine red zone trips. The Demons also had one turnover, three missed field goals and ended the game unable to punch it in from the one-yard line.
