Eastern Washington University head coach Beau Baldwin doesn’t hide the fact there is a revenge factor at play this week, but he’s simply calling it human nature.

Baldwin’s second-ranked Eagles take on fourth-ranked Sam Houston State, the same team that ended their season a year ago at Roos Field in the semifinals of the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision Playoffs. Kickoff Saturday (Sept. 28) at Bowers Stadium in Huntsville, Texas, is 12:07 p.m. Pacific time in a game televised live on Comcast SportsNet Northwest.

The Eastern-Sam Houston State game is a rematch of last year’s 45-42 loss in the semifinals of the FCS Playoffs on Dec. 15, 2012, at Roos Field in Cheney, Wash. In that game, Eastern scored 42 second-half points to rally from a 35-0 deficit and nearly pull off the improbable comeback.

“There is a pride factor – no question,” said Baldwin. “There is a different feel to this game for us because of the tough loss we had to them in the semifinals. To Sam Houston State’s credit, they did a great job against us, they had a great team and they do again this year. We love getting another shot at them – it’s not a revenge factor but it is human nature for players to want to keep fighting back. And our players are no different.”

How many guys did the BearKats lose on D from last year? I know they lost the twin brothers that played LB and Safety, but was wondering if you guys lost a lot more on D or not. I know most of your Offense is back, at least the big names.....Bell, Flanders, Sincere etc.

Kats return 5 starters from last year's defense plus adding TCU transfer Tanner Brock.

Key for our D will be to contain Adams. He won't have those 6'5" WR's like he did last year. Those will win you match ups against ANY team.

EWU hasn't shown they can stop the run which isn't a good recipe against the #1 rushing & scoring offense in FCS.

Longest current home winning streak on the line (17). EWU is a much improved team & should be a GREAT game.

I tend to agree with Bisonator's thought. It will be interesting to see how it plays out. The Kats secondary has been a question mark, but I don't think we did much scheme wise against Texas Southern or IWU other than put guys out there and let them play. My guess would be that you will see a different look from the defense than they have had, possibly the same scheme they used at Texas A&M. Adams is a really good QB, but he's not Johnny Manziel. As for the SHSU offense, I am not convinced that EWU has made that much of a difference in their defense for me to think they will shut the Kats down. A big key for our offense is the addition of Torrance Williams who missed most of last year with a nagging injury. He is small, but is tough as nails and likely faster than anybody on either team. EWU might have a burner or two in their secondary though, I haven't studied that much about them. He gives us a deep threat that we didn't have last year and with the tight ends getting more involved in the offense it isn't as simple as stacking the box and stopping Flanders.

I'm betting that there will be more points than last years game in Cheney.

SHSU had a very good defense 2 yrs ago and a good one last year. Playing at home is a big advantage this time of year. Plus EWU's run defense is not that good with that being the Kats strength.

Why is SHSU ranked behind EWU again?

Who knows. People have their reasons. IMO it's always tough to tell this early into the season where teams really are. I wouldn't be offended at all if it was switched. But this game should say a lot about both teams by the time it is over.

SHSU will be playing for their home crowd with an opportunity to claim more bragging rights. EWU will be coming for revenge (regardless of what coach Baldwin says). Adams had a lot of success against SHSU in the 2nd half, and with a full game ahead of him, it could be interesting. But SHSU will have schemed him, no doubt, and if they can play man on the receivers as effectively as Toledo did, it could be a tough day for the Eagles. But I'm guessing SHSU will not be at that level, and our receivers may not be last years, but they are very good, and can still do a lot of damage.

I think this will be a lot different than last years game, and will be more of a seesaw battle. I don't know who will win, honestly. Advantage probably goes to SHSU being at home, but I think the Eagles and Adams pull it off in a nail-biter!

And this may be the best week in FCS football! Three games pitting top 10 teams against one another:

#2 EWU vs #4 SHSU
#1 NDSU vs #6 SDSU
#5 N Iowa vs #9 McNeese

And of course, there are other intriguing match-ups with ranked teams and teams on the bubble. It would be nice to have about 10 TV's. Should make for some very exciting action. Of course, EWU vs SHSU is number one, but I'd love to see the NDSU vs SDSU game as well.

There's also a clustering of teams (like SHSU and EWU) at the top and a LOT of scrambling and guesswork from 7 on down to the thirties, honestly. I have EWU ranked above SHSU based mostly on their road PAC 10 win, but the result of this game will have me re-evaluating - although, absent a blowout, I imagine both will stay in my top ten (same with NDSU and SDSU after their game). Such a great week!

How about you kick rocks. This is a thread about EWU vs SHSU something that the bandwagon/football newbie NDSU have nothing to do with. Id say SHSU and EWUs ranking in relation to one another has a lot more to do with it than a meaningless computer ranking of one of NDSUs opponents.

It'll be interesting to see what Fritz has planned against Adams. Can the Kats play straight up man to man? Will they blitz much? Got to play assignment football and don't lose contain against him. On EWU's side I think they are gonna have to be able to run the ball better and stop Flanders. Get some hits on Bell early and often. I just don't see their defense stopping anyone yet though.

My guess is 42-31 Kats. They jump out early again and play better in the second half then they did last game.

Sam_Kats
September 25th, 2013, 09:17 AM
The scheme is what the scheme is...I'm guessing they dial up the pressure vs Adams & force some early throws. If he makes the throws, so be it. Negative plays (INC passes) force 3rd & longs & I think that's how you beat a good QB. I'd love to see Tanner Brock spy Adams all night, that way the DE's can go ahead & pin their ears back. Of course, changing it up is ALWAYS the key.

I'd love to see Sam slow down the offense just a bit & grind them with Flanders/Sincere/Hill. It limits EWU's possessions & they haven't shown to stop the run.

Sammy94
September 25th, 2013, 09:31 AM
I think Sam did a great job with containment against Johnny Football, we didn't let his legs beat us. I think the WR corps of A&M well the 6'5 Evans gave our secondary fits but he made Alabama's look bad also. I see us running the same scheme against EWU (3-3-5) with Fielo or Brock spying on Adams as they did with Manziel. I also see our offense slow it down as long as we are ahead.

I think the most interest thing is the game is how quickly the momentum can change. Both teams have to keep their foot on the gas pedal you can go from 14 up to 7 down very quickly. Neither of these teams will be out of it until the final whistle. So many weapons. Fun to watch.

38-28 SHSU, home field, and playing a game against Johnny Football carry them through this game.

Probably. With our **** Sandwich OOC schedule we haven't had any starters play an entire game yet.

I actually would like to see VA pull it down and run it more than he did against Toledo. He had several plays where he pulled up short and threw incompletions when he had acres in front of him.

And yes, if I were Sam, I'd definitely blitz. If I'm Baldwin, I'm expecting this and need to get the draw and screen game going.

But obviously, the most interesting battle will be EWU's front 7 against the run. We gave up a ton of yards against Toledo on the ground, but actually played really well through the middle of that game when our offense stalled. Toledo had 36 minutes T.O.P., dominating us in the 2nd and 3rd quarters and yet it was still just a 2 point game in the 4th quarter.

Sam is really good, and really fast, but I don't think as good as OSU and Toledo. This game might actually slow down for us a bit.

I don't buy that as an excuse. If you have a good strength and conditioning program your team shouldn't be gassed dependent upon how long they play in your OOC games. Unless you are stating you haven't seen your starters play an entire game yet, then that makes sense.

Interesting question. I honestly don't know the answer, either. With the game against A&M, we fell off the cliff pretty quickly in the second half, but what FCS team would fare much better against the Aggies? Against HBU we never struggled at any point in the game, and against Incarnate Word and Texas Southern, we actually started slow and finished strong.

Like it's been said around here, this is the first true test of how playoff-ready the Bearkats are. Unlike last season, however, the Southland seems to be a bit stronger which means we'll have more benchmarks along the way.

Quite frankly nobody really gives a **** about rankings. We were ranked lower than MSU/UM past 3 years. Doesn't matter as long as we get a chance to finish the job in Frisco.

Our defense played the entire game against A&M and they ran around 90 plays. Tanner Brock, Eric Fielo and Beuchamp only missed 5-10 snaps total. They were all 3 on the field together nearly every snap the entire game including kickoff, punt, and punt return. Conditioning will not be an issue.

Yeah, the opportunity to rest starters has been there even less for us. That being said we typically platoon around 10 players on D.L. anyway which is why we tend to get stronger on D as each game goes on.

We started the season a little thin at LB but a couple of RS freshman have seen serious playing time so I think we're getting better there too.

So most of that average was against a team that would put 300 plus on the vast majority of FCS teams. I'm not saying that EWU has the stuanchest run D in the FCS, but to say their run D sucks based on that criteria is a bit laughable. Especially when the Griz haven't been tested like that, yet are still giving up over 100 ypg. The Griz D may be better. But not that much better. I can only hope that the SHSU team takes the Eagle D as lightly.

In regards to offense, the Eagles lost some outstanding receivers, but have some solid guys that have stepped up. They are not at the same level as last year, but our running game is improved, and the additional balance negates any decrease in that area. I think SHSU is an outstanding team again this year. People talked last year about how they walked all over weak competition, so they wouldn't be able to withstand the tests of tougher teams. Obviously, they proved those naysayers wrong. Nothing but respect for the Kats. I think EWU can win if they play a great game, but it will take a solid and balanced effort, and better run defense than against Toledo.

So basically a pick em with the 3 pt home field swing.

Seems about right...so many big plays to be made, who knows how this one will go. I know this - due to our crappy scheduling, Kat fans have had this one circled on the calendar. 3 games where we were 40 pt favorites & a 40 pt underdog game vs the best offense in the FBS...not exactly kosher. But I have to think that eventually, the Kat's offense is going to be figured out. When the Griz last played them, they started coming back in the second half but ran out of time. Same for the Eags last year. Flanders et.al. are very dynamic and their scheme fits them to a t, but you have to figure someone, somewhere is going to figure out how to bottle him up. Otherwise, everyone is going to switch their offense to what SHSU does.

What does that matter? Funny how the Griz prop themselves up for their attendance, when there is absolutely NO competition for the fans. There is nothing else in Missoula, besides enjoying the outdoors, and supporting the Griz. That's great. But who knows what it would be like if there was an FBS school an hour away from you guys. We are in completely different situations.

That being said, EWU's fan-base has been improving, and packing our small stands. With the expansion, we still won't be where the Griz are in stadium size, and therefore, not attendance. But the Eagles fans are doing a great job supporting their team.

You have great attendance compared to all the FCS. Awesome! Good for you guys. But I fail to see why the attendance is constantly brought up in so many of these threads. It doesn't add to the score. The team is doing just fine regardless of attendance.

We whore ourselves out for big paychecks because we can't fill the stands for any game other than Montana.

Look at it however you want to. EWU certainly needs to money. But in addition, that seemed to work out pretty well for a couple of the schools that did it this year. How much national exposure did the Griz get for their win against *FBS App State?

I think a lot of it has to do with VA knowing when to let his feet fly. He had several good throws that were dropped in high pressure 3rd down situations 2 weeks ago, that didn't happen against Oregon and I would hope that has been worked on 1000 more times in the past 2 weeks.

He would have thrown more pics, less touchdowns and gotten benched for Padron before the Kats fell asleep and decided to play a defensive scheme they've never played before. If Adams was the clear starter going into that game, they would have also been prepared for a scrambling QB like they have been this year.

In retrospect, I'm glad the Katz gave you an opportunity last year, that you eventually squandered with an interception and **** defense, you think EWU actually has a chance this year. Cute.

That is a good point. Having two QB's last year was an advantage at times. And not being able to game plan VA as well certainly played a part in his success last year. I really wondered how VA would perform this year, not having that. I'd say he is doing just fine.

FYI whatever eagle fan said y'all played in this type of weather a couple weeks ago.....well I will tell you that y'all most definitely haven't!! Weather is holding out for the Kats and most forecast are saying 89-91 degrees with the humidity between 70-75%. For the record that makes the "feels like temp" 100-105 depending on exact humidity!! There's hot and then there is southeast Texas hot!!! Just please don't puke on our field like the #1 ranked Grizz did!!!

You had that bet in your lap for 4-5 days with no response. In the eyes of a betting man, that's no bet.

You disappeared from the board a lot longer than 4-5 days after the bet was made, and the game was played.

Is that what "a betting man" in Texas does to craw fish out of a bet?

Meaning the bet was in YOUR lap for 4-5 days with no response. I left for the Natty a couple days before the gamee & didn't post after for a while (the sting of losing back-to-back title games will do that) and come back to you "accepting" the bet.

You're right, that's gonna suck. I see they are also predicting thunder storms at the time of the game. Could make for a very interesting game. Humidity and rain...I'd say the weather favors the Bearkats. Hopefully, it won't be too big of a factor, and we can see a game where two teams play and the winner wins based entirely on their merits.

Really? So when it's high 80's low 90's with high humidity in the Willamette Valley, it's somehow different than the identical conditions in Huntsville?

70% humidity in higher elevation does not compare to 70% at sea level in the piney woods. Cheney is at 2,352, Huntsville is 371 ft. The weather may not be a factor today in Huntsvegas but I'm betting when the 4th quarter rolls around, the team in Red is going to be feeling worse than the one in Orange with the boxers on the outside (well, unless they already have a 5 TD lead and in that case, maybe not).

If you care to follow the discussion, Corvallis, OR is also close to sea level. I don't know whether higher elevation humidity is easier to deal with, but higher elevation itself is a conditioning factor. BTW, Roos field is around 2700 feet.

Not saying the heat and humidity can't be a factor, but it might not be as big a deal as some are letting on.

Interesting. I remember the last time the Griz played in Huntsville (2004 IIRC), and the heat was definitely a factor. Wasn't pretty.

Also, to think that the team that routinely plays in hot, humid conditions doesn't have an advantage playing in those conditions over one from the Pacific Northwest is just silly. You obviously don't know much about heat and acclimatization.

Nick Saban quoted that the heat in Alabama did not compare to the heat in College station! We practice in it daily and are better prepared. It's been in the 60's in Cheney the past couple weeks. It's been in the 90's since may here with 2 total days lower than 90! I've been outside all day today even for me it's Effin hot today!!! Really Muggy. It's already 85 degrees and 70% humidity at 11:30 am. High will be 90-92 around 3-4pm. A quick shower would be really miserable which it appears a very small cell is headed that way.

Texas humidity is different but its not a game changer. I hang out there a lot. It sucks ass, but I have no problem playing basketball or football outside all day or doing anything else as long as you stay hydrated. Its nothing to drink 10-12 32oz bottles of Poweraid in a day if you spend time outside. Its very overrated and the only time I can ever remember it POSSIBLY being a factor was waterskiing on Lake Travis for 9 hours....toward the end I got a little tired.
